This paper discusses the role played by enjoyment in class of "Nihon jijyo" ("Studies of Japanese culture and society" for international students) at a university. First, the significance of incorporating experiential learning and audio-visual aids into the class to facilitate active learning is discussed. Next, active learning activities — namely, watching "Dahtsu no Tabi" ( a Japanese TV show: "Journey by darts"), and going to a Japanese festival — were conducted, and ways to enhance students' enjoyment through the activities were suggested. Finally, the role of enjoyment in enhancing students' learning motivation are discussed. The results shows that students' enjoyment was enhanced, and they have become more active learners after participating in the activities. And then, after experiential learning, they have wished to get many new experiences.

This paper explores Haiku making gathering called kukai. There exist around 800 haiku groups in which Haiku authors make Haiku. Haiku group called kessha is hierarchically structured and an interesting object to be examined using an analytical concept "legitimate peripheral participation" proposed by Rave and Wenger. Kukai is an excellent opportunity for newcomer to observe aesthetics, power structure, and relationships between members. There are two types of kukai in a Haiku group J, of which I have carried out fieldwork. The first type is the headquarters kukai, in which around 40 members taka part. This kukai reproduces the power structure of the group and not very good space to carry out legitimate peripheral participation. The second type is branch kukai consists of around 10 to 15 participants. There are enough time for participants to discuss each Haiku of the participants. For this reason, this type kukai is more appropriate for newcomers' legitimate peripheral participation. These two types are, however, necessary for Haiku group J since the first type reproduces hierarchical power structure of the group, and the second one offers space in which participants including newcomers to internalize the aesthetics of the group.

The Spanish-American War started on April 23rd ,1898 and ended on August 12th of the same year, resulting in Spain being defeated. The defeat of this war gave Spain the "disaster of 1898", leaving it much to be reformed, and at the same time accelerated international disintegration of the Old World, the framework of which had been deteriorating since the early 19th century. On July 3rd ,1898 the Spanish Squadron was destroyed by the American Fleet off Sanchago de Cuba. The outcome at Sanchago de Cuba converted general trends of the war to be more favorable to the United States, and Spainユs attitude clearly took a different turn from then on. Spain inaugurated the quest for peace behind the scenes. This article attempts to investigate conditions of the so called the "disaster of 1898" of Spain by analyzing the mutual telegraphic communications between the Naval Ministry of Spain and admiral Cervera, commander in chief of the Spanish Squadron. The squadron set sail on April 7th,1898 from Cadiz for Puerto Rico, and was destroyed in the sea engagement off Sanchago de Cuba. With a good understanding of details of the "disaster of 1898", which would indicate how Spain was then, we will study its cause and effect in a context of Spainユs own history as well as in the historical context of international order. There are two collections of telegraphic communications. One is of Cervera's redaction, and the other is of the Naval Ministry of Spain. We will use mainly the former, and secondarily the latter in order to check if the Cervera's collection might include his political bias because he was well known before the war for his viewpoints in opposition to possible confrontation with the United States.

After the victory over the feudal powers (Tokugawa Bakuhan Taisei), Meiji Government started its office on January 3rd 1868 declaring the Restoration to the old autocratic Tenno(Monarchical) regime as its political cause, with total abolition of every feudal way and custom. As a matter of course came the reinstatement of the Emperor (Tenno) and the royal family in conformity with its old status. Then the government promulgated the Meiji Constitution on February 11th 1889, and adopted a constitutional form of government under the same political regime. On this changing context the royal family who were entitled to succession to the Emperor were politically marginalized and left behind social interest. Hirobumi Itoh who had worked for Japan three times as the prime minister was much concerned with this peculiar social condition, and made an effort to lift the royal family up to the previous social status considering that the royal family was essential for the balanced and secured development of the Japanese Tenno regime. This dissertation tries to attempt to put light on the process in which the royal family were secured from the political oblivion.

Why is Kobo Abe read by a textbook now? There is a problem of language art education, who took the leading a theme in novel reading and comprehension. Kobo Abe’s “Akaimayu” makes the problem relative. A learner is independent, and there is a possibility as the text which reads and gets in touch with substantiality of language activity. This essay looked for a possibility of such class practice in detail.

In recent years, “self-affirmation” has attracted attention in the education domain. However, in the self-affirmation research, definition set is different and by each researcher, factors on determining the definition can be pointed out problems such as is unclear. Therefore, in this study, the definition set of self-affirmation feeling went on the basis of the data obtained by the qualitative research. Consequently, “positive existence” as construct self affirmation and “stable self”, “confidence”, “acceptable” is obtained. Them based on the results of creating a college student edition self-affirmation scale, we have succeeded in the development of “college student version of self-affirmation sense measure” of two-factor item 9.

