I report predation of the tanaidacean crustacean Zeuxo ezoensis OKAMOTO et al., 2020 by a captive individual of Haliclystus tenuis KISHINOUYE, 1910 collected from algae in Oshoro Bay, Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. The behavioral sequence was as follows. Immediately after Z. ezoensis touched the tentacles of H. tenuis, the latter rapidly folded its arms inward and trapped Z. ezoensis inside the calyx. The tanaidacean was digested by six hours after ingestion, except for the exoskeleton, which was ejected from the calyx eight hours after ingestion. Although no tanaidacean has previously been reported as prey for Staurozoa, Z. ezoensis is abundant on algae inhabited by H. tenuis in Oshoro Bay and would be exposed to predation by H. tenuis in the wild.

Personal computers (PCs) are now indispensable to any field of study, and it is important to master efficient ways to compose documents, analyze data, and manage literature. This is especially true of illustrations, which take much time and repeated editing prior to use in publications, posters, presentations, and so on. Although some reports exist on techniques for making digital illustrations there has been rapid progress in the development of new PC hardware and software, so that some types of previously intractable digital graphical processing methods are now feasible and even routine. In this report, we introduce an easy and efficient way to make digital illustrations based on recent progress in software development. Using as an example small arthropods, our main study subject, we demonstrate a digital illustration method implemented in Adobe^[○!R] Illustrator CS3^[○!R], and describe the use of CombineZ, a focus stacking software.

We report six freshwater ostracods from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido, Japan: Cypricercinae sp., Cavernocypris sp.1, Ca. sp.2, Cypridopsis vidua, Candonini sp., and Metacypris cf. digitiformis. This is the first report of freshwater ostracods from this island. We provided brief descriptions of their morphology, presented partial nucleotide sequences for their mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) and/or nuclear 18S rRNA genes, and determined a partial 16S rRNA sequence for the endosymbiotic bacterium Cardinium in some species. A key to six species collected from this island was presented.

We found the ciliophoran protozoan Lagenophrys sp. to be symbiotic on the freshwater ostracod Cryptocandona sp., collected from Makkari, Hokkaido, Japan. In Japan, this is the third record of Lagenophrys and the first case from ostracods. We present a nucleotide sequence for the 18S rRNA gene (1,683 bp) from Lagenophrys sp. In an 18S maximum-likelihood tree that included 57 peritrichid sequences, Lagenophrys sp. grouped with the usconophryid Usconophrys sp.

Preliminary results of the deep-sea faunal survey conducted from the TR/V Seisui-maru of Mie University in April 2019 are presented. A total of 20 taxonomists and ecologists working on a wide variety of animal taxa participated in this survey. Surveyed areas included the Kumano Sea(off Mie Prefecture)and south of the Kii Strait(off Tanabe Bay, Wakayama Prefecture), at depths of 112-775 m. Sampling gears employed were beam trawl and biological dredge. The collection is represented by macrobenthos and meiobenthos from nine animal phyla, including echinoderms, arthropods, molluscans and annelids. The number of phyla occurring in each station varied from seven to eight. The station with most diverse fauna at the phylum level was St. 3B(south of the Kii Strait, 775-661 m depth, mud bottom).Meiofauna includes priapulids, nematodes and small arthropods such as copepods, tanaidaceans, amphipods, isopods and cumaceans. In addition to freeliving species, cnidarians symbiotic on a gastropod and an antipatharian, and crustaceans parasitic on a fi sh and sea urchins were also collected. Preliminary identifi cations are given for Asteroidea, Ophiuroidea, Holothuroidea, Crinoidea, Cyclopoida, Siphonostomatoida, Tanaidacea, Isopoda, Decapoda, Mollusca, polychaetes, Bryozoa, Cnidaria and Nemertea.

In this study, we had investigated the benthic deep-sea fauna using the dredge and beam trawl in the region from the continental shelf to the continental slope of the Sea of Kumano, Mie Prefecture, during the No.1722 research voyage of the training ship Seisui-Maru of Mie University. The survey was carried out at 16 stations covering a depth range of 113-1059 m. The results of the survey, 14 phyla had been confirmed. Arthropod, echinoderm, annelid and molluscan macrobenthos were collected from all of the stations. The phylum number of each station was in the range from 4 to 11. The largest number of phyla had been confi rmed at St.10D of boulders bottom(768-800 m depth). Meiobenthos confi rmed in our sample were kinorhynchs, nematodes, tardigrades, loriciferans and small arthropods such as tanaidaceans, copepods and cumaceans. In addition to free-living species, parasitic copepods, isopods, platyhelminthes, acanthocephalans and nematodes had been found in fish, crustaceans and polychaetes.

Although the 2018 symposium of the Japanese Society of Systematic Zoology, entitled ‘Recent progress and future potential in faunal studies of the submarine caves in the Ryukyu Islands’ was scheduled to be held on the occasion of the 89th annual meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan in Hokkaido, it was unfortunately canceled due to the earthquake ‘2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake’. However, the five interesting articles were given by the special invited authors: 1) Yoshihisa Fujita ‘The fauna of decapod crustaceans in submarine caves of the Ryukyu Islands, with special reference to environmental factors in the caves’, 2) Yuji Ise ‘Preliminary report of submarine cave sponges in Shimoji Island, Miyako Islands, Okinawa’, 3) Mitchitaka Shimomura ‘Review of recent taxonomic studies of peracarid crustaceans in submarine and anchialine caves of the Ryukyu Islands’, 4) Masanori Okanishi and Yoshihisa Fujita ‘Ophiuroids from submarine caves of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan’, and 5) Akira Iguchi, Masaru Mizuyama, Takefumi Yorisue and Yoshihisa Fujita ‘Current situation and future issues of DNA studies of submarine caves of the Ryukyu Islands’. In this paper, we introduce the purpose and the contents of this special issue.
