The sandwich-structured nanocomposite of α-ZrP/CoTMPyP [5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (N-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrinato cobalt (III)] was fabricated via electrostatic interaction between cobalt porphyrin and α-ZrP nanosheets. The obtained material was used as a modifier on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to test the electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen reduction, the results indicated that dioxygen was reduced to H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> via two-electron transfer.

High-quality CdSe quantum dots have been synthesized through an organometallic method with cadmium methoxide as a cadmium precursor. Without any size sorting, the FWHM (full width at half-maximum) in PL spectra almost for all CdSe samples is less than 30 nm and only 22 nm from the best sample. The emission peaks with different particle size in toluene can be tuned from 478 to 654 nm corresponding to a color change from blue-green to red.

5-Pyrimidyl alkanol with an enantiomeric excess of up to >99.5% was formed using chiral crystals of achiral tris(2-hydroxyethyl) 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate as a chiral initiator. In the enantioselective addition of diisopropylzinc to pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde, the helicity of the molecular arrangement of achiral tricarboxylate in the crystalline state could be successfully used as a source of chirality to afford enantioenriched alkanol in conjunction with asymmetric autocatalysis with amplification of enantiomeric excess.

Synthesis of (1S,2R)-1-[(E)-hex-1-en-1-yl]-2-vinylcyclopropane (dictyopterene A), which was isolated from the essential oil of algae of the genus Dictyopteris in Hawaii, has been demonstrated using optically active tributylstannylcyclopropane as a starting chiral synthon.

A novel recognition element has been synthesized using glycopolymer-modified gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in sugar ratios of 0, 6, 12, and 50%. The as-synthesized glycopolymer-modified GNPs have been employed in a novel lateral flow assay for the detection of proteins. A test solution of concanavalin A (ConA) at 0.01–100 µg mL−1 was readily detectable with the glycopolymer-modified GNPs with a sugar ratio of 6%. The results were clear enough to be visible with the naked eye, which demonstrates the convenience of this lateral flow assay for performing the detection of Shiga toxins and influenza viruses. Therefore, this lateral flow assay provides an attractive biosensor for the detection of proteins without the handling of toxic reagents, while allowing an easy and rapid procedure.

[2]Rotaxanes constructed with an ethereal end-capped axle and a dibenzo-24-crown-8 wheel were synthesized from pseudorotaxanes bearing an alcoholic terminus and diaryl-diazomethanes using diphenyl phosphate as a catalyst. The reaction proceeded at room temperature in nonpolar solvents within several hours. The [2]rotaxanes thus obtained behaved as ammonium salts derived from a very strong base such as DBU. Thus, the amine form of the [2]rotaxane reacted with a weak acid, CO2–H2O, to give a bicarbonate salt of the [2]rotaxane, which turned back to the amine form after drying followed by evacuation.

On irradiation with UV light, the photochromic dimer of 1,4-bis(imidazolyl)tetrafluorobenzene produced the colored transient species in solution and solid. Though the dimerization reaction to form the photochromic dimer prevents the isolation and characterization of the colored species at room temperature, the single crystals of the colored species could be successfully obtained from the light-irradiated toluene solution of the dimer at 200 K, and the molecular structure of the colored species is unambiguously determined by the X-ray diffraction analysis.

Photocatalytic degradation in multiple contaminant system with a nitrogen-doped TiO2 visible-light photocatalyst was investigated. Formaldehyde and toluene were chosen as components of the contaminant. The degradation rate of toluene was depressed by coexisting formaldehyde, while that of formaldehyde was scarcely affected by coexisting toluene. This phenomenon is attributed to preferential adsorption of formaldehyde on the photocatalyst powder.

Silica nanospheres (SNSs) synthesized with different base catalysts assemble into one-dimensional (1D) chain-like nanostructures at proper pH levels in the presence of the block copolymer F127. The addition of basic amino acids or the removal of base catalysts by dialysis influences the pH of 1D assembly. The base molecules affect assembly by modifying the electrostatic repulsion among the SNSs; however, they are not indispensable for this 1D assembly phenomenon.

Novel azolate-type ionic liquids (ILs), alkyltributylphosphonium benzimidazolates (alkyl chain: methyl, butyl, and octyl), were prepared by neutralization of the corresponding alkyltributylphosphonium hydroxides with benzimidazole. All the azolate-type ILs prepared here showed high ionic conductivities above 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C, and good thermal stability over 300 °C. They are expected to be useful platforms for functional ILs having good thermal stabilities.

In this study, phase changes, catalytic active species that appeared at the phase change, and the corresponding water tolerance of samples obtained upon thermal treatment from K2CO3-supported microsized and nanosized sodalite as diesel-soot combustion catalyst are examined. We have shown the successful preparation of nepheline with water tolerance from sodalite as starting material. It is confirmed that the interaction between alkali metal carbonate and crystalline aluminosilicate is prerequisite for enhancing water tolerance of the catalytically active component, Na/K carbonate, located on the nepheline.

