This paper describes the folding/wrapping methods of thin flat circular membranes by using folding patterns prescribed by combining two groups of equiangular spirals. By using both folding conditions at nodes and continuous conditions of equiangular spiral type folding lines in the membranes, 2 kinds of folding patterns have been analytically designed ; (1)folding patterns consisting of pseudo equiangular spiral (zigzag type spiral) and equiangular spirals, and (2) folding patterns consisting of two groups of equiangular spirals. The availability of present folding/warpping methods of thin circular membranes has been verified by manufacturing paper and very thin metal sheet samples.

This paper describes folding methods of thin flat sheets as well as thin cylinders by modelling folding patterns through Japanese traditional Origami technique. New folding patterns have been deviced in thin flat squared or circular membranes by modifying so called Miura-Ori(one node with 4 folding lines). Some folding patterns in thin cylinders have newly been developed including spiral configurations. Developed foldable cylinders were made by using polymer sheets, and it has been assured that they can be folded very well. The deviced models will make it possible to construct foldable/developable space structures as well as to manufacture foldable bottles for beverages.

The aim of this paper is to invent foldable (or developable) conical shells in their axial direction. Foldable conical shells with several different types of folding patterns have newly been designed by geometrical considerations with the help of Origami concept. By using thin polypropylane sheet as well as papers, the designed conical shells with prescribed folding lines were actually manufactured, and it was verified that the shells are fully folded as expected. The designed models will make it possible to construct foldable/developable structures such as tents and dome-roof or to manufacture new types of industrial products.

This study illustrates a new strategy to fabricate arbitrary cross-section honeycombs. These types of honeycombs are usually manufactured from normal flat honeycombs by curving or carving, but the proposed method enables us to construct objective shaped honeycombs directly. We first introduce the concept of the kirigami honeycomb, which is made from single flat sheets and has periodical slits resembling kirigami (Japanese art of study folding and cutting). In previous studies, honeycombs having various shapes, including tapered and aerofoil honeycombs, were made using this method, and were realized by only changing folding line diagrams (FLDs). In this study, these 3D kirigami honeycombs are generalized by numerical parameters and fabricated using a newly proposed FLD design method, which enables us to draw the FLD of arbitrary cross-section honeycombs

児童・生徒の理系離れが深刻化している。特に幾何学を苦手とする児童・生徒が多くなっている。科学技術にブレイクスルーをもたらす3次元幾何学に関する思考能力を習得する必要があることは明らかであることから、本研究では初等・中等教育過程において幾何学を楽しみながら習得できる教材として折り紙を基に開発を行った。児童・生徒は興味を示し、それらを教材化することが望ましいことがわかった。

The present author proposed 'Origami Technology', and envisages the formation of a new discipline; mathematical analysis of Origami and its development in academic applications especially in engineering use. Origami structures consisting of zigzagged faces have foldable/deployable functions as well as solidification characters. Models presented in this paper include typical foldable/deployable thin cylinders, conical-shaped membranes, circular sheets which may be folded or wrapped. These shape-changeable origami models are analytically designed by folding or creasing a flat sheet or a thin plate into a 3-dimentional shape. New types of ultra-light 3-D honeycomb core models and a newly developed core panel named "dia-core" (consisting of 2 periodically dimpled panel pieces) are also presented for use in building such as aerospace structures. The former models are designed by analyzing the helical patterns or structures often found in living organisms, because such helical structures are easily deployed due to the presence of fewer dynamic restraints. The latter are developed on purely geometrical basis. As for academic applications of Origami modeling, two examples are shown; the phyllotaxis of leaves or flowers showing helical patterns, and axial buckling and torsional buckling of cylindrical tubes and conical shells are explained by using origami modeling.

近年、算数・数学を敬遠する子供が増えている。この数学離れの問題を解決する手段として折紙を用いて、エデュテインメント性に富む教材の開発を行った。報告者らは数理に基づく工学用の折り紙モデルや動植物の形態を模擬した折り紙モデルを数多く開発してきたが、本研究ではこれらの研究で定式化した折りたたみの基礎理論とこれに基づき設計された膨大なモデルを基に、エデュテインメント性に富む折り紙教材を開発し、数学教材用のモデルを系統的に構築した。

The purpose of this paper is to present foldable tubes or conical shells with such non-circular cross-sections as rectangular ones. The developments of these structures consist of the combinations of two or more kinds of differently shaped structual elements, which form spiral configurations. Several kinds of such foldable tubes as well as conical shells are newly developed. Origami samples of foldable tubes and conical shells have been manufactured and their foldabilities have been checked. It has been assured that all samples are perfectly folded in axial direction.

軽量で高剛性、高強度のコア構造は省資源に役立つことからますます重要となる。コアの代名詞でもあるハニカムコアは熱に弱く、高価であるもののハニカムに代わるものは得られていない。本研究提案の、折紙工学と空間充填理論によって得られたダイアコアは「日本の折紙の産業応用への大いなる可能性」として本年7月にNatureに取り上げられた。この可能性ある折紙工学が確かに産業応用されるためには計算力学援用による安価な成型法の確立、機能の最適化が必要である。これまでの強度・剛性に関する検討からダイアコアはハニカムコアに総合力で優ることが示され、10月9日の日刊工業新聞の第1面に取り上げられた。更に、我々は既存の角柱型のコアモデルとは全く異なる、正多面体、準正多面体の空間充填形や、捩れ多面体等の形を持つ数々の独創的なコア構造を創案している。本研究では、ダイアコアの安価な製造法の確立、遮熱、吸音・遮音などの機能創出などを行うとともに、角柱型でない新しい概念に基づくコア構造に関しても同様に、計算力学を援用し新しい意匠デザイン、機能創出と安価な成型法の開発を目指した。ただし、今回の期間(平成20年4月-5月)では、ダイアコアの成形シミュレーションの手法開発を行った。
