The divergence and convergence of ideas is one of the most important processes in the general design process, not only in UX design. In particular, idea convergence is the process of narrowing down the design candidates for actual implementation, and it is necessary to select effective ideas effectively. However, there is currently no way to converge ideas specific to UX design. In addition, a survey the authors conducted with UX designers revealed a number of problems with the way ideas converge. Therefore, this study investigates a suitable method for idea convergence in the UX design process. First, we conduct a comparative analysis of the four existing idea convergence methods. After that, we will experiment with the Pugh Concept Selection to apply it to UX design and examine the issues when applying it.

Design-related "academic societies" are expected to serve as an interface for design practitioners and design researchers to exchange mutual knowledge. However, it is rare for practitioners with "field knowledge" gained from their daily practice to present their research. MIMIGURI, Inc., a facilitation consulting firm, has produced a handbook to support practitioners' analysis of their daily work and research theory culture. This study reviews the process of producing this handbook and examines effective measures to promote practitioners' participation in research activities within the firm.

This paper introduces the person-centered care principle, which prioritizes individuals’ values and preferences, and employs it to build a methodology for designing a novel person-centered care service. According to the person-centered design principle, we designed the processes of empathy and definition in design thinking which focus on unexpected behaviors and the backgrounds of care recipients. Those processes were conducted with care workers as a series of workshops. Though the workshop design had problems of comprehension of the unexpected behaviors and empathy with the backgrounds, the qualitative analysis on the workshop participants’ comments revealed the two effects: verbalization and visualization, and shared viewpoints among the workshop participants. This study contributes to a design field by the following three values; the employment of the person-centered care principle to a design field, the practice of the person-centered designed processes with care workers as a case study, and the evaluation of those processes by qualitative analysis.

In this paper, we examined the inevitable problem in establishing a method of “systematic review” in human-centered design research: how to recognize that a design case incorporates the process of human-centered design. In this paper, systematic review is a research method that aims to create new knowledge that practitioners themselves are not aware of by collecting and integrating case reports related to human-centered design and clarifying the differences and commonalities among the cases. It is important to extract and analyze reliable cases for systematic review. However, if the collection of cases to be reviewed is done inappropriately, the reliability of the findings may be impaired. Therefore, the author points out that in conducting a systematic review in human-centered design research, it is necessary to establish clear criteria for “how to approve the cases of human centered design to be studied in the systematic review.” This paper presents three directions of criteria for case selection and discusses the merits and demerits of each.

The purpose of this study is to explore a design approach to user experience design. This paper describes a design approach to user experience design based on user centered design as a platform method. To approach user experience design, universal design, brand design and smile design are described as a part of extension from user centered design. And also, two case study of user experience design are described.

Design thinking is a measure to enable human-centered policy design. METI, PA, and MEXT have released declarations and guidelines on design thinking, human-centered design, and service design. However, the authors could not find such training courses in the last five years at Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau of the MLIT who handles national land and infrastructure management. The authors conducted an employees’ training course on design thinking at Hokkaido MLIT, where trainees find problems and solutions at Tobetsu Town following the design thinking approach. The achievements include improving ideas being more human-centered than pre-course assignment, high recommendation rates, and enhancing trainees’ capabilities, especially in pushing forward the projects and listening.

This research hypothesizes that architecture and city legibility is an element that can increase consistency between the user's mental map and an actual map. This research focuses on the topological aspects of five city elements that form the mental map - as introduced in “The image of the city” - and attempts to establish a correlation with visual variations identified through tests of subject search behavior in architecture and cities using eye mark recorder. The result of this research will be to propose indexing and measurement methods for architecture and city legibility by quantifying complicated visual behavior through mental maps.

There has been widespread acknowledgement and acceptance of the user experience (UX) and the user experience design (UXD) in modern manufacturing and service industries. However, there seem to be several defects in utilizing UXD, due to the lack of appropriate knowledge on the UX and UXD. In this paper, several anti-patterns in UXD, such as the fraudulent UX, the excuse UX, and the self-serving UX are discussed. To avoid these unfortunate situations, some constructive discussions on these issues, considering them as the start point, will be highly expected.