[{Cp*Rh(S2C6H4)}2W(CO)2] (Cp*: η5-C5Me5) (1) and [{Cp*Rh(S2C6H4)}(S2C6H4)W(CO)2] (2) were synthesized by the reaction of rhodadithiolene [Cp*Rh(S2C6H4)] with [W(CO)3(py)3], and their crystal structures and physical properties were investigated. The formation mechanism of 2 from 1 was pursued by 1H NMR spectroscopy. 1 reacted with an excess amount of BF3·Et2O to furnish 2, indicating that a Lewis acid assisted the demetalation reaction.

We propose a novel, noncompetitive, label-free, and on-chip immunoassay format based on the excluded volume effect by a target antibody that is itself bound to the corresponding epitope on a biochip. The advantage of the present method is that it only requires a biotin-tethering peptide epitope (capture agent) and fluorophore-labeled-avidin (a signal-generating agent) pair for signal readout. The method is based on the interaction between a nonlabeled target antibody and the corresponding peptide epitope of the antigen decelerating the association rate of the fluorophore-labeled avidin to the biotin moiety at the end of the peptide epitope due to the excluded volume effect of the target antibody. This causes significant changes in signal intensity. Without the target antibody, there is no interference in the binding of the signal-generating agent. The use of other specific interactions would allow fine-tuning of the excluded volume and binding rate to the capture agent to improve sensitivity and versatility.

In this account we describe ethynylene-conjugated arylethynylanthraquinone (ArAq) and bis(arylethynyl)anthraquinone (Ar2Aq) which possess ferrocene, triarylamine, platinadithiolene complex, p-methoxybenzene, p-methylbenzene, m-methylbenzene, and benzene as electron-donating arenes (Ar), and anthraquinone (Aq) as an electron acceptor. This series of compounds features donor–acceptor (D–A) interactions: (1) Expression of intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) transitions; (2) flexible single crystal networks constructed by intermolecular D–A π–π stacking, which undergo guest-induced reversible crystal-to-crystal transformations. In addition, ArAq and Ar2Aq experience proton-induced cyclization so as to produce pyrylium and dipyrylium salts. These salts feature further expanded π-conjugation and stronger D–A interaction: (1) More red-shifted ICT transitions and narrower HOMO–LUMO gaps; (2) bright fluorescence; (3) valence tautomerism (VT); (4) unique reactivities.

Uranium is toxic to the human body with mechanisms not fully understood. The interaction between uranyl ion (UO22+) and ubiquitin (Ub) was predicted by molecular modeling, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulation. The structural and dynamics consequences, as well as protein unfolding behavior, upon uranyl binding to two surface residues of Ub, Glu18 and Asp21, were revealed at an atomic level. This in silico study exhibits a possibility of UO22+ binding to Ub, providing a possible mechanism of uranyl toxicity in vivo.

We have investigated the DBU-promoted HBr-elimination of vicinal dibromides having an adjacent O- and/or N-functional group under mild basic conditions. The elimination of 1-oxygen-functionalized 2,3-dibromopropanes was more regioselective than that of 1-nitrogen-functionalized 2,3-dibromopropanes. This observation suggests that the elimination selectivity is affected by the electronegativity of the neighboring heteroatoms themselves and not by the entire functional group.

Ruthenium-catalyzed ortho-selective acylation of arylpyridines with acyl chlorides via C–H bond cleavage is described. Aromatic acyl chlorides as well as α,β-unsaturated acyl chlorides were coupled with arylpyridines to give aromatic ketones in the presence of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] as a catalyst and potassium carbonate as a base.

Thiolato-bridged hexanuclear mixed-valence complex, [CuI3CuII3(apampt)3Cl6] (Hapampt=1-[(3-aminopropyl)amino]-2-methylpropane-2-thiol), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Spectroscopic data as well as structural features support a localized mixed-valence state. Magnetic susceptibility data show that a strong antiferromagnetic interaction is operating between the CuII ions.

The mechanism of the Cope rearrangement of 1,5-hexadienes remains controversial. Two pathways for the rearrangement of 2,5-diphenyl-1,5-hexadiene have been debated over the past several decades. The first is a concerted route that takes place via a pericyclic transition state and the other is a stepwise process via a biradical intermediate or biradicaloid transition structure. In this study, we explored a new intramolecular trapping approach to examine the possible existence of the putative biradical that might intervene in the stepwise Cope rearrangement. For this purpose, a study was carried out in which a 1,5-hexadiene, bearing two lophyl radicals at C2 and C5 positions, moieties capable of trapping a putative biradical intermediate intramolecularly, was designed, generated, and characterized both experimentally and with density functional theory.

The title compounds having two 9-triptycyl rotors, two acetylene shafts, and an acene base were synthesized by coupling reactions as molecular spur gears. Their molecular structures were compared to evaluate the meshing of rotor moieties and the orientation of the two gear shafts. The mechanism of rotation of three-toothed rotors was explored by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations in terms of gear rotation and slippage.
