Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) (also termed hypermobility type Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, hEDS) is a heritable connective tissue disorder that is characterized by generalized joint hypermobility, chronic pain, fatigue, and minor skin changes. Initially, it was reported that there is a small subset of patients with JHS/hEDS who have haploinsufficiency of tenascin-X (TNX). However, the relationship between TNXB and JHS/hEDS has not been reported at all afterwards. EDS was reclassified into thirteen types in 2017, and the causative gene of JHS/hEDS remained to be identified. Therefore, in this study in order to determine whether JHS/hEDS can be diagnosed by the concentrations of serum form of TNX (sTNX), we measured the concentrations of sTNX in 17 JHS/hEDS patients. The sTNX concentrations in half of the JHS/hEDS patients were significantly lower than those in healthy individuals. No mutations, insertions or deletions were detected in the TNX exon sequence of the JHS/hEDS patients except for one in patient. That patient has a heterozygous mutation. A correlation between sTNX concentration and mutation of the TNXB genomic sequence was not found in the JHS/hEDS patients. These results indicate that the decrease in sTNX concentration could be used as a risk factor for JHS/hEDS.

The fatty acid composition of lichens and their symbionts was determined. In lichens, linoleic and oleic acids were the most abundant and these acids were also rich in their phyco- and mycobionts. A small amount of arachidonic acid was detected in some of the lichens and their phyco- and mycobionts.

南極氷床上のクレバス帯等の,地上からは到達困難な地域での人工地震観測を目的とした投下型地震観測装置(南極ペネトレータ)を開発し,第43次日本南極地域観測隊で実施する東南極みずほ高原における人工地震探査で使用するために,22本のペネトレータを昭和基地に持ち込んだ.しかし,開発の遅れに伴う国内試験の不足から種々の不具合が発生し,今回は本観測での使用をあきらめざるを得なかった.当初の目的は果たすことができなかったが,国内では得られない環境でのペネトレータ投下実験を行い,投下姿勢,着地衝撃力,温度変化等の貴重なデータを得るとともに,南極内陸部での実際のヘリコプター運用への知見を得ることができた.これらの成果はペネトレータ型地震計の改良のみならず,今後の各種投下型観測機器の開発・製作に多いに役に立つものと考えられる.

Teriparatide, a therapeutic agent for osteoporosis, has been reported to increase the incidences of bone neoplasms such as osteosarcoma when administered subcutaneously to Fischer 344 (F344) rats for a long term, but its non-carcinogenic dose level following 2-year daily administration has not been established. Here we report detailed studies on the carcinogenicity of teriparatide following long-term administration. When teriparatide was administered subcutaneously to male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats daily for 2 years, the incidence of osteosarcoma was increased at 13.6 μg/kg/day. The non-carcinogenic dose level was 4.5 μg/kg/day for both males and females. The development of osteosarcoma in SD rats depends on the dose level of, and treatment duration with, teriparatide. Responses of the bones to teriparatide were similar between F344 and SD rats in many aspects. These results suggested that the carcinogenic potential of teriparatide in SD rats is essentially the same as in F344 rats.

Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a major cause of bovine mastitis, but its pathogenic mechanism remains poorly understood. To evaluate the role of lipoteichoic acid (LTA) in the immune or inflammatory response of SA mastitis, we investigated the gene expression profile in bovine mammary epithelial cells stimulated with LTA alone or with formalin-killed SA (FKSA) using cap analysis of gene expression. Seven common differentially expressed genes related to immune or inflammatory mediators were up-regulated under both LTA and FKSA stimulations. Three of these genes encode chemokines (IL-8, CXCL6 and CCL2) functioning as chemoattractant molecules for neutrophils and macrophages. These results suggest that the initial inflammatory response of SA infection in mammary gland may be related with LTA induced chemokine genes.

To achieve effective prevention and control strategies for COVID-19, regular survey of seroprevalence of antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is essential. Using four serological tests, we examined the residual sera collected in an annual medical checkup of the staff members of the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology in Aichi Prefecture, Central Japan in June 2020. Of the 631 samples, two were positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in at least two tests, showing a seroprevalence of 0.32%. Four subjects showed positive results in only one test. All individuals were asymptomatic and had not been in close contact with patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Multiple antibody tests could be used to assess the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection including individuals without COVID-19 symptoms.
