With the construction of streetcar line 'Yunokawa-Sen' in early Taisho era, the suburb, in the east area of Hakodate, had been developed. The men who had developed this area in early stage were philanthropists. Most of the residential areas were developed linearly along the road of the former field, which ran at right angles to 'Yunokawa-sen'. The establishment of Housing Unions in Hakodate started just before the peak of the rate of increase of housing areas. 'Hakodate-Jutaku-Kumiai' had a remarkable influence on the development 'Bunka-Mura'. In 'Midorimachi-Dori', dwellings by housing unions initiated the owner-occupation. Moreover the residents of housing unions built up sustainable community as mentioned on several newspapers.

They comprise 10 public buildings, 25 industrial buildings and 50 dwelling houses. Here described are the appearances and alterations of ten buildings selected from them, including the Historical Museum (1938), the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank (1931, now Municipal Art Museum), both in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and so on.

We could trace back the building activities of emigrant carpenters from Echigo (present Niigata Prefecture) in Hokkaido since the seventeenth century to Meiji Era (1868-1912). After 1855 when the port of Hakodate was opened for foreign ships, there several large constructions fascinated many building workers including several capable carpenters from Echigo region. In early Meiji Era, the Kaitakushi (Colonial Department) gathered 51 carpenters in 1871 singularly from Maze, a tiny coastal village in Echigo, and next year 367 from Echigo for the constructions in Sapporo. Among them, and among those who emigrated after them, there were Kazaemon (c.1832-c.1892) and Yojiro (1864-1940) Shinoharas, Kyushiro Abe (1849-1910), Kametaro Ito (1863-1944) and others who founded their contractor companies of construction.

This paper clarifies the development process of Mashike-cho and examines the relationship between the development process and existing thirty-eight historical buildings in the town. Mashike-cho had prospered as a fishing village and its fundamental structure was established by the public land readjustment held in 1881 after the big fire. The Ekimaedori street since the establishment of the railway station, Suzurandori street, Ohdori street, and Kagai district(an entertainment district) became the main part of the town. Historical buildings since the Meiji and Taisho era still remain mainly in those former entertainment and shopping area. Those historical buildings can be recognized as important properties describing the historical development of Mashike-cho.
