This translation and analysis of Imagawa Ryōshun's Nan Taiheiki examines the events that led him to write the work, namely his dismissal from the office of Kyūshū tandai and his subsequent participation in the Ōei Disturbance. After the rebellion ended in failure, he spent the rest of his life writing and critiquing literature. Nan Taiheiki, written around 1402, was a product of this period and of his rancor toward the Ashikaga chieftain Yoshimitsu. While the original Nan Taiheiki has no chapters or section headings, a close examination reveals three fundamental concerns. First, a focus on the Ashikaga's status as a collateral family of the Minamoto, which gave them a near divine right to lordship. In order to protect his family from "becoming lowly people without name or rank," Ryōshun asserts his family's loyalty to the Ashikaga, in the process laying the groundwork for his criticism of Yoshimitsu later in the work. Second, a repudiation of Taiheiki, not for its overall storyline, but for its omission of the deeds of families that had participated in the Ashikaga's rise to power, most notably his own. And last, a criticism of Yoshimitsu, whose maladministration led to Ryōshun's dismissal from the office of tandai. Importantly, his criticism is of Yoshimitsu the individual, not of the Ashikaga family; a large part of Nan Taiheiki is meant to demonstrate Yoshimitsu's unworthiness as a ruler and to cast Ryōshun's participation in the Ōei Disturbance as the act of a loyal follower of the Ashikaga. Accordingly, I show that Nan Taiheiki, which Ryōshun did not even title, has been misinterpreted: its criticism of Taiheiki is but one of several aspects of the text, all of which are tied together by Ryōshun's need to protect his family's legacy and criticize Yoshimitsu, who he considered the architect of his downfall.

[Purpose] As an alternative to manual stretching, the aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using neural/visceral manipulation as a safe and effective intervention to increase neck range of motion of infants with congenital muscular torticollis. [Participants and Methods] Ten 4-month old infants with congenital muscular torticollis received eight sessions of neural/visceral manipulation administered for 30–50 minutes without observed pain. Specific palpation techniques addressed restricted tissue areas of neck, head, trunk and extremities. Neck rotation and lateral flexion were assessed by still photography and a computer program calculating ROM angles before, immediately following, and 4 months post intervention. Motor development and social competence were monitored over time using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale and Bayley-III Social Emotional Scale. [Results] Results of analysis of variances revealed significant improvements in passive and active neck rotation and lateral flexion. Significant increases were also found on the Alberta Infant Motor Scale and Bayley-III Social-Emotional scale. [Conclusion] Neural/visceral manipulation can be used safely in infants with congenital muscular torticollis to improve neck range of motion.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed high intensity neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser on staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacterial growth, which cause many health problems and establish which doses are effective in bacterial inhibition. [Materials and Methods] Five samples of S. aureus and five samples of P. aeruginosa were prepared in the microbiology lab, one used as control sample and the other 4 samples acted as experimental samples. The experimental samples received pulsed high intensity Nd: YAG laser with a total dose of 500, 600, 700 and 800 joules. The primary measures are colony count and the percentage decrease in colony count, the colony count was assessed at baseline and after 24 h of laser application. [Result] There was significant decrease in colony count and the percentage decrease in colony count after pulsed high intensity Nd: YAG laser application in all experimental samples of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa after 24 h of application for all doses (500, 600, 700 and 800 j) as compared with the control sample, with the most effect in higher doses of pulsed high intensity Nd: YAG laser than lower doses in both types of bacteria. [Conclusion] pulsed high intensity Nd: YAG laser was found to be an effective modality for inhibition of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa growth after a single application.

Objectives: To determine the impact of between limb asymmetries in hop performance on change of direction speed (CODS). Design and Methods: Twenty-two multisport collegiate athletes (mean ± SD; age: 21.8 ± 3.4 years, height: 178.1 ± 6.7 cm, mass: 73.5 ± 7.1kg) performed three single and triple horizontal hops for distance per limb, followed by three modified 505 and 90˚cut CODS trials each side to establish imbalances between right and left, and dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) limbs. Limb dominance was defined as the limb that produced the furthest hop or faster CODS performance. Results: Paired sample t-tests revealed no significant differences in hop performance and CODS performance between right and left limbs (p > 0.05, g ≤ 0.11), however, significant differences were observed when comparing D and ND limbs (p < 0.001, g = 0.46-0.61). No significant correlations were observed between hop imbalance and CODS performance (p > 0.05, r ≤ 0.35). Low agreements (32-55%) were demonstrated between like for like identifications of asymmetry for CODS and hop performance. Conclusions: Imbalances in hop and CODS were present; however, greater hop imbalances were not detrimental to CODS. Furthermore, the D limb for hopping did not necessarily correspond to faster performance from that limb during 180˚ turns and 90˚ cuts (plant foot). Collegiate male multi-sport athletes with imbalances within the range reported within this study (≤ 15%) should not experience associated CODS detriments.
