Soccer is the most popular sport worldwide, with over 265 million participants. Soccer is unique in that the ball can be directed deliberately and purposefully with the head, an act referred to as ‘heading’. In recent years, there has been concern about the association between repetitive subconcussive head impacts associated with heading and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Heading causes immediate changes in biochemical and electrophysiological markers of traumatic brain injury, and some studies have reported brain structural changes and dysfunction in former soccer players. In 2019, it was reported that the mortality associated with neurodegenerative diseases was about 3.5 times higher among former professional soccer players. Following that, in early 2020, the guidance have been published to limit heading by age in some regions including England and Scotland. In this review, we will expound the immediate and long-term effects of heading associated with chronic traumatic encephalopathy and the measures that should be taken into consideration in the practice of soccer instruction, based on the latest findings.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between running distance over an 8-month period and both 5000 m running performance and aerobic capacity (VO2max, VO2VT, running economy). The 8-month study period was divided into two segments of 4 months each. It was found that long-distance athletes could run 5000 m in about 15 min 30 s. The analysis also confirmed the following: (1) athletes that ran longer distances in the 8-month period had better 5000m times; (2) they had higher VO2VT; and (3) athletes whose distances were longer in the first half of the study period had better VO2VT and 5000m records in the second half of the period. The anaerobic threshold reached a higher level in runners with greater training distance, resulting in an improvement in race results. Furthermore, based on the fact that the distance run in the first four months effects on VO2VT and 5000 m running times in the latter four months, this study demonstrates the possibility of training effects occurring after a certain latency period. The results implicated that it was important to track running distances as an indicator of race performance.

<p> 中長距離選手の走の経済性(RE)に及ぼすSSC(stretch-shorten cycle)の影響に関する研究では、プライオメトリックトレーニングと競技成績の関係に関する報告がいくつかある。しかし、SSC能力が走の経済性に及ぼす影響についてはあまり報告されていない。本研究は大学男子中長距離選手12名を対象に、VO<sub>2</sub>16km、% VO<sub>2</sub>max(VO<sub>2</sub>16km/ VO<sub>2</sub>max)、16km/h走行時の重心上下動(GH)、平均ストライド長(SL)およびリバウンドジャンプ(RJ)とドロップジャンプ(DJ)接地時間および跳躍高を測定し、それぞれの関係について検討した。その結果、(1)% VO<sub>2</sub>maxとRJ接地時間にr=0.641(P<0.05)の有意な相関関係が認められた。(2)重心上下動とストライド長および重心上下動とRJ跳躍高との間にそれぞれr=0.868(P<0.01)およびr=0.660(P<0.05)の有意な関係が認められた。(3)重心上下動とVO<sub>2</sub>16kmおよび% VO<sub>2</sub>maxとの間に有意な関係性は認められなかった。このことから、RJ接地時間の短い選手ほど走の経済性(% VO<sub>2</sub>max)が良いことが示唆された。</p>
