The present study aimed to investigate whether the laws of isochrony and homothety hold for Japanese characters by measuring handwriting movements using a liquid crystal display tablet. The law of isochrony means that handwriting time is constant regardless of handwriting size. The law of homothety means that the time required for each character is consistent regardless of the overall time required during continuous handwriting. The twenty-two participants made three shapes, four hiragana characters (Japanese phonetic alphabets),and four kanji characters (Chinese characters) on a tablet at various sizes and speeds. Total handwriting time was longer when character size increased for all character types. This result suggests that the law of isochrony does not hold for Japanese character types. When the characters were written sequentially, the partial handwriting time ratio was indefinite and, varied by character. This result suggests that the law of homothety might not hold for some characters. In summary, this study suggests that the spatiotemporal dynamics of handwriting in Japanese differ by character.

新型コロナウイルス感染症(COVID-19)の世界的な感染拡大にともない,多くの大学ではキャンパス内での感染予防のために,キャンパスの封鎖とインターネット越しに授業を配信するオンライン授業が導入され,学生たちは自宅から授業に参加している.このような在宅中心の新しい生活様式は,感染予防効果が見込める一方で,運動不足による二次的な健康被害が懸念される.新しい生活様式における大学生の身体活動の実態,特に学生の属性や時間帯ごとの身体活動量とその内容を明らかにすることは,二次的な健康被害を予防するうえで必要不可欠である.そこで本研究では,日常生活中の身体活動データ(歩数と6種類の行動種別)を大学生が所有するスマートフォンを用いて自動収集し,大学生の身体活動量を明らかにする.身体活動データは,必修の体育授業を履修する大学1年生305名から10週間収集した.その結果,通学(7時から10時)や教室での授業,課外活動(11時から24時)の時間帯における歩数の減少と静止時間の長時間化が明らかになった.本結果は,新しい生活様式における大学生活が平日の身体活動量の低下を招く可能性を示唆する.

When conducting experimental psychology, psychological phenomena are often described in mathematical terms and logic. How practical is the mathematical approach in experimental psychology? This paper aims to explain plain linguistic and mathematical expressions, how psychological phenomena are expressed mathematically in experimental psychology and how mathematical models are constructed, using examples of psychological phenomena related to sensation, perception, and cognition. First, it outlined the perspective, thinking, and utilization of mathematical models in experimental psychology, using some psychological phenomena. Second, it was introduced that several previous studies dealt with spatial properties of perceptual and cognitive phenomena, including the author’s studies. It is hoped that this paper will increase familiarity with and opportunities to utilize mathematical models in experimental psychology.

People are generally unable to correctly determine the fixation point from the gaze direction when facing another person. This study investigated this tendency from the viewpoint of the anisotropy of space. Experiment 1 showed that compared with the physical space, the gaze perceptional space was 1.227 times larger laterally and 0.516 times narrower sagittally, suggesting that the gaze perceptional space has an orthotropic property. Furthermore, this space had an anisotropic property in the oblique direction. In Experiment 2, the space was constructed from the verbal cues of distance and angle, with the same size as the physical space in Experiment 1. Compared with the physical space, the space constructed from the verbal cues was 0.866 times larger laterally and 0.783 times narrower sagittally. These results show that the gaze perceptional space differs from the space constructed by verbal cues in terms of the degree of anisotropy. They also suggest that gaze direction was not judged on the basis of quantitative verbal representation concerning distance and angle.
