This paper discusses the role played by enjoyment in class of "Nihon jijyo" ("Studies of Japanese culture and society" for international students) at a university. First, the significance of incorporating experiential learning and audio-visual aids into the class to facilitate active learning is discussed. Next, active learning activities — namely, watching "Dahtsu no Tabi" ( a Japanese TV show: "Journey by darts"), and going to a Japanese festival — were conducted, and ways to enhance students' enjoyment through the activities were suggested. Finally, the role of enjoyment in enhancing students' learning motivation are discussed. The results shows that students' enjoyment was enhanced, and they have become more active learners after participating in the activities. And then, after experiential learning, they have wished to get many new experiences.

This paper analyzes the reactions emerging in Japan to The Cove; a movie that condemns the dolphin-hunting that is being conducted in a cove in Wakayama, Japan. In addition, it examines Japanese "national culture" and some of the present-day problems caused by the globalization of animal protection activities. My main focus is on the following three points. Firstly, I examine the reasons why the movie has evoked so much nationalism amongst Japanese viewers. Secondly, I argue how the movie itself is a blatant example of what Said calls "Orientalism" and finally I analyze some problems that could emerge if Japan defends the eating of dolphins and whales as inherently part of our "national culture." By treating the above issues, this paper posits that the movie, and those who produced it, are seriously flawed by what is called "Orientalism", because not only have they portrayed the fishermen at the cove as being ruthlessly cruel to animals, but they have portrayed the people of Japan as being in need of salvation.Concurrently, this paper stresses the following two points. Firstly, Japan's defense of the eating of dolphins and whales on the grounds of it being indispensable to national culture is problematic, because it is a shallow excuse that prevents us from presenting different opinions in Japan toward dolphin and whale hunting. Secondly, by using "national culture" as a defense against Western criticism of whale and dolphin consumption, Japan risks falling into the trap of becoming just as ethnocentrism as the Western nations.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has quietly been a part of our daily lives for a long time. Advancements in this technology, however, are set to unleash its true potential and bring its benefits to many more components of the industrial field. By utilizing RFID technology, we can achieve minimized cost in various application programs/systems. The technology allows for higher automation, reducing the need for manual intervention. This can increase the speed at which a product flows through the new application fields, thereby lowering the need for safety stock. In this paper, we introduce a new application system by RFID which is used in medical education, especially acupuncture study in oriental and Western medicines.

This paper explores a best-seller book entitled Kojima no Haru or Spring in the Island published in 1938. The book, written by Ogawa Masako, a medical doctor who was working for a leprosarium named Nagashima Aiseien in Okayama prefecture, is a report of her trip to Kochi, Tokushima, and Okayama to give lectures on leprosy to a public audience and to persuade patients living in their homes to enter leprosarium. Sentimentalism amplified with Tanka scattered throughout in the book, Kojima no Haru made the readers to consider leprosy patients as miserable and pitiful people. This stereotypical image of patients spurred a paternalistic approach toward the patients thereafter.

Ancient evidences of piracy in the first half of the first century B.C., in general, report the mutual assistance between Mithridates, king of Pontos, the most implacable enemy of Romans and the Cilician pirates. In some phases of conflicts and wars between the king and Romans, this paper finds out two different though interrelated dimensions around piracy as a political issue in this period:・ A Roman imperialistic tactics which exploits the label of the co-operator to the pirates against Mithridates.・ A measure for the Roman elites to gain a political superiority through imperium and the success in the war against Mithridates and pirates. This character of piracy is essentially similar to the situation in the second century B.C. However, the third dimension also appears apparent in the first half of the first century:・ Actions such as pillage, slaughter or kidnapping by pirates supported by Mithridates gave Roman society a severe damage which requested the Senate to take a thorough measure to suppress the pirates. This situation let the Senate permit some Roman commanders imperium extra ordinem――a temporally and spatially huge military power.

Although there are no testimonies which present piracy as crucial menace for Romans, they had increasingly carried out the military actions against pirates by the end of the 2nd. Century B.C. That appears to be explained by two factors:1. An imperialistic tactics: Rome would have presented themselves as a protector of the mediterranean world by the suppression of pirates.2 A measure in the Roman political life: The military success gave Roman elites some political advantages. It would seem that piracy was a political issue for Romans in these two meanings. However, evidences of Roman attack against Cilician pirates in 102-100 B.C. show us that the pirates would have brought Romans into certain critical conditions. The judgment on this supposition requires us an inquiry into the situation in the following century.