This study purports to reveal incipient scientific thinking observed in children’s daily plays which bring forth their interest in things and phenomena, and lead them to pursuing their spontaneous approaches to problems and questions. The author let preschool five-year-old children take part in sandbox play, soap bubble play, playing in the water color and mud ball play. I came to the following conclusion after analyzing children’s utterances and conversations during these plays.(1) I observed a lot of “temporary expression utterances” in sandbox play, soap bubble play, and playing in the water color. They are suitable teaching materials for developing incipient scientific thinking. In mud ball play, children make more utterances for building good friendly relations and cooperation than the utterances which cultivate incipient scientific thinking. The play is appropriate for building children’s social skills.(2) In mud-box play and color-water play, “temporary expression utterances” are often made. These plays are appropriate for cultivating awareness which will make up a significant part of the basic incipient scientific thinking itself. In mud ball play, on the other hand, “fundamental scientific utterances” often are made. It is a suitable play for nourishing incipient scientific thinking, while in soap bubble play, children often make “temporary expression utterances” and “fundamental scientific utterances”.

The purpose of present paper is to discuss how ASD and AD/HD features appear in WAIS-III response. I experience the WAIS-III with 20’s office worker who complained of a loss of motivation. He has been a “problem child” since he was a child. And he has been indicative of both ASD and AD/HD features.Today, Wechsler intelligence scale is often proceed for differential diagnosis of developmental disorder, such as autistic spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nevertheless a lot of studies have discussed the specific profiles about developmental disorder, the conclusion is not unclear. So I have a trial of discussion about the qualitative analysis of WAIS3 response, in this paper.

The aim of this thesis is to study Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale, ‘The Fisherman and his Soul’, from the view point of conscious, unconscious, id, collective unconscious, and especially anima by using psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and C. G. Jung.‘The Fisherman and his Soul’, which is contained in The House of Pomegranates, has been said to be the most ambiguous and complex of all his short stories. The story was probably written inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale ‘The Little Mermaid’ and Matthew Arnold’s ballad, ‘The Forsaken Merman’. All these works include an anima figure. This thesis explores the images of anima in ‘The Fisherman and his Soul’ and some other works and draws a conclusion as to how the fisherman, his soul, and the mermaid in this complex fairy tale are related.

The purpose of this study is to develop the Mindfulness Scale in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which draws attention as treatment of borderline personality disorder, based on previous studies. The author discovered that the scale has four factors: “emotional control”, “distress tolerance”, “effective interpersonal communication” and “core mindfulness”. This factor structure is more consistent with the DBT theory than those in previous studies. However, the validity and reliability of the scale need to be studied furthermore.

This article attempts to evaluate historically the result of the Spanish-American War in two contexts. One is in the history of Spain and the other is in the historical course of deterioration of the Old World. In the first context this article tries to calculate the financial burden due to the Paris Peace Conference held by the two nations and to study how unfavorable effects the burden had on the subsequent economic course of Spain. In the second one this article attempts to prove, by analyzing financial policy, rules and practices of wartime Spain, the assumption that Spanish style of thinking and form of behavior had been based on the order of the Old World. If the assumption is proved, it follows that the defeat of Spain could be considered not only to break down the Spanish values but also to accelerate disintegration and deterioration of the order of the Old World.

This paper analyzes the reactions emerging in Japan to The Cove; a movie that condemns the dolphin-hunting that is being conducted in a cove in Wakayama, Japan. In addition, it examines Japanese "national culture" and some of the present-day problems caused by the globalization of animal protection activities. My main focus is on the following three points. Firstly, I examine the reasons why the movie has evoked so much nationalism amongst Japanese viewers. Secondly, I argue how the movie itself is a blatant example of what Said calls "Orientalism" and finally I analyze some problems that could emerge if Japan defends the eating of dolphins and whales as inherently part of our "national culture." By treating the above issues, this paper posits that the movie, and those who produced it, are seriously flawed by what is called "Orientalism", because not only have they portrayed the fishermen at the cove as being ruthlessly cruel to animals, but they have portrayed the people of Japan as being in need of salvation.Concurrently, this paper stresses the following two points. Firstly, Japan's defense of the eating of dolphins and whales on the grounds of it being indispensable to national culture is problematic, because it is a shallow excuse that prevents us from presenting different opinions in Japan toward dolphin and whale hunting. Secondly, by using "national culture" as a defense against Western criticism of whale and dolphin consumption, Japan risks falling into the trap of becoming just as ethnocentrism as the Western nations.
