The purpose of this study was to investigate skilled movement and control of tempo during play Japanese Drum. Eight subjects participated in this experiment and divided into two groups (Expert and Novice) according to years of experience. They performed drum the Japanese Drum by three tempos (M.M.=60, M.M.=120, M.M.=180). Joint angle and angle velocity (shoulder, elbow, wrist) of upper limbs and EMG activity from deltoideus anterior, biceps brashii, triceps brachii, extensor carpi radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris were recorded and compared expert to novice players. As a result, kinetic chain in which the agonist muscles actived from proximal to distal (shoulder - elbow - wrist) with short interval in the expert players. This kinetic chain was considered to be "stick movement". Particularly, extend of shoulder angle and snap of the wrist increased compared with the novice players. In addition, to control for tempo, expert players did not changed the order of EMG activity and joint angle, while novice players held them shoulder joint tightly.
