A Japanese version of the Self-efficacy for Statistical Literacy Scale was developed. In a preliminary study with college students (N = 110), a Japanese translation was developed based on the English version of this scale. In Study 1, the resulting Japanese version was verified in terms of validity and reliability with high school and college students (N = 275). Results from Study 1 showed that self-efficacy for statistical literacy is positively correlated with subjective numeracy and critical thinking disposition. The mathematical score positively predicted self-efficacy for statistical literacy. In Study 2, we considered the extent to which self-efficacy for statistical literacy would change between before and after statistics education among high school students (N = 167). Results from Study 2 suggested that self-efficacy for statistical literacy is enhanced by statistics education. Free-text descriptions provided by the participants revealed that they could accurately interpret numerical values and had higher interest in the study of psychology and their future career options. Potential contributions to education and study limitations are discussed.

In recent years, there has been a growing social movement in Japan to develop better work styles. With this background, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between achievement goals and meaningful work in Japan to replicate studies conducted in the West. In addition, we also examined whether an occupational classification moderates the relationship between achievement goals and meaningful work. To this end, we conducted a web survey comprising of blue- and white-collar workers (N = 792) aged 19 to 69. Multiple regression analysis showed that mastery-approach and performance-approach goals were relatively strongly related to meaningful work. Additionally, among white-collar workers, it was observed that performance-approach goals had a positive relationship with meaningful work while performance-avoidance goals had a negative relationship. These results suggested that, in Japan, both mastery-approach and mastery-avoidance goals are related to meaningful work, and that the relationship between performance goals and meaningful work differs based on the goals in the occupation.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of numeracy on risk and benefit perceptions of food. Previous studies have shown that people tend to rely on affect feelings when appraising risk and benefit. These studies have also shown that people manifest an inverse relationship between perceived risk and benefit. However, there have not been so many studies about the roles of numeracy and critical thinking on balanced perceptions of risk and benefit. Therefore, the present study used two online surveys to clarify their roles. Results showed that people with higher numeracy had better comprehension of food risk/benefit information. Results also showed that perceived risk and benefit had a positive correlation for people with higher numeracy after information had been provided. These results were similar between Study 1 on coffee (N = 461) and Study 2 on red and processed meat (N = 496). The results suggest that people with higher numeracy have balanced perceptions of food risk/benefit, relying more on numerical information than on affect.

It is required to make risk education popular to improve risk literacy of citizens. Although several kinds of risk education programs have been developed, the effect of the education by those should be evaluated and the method to measure risk literacy was not established. Therefore, measurement scales of the risk literacy have been developed through web-based questionnaire research. As the result, measurement scales have been established consisting of six factors; zero-risk bias, trade-off on risk versus benefit, trade-off on risk versus risk, paradox on risk perception, basic knowledge on risk and risk perception bias. The scales consisted of four questions for each factor express the factors well. The scales are thought to be useful for improving risk education program and risk communication.

食品は生きるために必要な栄養分を供給するが,多くの食品に発がん物質が含まれていることも否定できない事実である。例えば,国際がん研究機関(International Agency for Research on Cancer: IARC)が 2015 年に加工肉や赤肉に発がん性があると発表したことは,マスコミで取り上げられるや否や国内で大きな話題となった(農林水産省,2015)。こうしたことから,リスクとベネフィットを比較検討して食品を選択することが重要と考えられる。The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of numeracy on risk and benefit perceptions of food.
