The 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake brought about great numbers of landslides in the broad area of the eastern Iburi region, Hokkaido, especially Atsuma town. As emergency disaster response to the earthquake, PASCO Corporation carried out 1) taking oblique aerial photographs, 2) automatic extraction of landslides using optical satellite imagery (SPOT6), 3) detection of surface deformation with DInSAR analysis and 4) field surveys based on DInSAR analysis. This paper introduces the analysis of extraction utilizing optical satellite images with deep learning, which has been actively studied in recent years.

A fire destroyed the Shuri Castle, an icon of Okinawan culture in Japan on October 31, 2019. I launched a project with a group of people who gathered on social media aiming to collect photographs and videos of the castle along with the memories from the public, and to digitally reconstruct 3D models of the castle so that they can be used as alternative touristic resources. The data has been collected through a website, and more than 80,000 images from 35 countries and regions have been received from about 3,000 unique contributors, half of whom sent their memories.

The empirical model for estimating stand volume from LiDAR was developed by Takejima (2015). The study introduced new concept of Stock Ratio, the ratio of the stand volume in the spatial volume occupied by trees. The analysis of field data of over 6,000 trees revealed that Stock Ratio can be descripted by species and Hart-Becking index (Sr). However, the model had a problem for practical use, because of its adaptability since the base parameter was relying on the particular field data. To solve this problem, Stock Ratio simulation was adopted in this study. It was realized by calculating stem volume and spatial volume from virtual tree model. As a result, the generalized stand volume estimation functions were established. Functions are v={0.0270e(-0.2140×Sr)+0.00217}V (Sugi : Cryptomeria Japonica stand) and v={0.0226e(-0.2485×Sr)+0.00207}V (Hinoki : Chamaecyparis Obutsusa stand) where v as stand volumes, V as spatial volume calculated from LiDAR data. With the use of these functions, the stand volume of Sugi and Hinoki can be appropriately estimated without field data, which was essential in conventional methods.

At COP21 held in Paris in 2015, the Paris Agreement was adopted, in which REDD-plus was confirmed as one of the most important climate change mitigation measures. In this paper, I explain the status of forest in developing countries, which implement REDD-plus activities, and the use of remote sensing in the REDD-plus scheme. Next, I consider issues of the use of remote sensing for REDD-plus implementation. Finally, I describe prospects of the monitoring to archive REDD-plus using remote sensing.

The present paper proposes an algorithm to automatically extract the edges of buildings from terrestrial LiDAR data for the sake of three-dimensional modeling. Because three-dimensional LiDAR data are difficult to process for the extraction, first, two-dimensional data (<i>r<sub>xy,z</sub></i>) is obtained from the original threedimensional data. Next, two gravity points were calculated using several points in the neighbor of the target point in order to reduce the effects of the noise contaminated in the data. Finally, the interior angle of the target point with two gravity points was defined as an indicator for the edges. The results show that the algorithm can function robustly to extract the edges. While the proposed algorithm is based on the two-dimensional processing, it can be applied for the three-dimensional coordinate by merging different scan line results. It is concluded that the proposed algorithm is potential to apply for the three-dimensional modeling of buildings.

GPM (global precipitation measurement) core observatory was launched by H-IIA・F23 rocket on 28 February, 2014 successfully. The first light images by mission instruments ; DPR (dual-frequency precipitation radar) and GMI (GPM microwave imager) were released on 25 March, 2014 by JAXA/NASA, which are verifying qualitative precipitation intensity in vertical and horizontal distribution. This review is describing overview of GPM core observatory with DPR, GMI, status of GPM constellation satellites, and GSMaP (global satellite mapping of precipitation).

1978年5月18日, 妙高火山白田切川に発生した土石流は新赤倉温泉を中心に多くの被害をもたらした。筆者は災害前後の空中写真による判読と計測, および現地調査を行って, 土石流の氾濫と地形との関係を検討し, 次のような知見を得た。<BR>(1) 土石流が氾濫したのは河床の浅い所である。<BR>(2) 土石流が氾濫したのは河道の攻撃斜面側である。<BR>(3) 河道に沿う自然堤防状の微高地か土石流の氾濫域を規制している。<BR>以上の知見は火山地域における土石流災害予測を考える場合に重要であると考えられる。

Plant height, one of the fundamental crop growth parameters, is usually collected by a direct measurement. The authors have developed a method for the estimation of rice plant height by using a short-range LiDAR measurement from above a paddy rice canopy. In this method, the estimated rice plant height is calculated based on the analysis of the vertical distribution of 3D point cloud data, therefore the estimation is affected by foliage abundance and laser incident angle conditions. Plants with similar height but different foliage abundance were observed using a short-range LiDAR from above a paddy rice canopy to examine the influence of the incident angles on rice plant height estimation. The results of the examination showed that the influence of the incident angle condition was similar in different foliage abundance until the maximum tiller number stage. In addition, the estimation of rice plant height was not affected by foliage abundance in a laser incident angle less than 8 degrees which is almost a vertical incident condition.

SLATS is the first test satellite of JAXA to demonstrate operations at “super low orbit”below 400 km altitude, almost never used for long-life remote sensing. Lower altitudes will bring benefits for Earth observation such as higher resolution optical imaging and higher Signal/Noise ratio of Synthetic Aperture Radar. Small and High Resolution Optical Sensor (SHIROP) is a panchromatic camera to achieve under 1 meter resolution from super low altitudes. Pointing accuracy and image quality, which are influenced by atmospheric drag, ion engine and Time Delay Integration (TDI), are going to be evaluated. Techniques acquired by SLATS are planned to be used for future regional observation.
