Real haptics has been a unsolved problem since its starting in 1940's. After many R&Ds including the early works in US and other countries, the bilateral control designed in acceleration space solves this issue. The quality of the touching and tactile sensation is heavily depends on transperancy between master side and slave side. The robust motion control which is equal to the acceleration control gives high transperancy. The real haptics is now key concept in 21st century where QOL should be the basis of the society. The various examples are also shown.

This paper discusses high frequency acoustic noise generated by an IH cooker. Mechanism of high frequency acoustic noise generation is clarified by the experimental study. Recently, influence of the electromagnetic wave on the human body is worried. The symptoms; user of home electronics appliances feels; are headache and nausea. There is a report that some users who are using IH cooking heater also feel these symptoms. We have discovered that the high frequency acoustic noise, which is generated from an IH cooker, indicates strong-level sound pressure. High frequency strong acoustic noise must not be ignored, because its danger on our health is reported scientifically and medical standpoints. Then, it becomes necessary to examine the suppressing method of high frequency acoustic noise. In this paper, generating mechanism of the high frequency (20 kHz ∼) acoustic noise is made clarify by the experiments. Further, we have experimentally cleared that the lid of a pan has important effect on the suppression of the high frequency acoustic noise.

<p> Linear DC motors often fit the drive field of which you request single stroke fast response below the 100 mm in particular. It is necessary to make the servo gain increased to drive LDM by fast-response. But displacement of LDM is easy to oscillate in increased gain. Amount of displacement is increase by pitching of LDM. It is desirable to install the displacement detection sensor at a position not affected by pitching behavior. This paper introduces the displacement detection position not affected by pitching.</p>

Unlike low-cost massive energy sources for grid systems, energy harvesting is a high-added-value power generation technologies, in which small power can be extracted from energy sources in the environment. Energy harvesting technologies will make an important contribution to autonomous devices including wireless sensor nodes by providing battery-less long-lived power source. Recently, significant efforts have been paid in the country and abroad toward various applications such as building energy management system.

Linear resonant actuators (LRAs) have been used in wide range of application because they can reciprocate in comparatively short stroke in spite of their compact size and lightweight. However, the amplitude of LRAs severely decreases in response to an external load. This paper proposes a control method to maintain constant amplitude against an external load by adopting the PID control in the PWM feedback control by the back-EMF detecting from the coil. The effectiveness of this method was clarified by both 3-D finite element analysis and the measurement.

The purpose of this report is to introduce and discuss about the design parameters for a segment of a tactile sensor which will be used to read one dot of a braille alphabet. A single segment of a tactile sensor, consisting of a piezoelectric (PVDF) film sandwiched between two elastic materials, is designed. The design parameters, regarding the geometry and Young's modulus of the sensor are introduced. Simulations are used to investigate the influence of the design parameter on the sensor output, and to show the design criterion in order to obtain enough large sensor output. The results show that 1) for obtaining enough large sensor output, the layer, which is closer to the contact point with the dot of a Braille alphabet, should be "thinner" than and have a "similar hardness" to the other layer, 2) the output of sensor is mostly dependent on the bending effect near the PVDF layer and the Clamped structure can encourage more bending.

Reversed field pinch (RFP) plasmas have been formed in a TS-3 device and an ohmic heating current drive was applied to support the plasma. In such condition, it was found that the direction of the toroidal field induced by the plasma current naturally inversed. A magnetic structure was finally formed like the spherical tokamak (ST) in which the direction of the toridal field induced by the plasma current is the same as the field generated by the external coil. To understand the dynamical change of the magnetic structure in this process, the toroidal field distributions, safety factor profiles and the profiles of plasma pressure are shown. All of these results indicate the transition phenomena of the magnetic structure from REP to low q ST. This phenomenon is also consistent with the latest report from another organization (Himeji Institute of Technology).

In this article, the author introduces two aquatic robots being developed in the author's laboratory: a miniature aquatic robot propelled by resonance of elastic plate and MINAMO (Multidirectional INtuitive Aquatic MObility). The former is a robot including a vibrating motor in the body shell and having an elastic plate fixed on the outer as a fin. The latter is a personal vehicle on water that realizes the straight and whirl movement by the control of the rider weight shifting.

A passive walker can walk down shallow slope with no energy source other than gravity. This motion is very attractive because its gait is really natural and ideal. Moreover, the walker can exhibit a stable limit cycle. Dynamics of passive walking is very interesting target and important for understanding human locomotion and developing the biped robots. In this paper, we introduce principles and applications of passive walking.

<p> When compressive stress is applied to electrical steel sheets in their thickness direction, both permeability and magnetic losses change. The stress induced loss reduction was observed both ring and strip specimens, and they are mainly from hysteresis loss change due to the stress. Magnetizing process due to the stress is discussed by means of domain observations.</p>

Electrophotography process as an application technology of electrostatic force was described briefly in terms of its principle and toner particle dynamics in the process. The improvement in image quality of the process requires a reduction in particle size. An issue for the reduction in particle size, that is, relative increment in impact of attractive force, was presented in the description. Chemical toner technology was introduced as recent topical activities for the issue. In addition, numerical simulation results of particle dynamics to study the quality of chemical toner particle motion were also presented.

<p>This study proposes long-range nondestructive inspection of the inner surface of a pipe without open end using microwave emitted by a probe attached to the pipe wall. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were conducted to evaluate how to propagate microwave effectively inside a pipe having an inner diameter of 19 mm. The simulations considered a coaxial cable penetrating the pipe wall to emit microwave inside the pipe. Experimental verifications were then carried out using a brass pipe with a total length of 4.5 m and a probe fabricated on the basis of the results of the numerical simulations. The experiment confirmed clear reflections due to artificial wall thinning 1 m away from the probe situated approximately at the center of the pipe. The experiment also revealed that directivity of the microwave depended on the frequency, which agrees with the results of the numerical simulations.</p>

This paper describes a basic concept of thermoelectric tubes. Construction of thermoelectric tubes has been done by making use of the off-diagonal thermoelectric effect, which is one of the direct energy conversion processes from heat into electricity. Here we also present a fabrication process and the current status of a feasibility study at a garbage incineration plant in Kyoto.
