A network of the emergency telemedicine for mountain climbers in Japan Alps area has been developed. The network consists of 2.4GHz wireless LAN with over 30 km distance to be connected the Cable TV LAN. We confirmed that this network is able to transfer the high quality video and audio signal suitable for the telemedicine between the mountain huts and hospitals. In this paper, we pointed out the shortcomings of wireless LAN system and cable TV network system in use, for the telemedicine, and wireless LAN module covered more than 30km and a extension system of upstream frequency bandwidth for Cable TV network. Experiments suggested that a low cost and long distance wireless LAN is useful for mountain climber's emergency telemedicine.

Medical physics education for radiological technology students, medical students and dental students were discussed with the bases of reports by 6 speakers at the symposium entitled “Medical Physics EducationPresent State and for Future Development”, held on 29th of June,1990, as a part of “The 7th Meeting of Japanese Association of Medical Physics”.Physics has been less welcomed by high school students. This fact and inn ovations introduced to medicine demand our efforts to prepare more attractive teaching material of medical physics for medical students.The guidelines of national examinations for the license of dental practice, and also for radiological technologists, specified in detail, tend to make radiological physics teaching stiff and fo rmal. Considerations of not making the lecture be just for the national examinations are important.The Department of Medical Physics has not been juxtaposed in any Japanese university hospitals. Medical Physicist is not an identified profession in Japan. Few post graduate educational programs of Medical Physics have been developed in Japan. These situations must be improved.

It is very important which the special xray equipment and photosensitive materials merely are prepared but also their maximum ability are shown for mammography which is taken photography of breast tissue having a few absorbed difference and requires showing the detail of change to a morbid state.Especia lly, the physical properties of film are influenced on developing conditions, namely, developing temperature, developing time and developer. In this study, the physical properties were investigated by using some developing conditions.In the results, it has been confirmed, which the temperature dependencies on physical properties of films for mammography are different with developing time and developer.Furthermore, it has been confirmed, which it is very important wh en the maximum ability of the films for mammography is required, the suitable developing temperature must be investigated by using the automatic processor of each institution, that is, by using the developing time and developer of each institution.

The image quality of mammogram has improved over the past 2 decades as a result of the development of specially designed mammography unit. For mammography to achieve high sensitivity and specificity, all aspects of the imaging process must be optimized. This paper describes the recent development in breast imaging technologies, including design of the x-ray equipment (traget and filtration materials), detector (screen-film system), and processing used for mammography. The methods for acceptance testing and quality control on mammography have been also reported.

Proton Medical Research Center of Tsukuba University employs a scattering method to obtain approoriate prooriate (almost flat dose distribution of 16cm in diameter on the treatment table) irradiation field for the proton beam therapy. A simple estimation shows that only 10% of protons impinging into the scatterer can reach the irradiation field. Collimators as well as other devices placed along course of the beam port interrupt the rest of protons. As is well known, energetic protons generate neutrons when they interact with matters. Some portions of these strongly penetrating neutrons cause an unexpected whole body irradiation of patients during the proton therapy. In this report, the neutron dose per unit proton target dose is estimated about 0.006 Sv/Gy for a typical treatment planning (the specific fluence and average energy of protons at the surface of the patient are about 1.1 x 109cm-2/Gy and 135 MeV respectively), and a strategy for reducing them is proposed.

In the first few years following the medical use of x rays together with radium, there was almost a complete lack of radiation protection, due to an ignorance of the hazards involved. The history of their development are reviewed.In this paper, we describe the sealed-source lead safe for storage, drawer assembly, lead bed shielding for the protection of radium sources, telecurie unit and occupational exposure of physicians and nurses in radium-loading procedures, especially of radium nurses exposed to fingers, back, stomach, breasts and eyes of radium nurses of the Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo.

Heavy ion therapy using the energetic <SUP>12</SUP>C beam is successfully under way at HIMAC, Japan. The method is more advantageous than traditional radiation therapy in dose concentration owing to the Bragg peak and high relative biological effectiveness. A research study using the <SUP>11</SUP>C beam for heavy ion therapy in the future has been carried out in order to develop the capability of monitoring the dose distribution. Our group has examined the total energy absorption spectrum of the <SUP>11</SUP>C beam in a plastic scintillator. We could clearly observe the total absorption peak of <SUP>11</SUP>C in the energy spectrum and, in addition, we found a broad bump structure was associated with the peak. The bump area occupies 37% of the total spectrum and it probably affects the dose calculation for an accurate treatment planning. We elucidated the mechanism that leads to the structure of the total energy absorption spectra given by <SUP>11</SUP>C and <SUP>12</SUP>C in a block of plastic scintillator. This paper describes the method in detail and gives experimental analysis results which deal with the bump structure. We could explain the bump structure using the energy spectra caused by the fragmentation reactions.
