This article examines examples and background of the use of newsprint as materials for building since the mid-Meiji period. The following points become clear. Newspaper was widely used as protective paper for columns, underlayment for sliding doors and ceilings, and wallpaper after the middle of the Meiji period. The use as wallpaper was mainly in Manchuria and other regions.Newspaper was used for the underlining of sliding doors, replacing antique paper. In architectural research, finding newspaper as a building material provides a clue to the date of construction.

This article examined the building used the Japanese nail and the Western nail together, and following points became clear.The combination of the Japanese nail and the Western nail began in the advanced area early in the Meiji era and concentrated on it generally in the latter half from the Meiji early 10s.There was a dual circulation period for the switch of the Western nail from the Japanese nail, and every use point was gradually rearranged from the Japanese nail to the Western nail.

新日本石油加工株式会社柏崎工場は明治35(1902)年に操業を開始した製油工場である。ドラム缶塗装場は明治42(1909)年の建築で、渡辺六四郎の施工による煉瓦建造物である。工場所有の資料を調査した結果、「構内建物平面図 原紙」より大正元(1912)年の増築が判明し、「製缶場及容器係控室雪崩止めの図」及び「ドラム缶塗装場照明器具取替工事」より、昭和35(1960)年頃に行われた「製缶場」から「ドラム缶塗装場」への用途変更等が明らかとなった。

喬柏園(きょうはくえん)新潟県柏崎市西本町に存在する公共施設で、高橋忠平(ちゅうへい)・サワ夫妻による公会堂建設費と建設地(自邸の宅地・建物・庭園)の寄付によって成立したものである。敷地は柏崎の海岸に並列する砂丘列上に3層の石垣を築き建造されたもので、下層には旧柏崎公会堂と庭園、中層には高橋夫妻が離れ座敷として用いた中段の間が現存したが、平成19(2007)年7月16日に発生した新潟県中越沖地震によって被災し、石垣・庭園・中段の間は解体撤去された。
