Aim: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important clinical issue in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The association between pretreatment by statins and the occurrence of AKI in patients with peripheral arterial diseases (PAD) remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the association between statin therapy and the occurrence of AKI in patients with PAD. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from the endovascular treatment (EVT) database in our hospital. A total of 295 patients who underwent angiography and/or intervention for PAD between October 2011 and March 2016 were enrolled and divided into two groups: those without statins (control group; N=157) and those with statins (statin group; N=138) for at least 1 month before admission. We examined the occurrence of AKI and its related factors in these patients. Results: The serum creatinine levels, dose of contrast medium, use of a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor, smoking habit, and blood pressure were similar in both groups. The statin group had more diabetes patients, had patients who were significantly younger, had patients with a higher body mass index (BMI), and had patients with lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than the control group. With regard to the occurrence of AKI, there was a significantly lower incidence in the statin group compared with the control group (5% vs. 16%, p<0.05). The result of the multivariate analysis indicated that statin therapy was significantly correlated with lower occurrence rates of AKI (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our study suggests that statin therapy might prevent the occurrence of AKI after angiography and/or intervention for PAD.

第41次南極地域観測越冬隊(第41次越冬隊)は40名で構成され,全員が昭和基地で越冬し,所期の観測をほぼ実施して2001年3月28日,全員無事帰国した.2000年2月1日,第40次越冬隊より基地運営を引継ぎ,翌2001年2月1日に第42次越冬隊へ引き継ぐまでの間,第V期5カ年計画の4年次にあたる観測・設営活動を実施した.設営活動は,昭和基地整備計画(10カ年計画)の9年次として計画された,夏期隊員宿舎の増設,設備更新を主としたものだった.観測系ではみずほ基地滞在による吹雪観測,航空機による基地上空の大気採集や内陸大気観測等を行い,やまと山脈域での隕石探査では50 kgを超す鉄隕石を含む3554個の隕石を採集した.予想外の出来事としては試験的に持ち込んだ10 kWの風力発電装置が7月初頭の大型ブリザードにより倒壊したほか,12月中旬に発電棟内の燃料タンクから軽油が棟外へ漏れる事故があった.

A new species of free-living marine nematode (Chromadorida: Chromadoridae), Graphonema antarcticum sp. nov., is described. The nematode was found in the shallow water of Kita-no-ura, off Syowa Station in Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica. Graphonema antarcticum sp. nov. is similar to G. metuliferum Kito, 1981 in the ratios of the spicules length to the body diameter at the cloaca, the well-developed gubernaculum with L-shaped lateral pieces bending at an obtuse angle and equipped with minute denticles at the distal end, and the tail length in both sexes. However, G. antarcticum sp. nov. differs from the latter in having a larger body size and presence of the lateral differentiation. The new diagnosis of the genus and the key to the species are provided. Graphonema achaeta Platonova, 1971 was transferred to Endeolophos due to the absence of the lateral pieces of gubernaculum that are present in the genus Graphonema.

南極医学医療研究集会は,わが国の南極医学研究と医療問題についての研究成果を報告・討論し,次期の観測隊における医学研究に寄与することを目的として毎年行われている.2006年の本研究集会は8月26日,国立極地研究所講堂で行われた.27施設から42名が参加し18の演題報告がなされ,近年では最大規模の研究集会となった. 参加者は越冬経験医師をはじめ,共同研究を行っている大学や研究機関の研究者,関連領域の研究を行っている宇宙開発機構やスポーツ科学研究所などの研究者,南極に興味のある一般病院の臨床医など多彩であった. 2004年より昭和基地に導入されたテレビ会議システムを活用して,昭和基地の医師もリアルタイム映像で討論に参加した.また韓国,中国の越冬医師が初めて参加した.これは3カ国の極地研究所による事前の準備と連携により実現した.集会では各国の南極基地の医療状況や医学研究活動が報告され,活発な意見交換がなされた.南極医学医療研究分野におけるアジア連携の端緒となることが期待される.A workshop on Antarctic Medical Research and Medicine 2006 was held at the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) on 26 August, 2006. Forty two participants from 27 institutes attended. The members consist of medical doctors with Antarctic experience, human biologists, research scientists in other fields, logistic staff members of the expedition and also medical doctors interested in Antarctica. The current resident doctor at Syowa Station joined the discussion through a telecommunication system. Doctors with Antarctic experience from China and Korea also participated in the workshop. They gave presentations on their Antarctic activities, followed by an active discussion session. Eighteen presentations were given on various topics, including the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 in medical research, space medicine, telemedicine, an international comparative study of medical operations, psychological surveys, Antarctic high-altitude medicine, Legionella surveillance and nutritional studies.

Background: Colestimide has been reported to lower blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes complicated by hypercholesterolemia. Aim: To examine the mechanism by which colestimide decreases plasma glucose levels in the above patients. Methods: A total of 16 inpatients with type 2 diabetes complicated by hypercholesterolemia received colestimide for 1 week after their plasma glucose levels stabilized. We measured plasma glucose, serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI), serum lipid, plasma glucagon, and plasma glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels. These variables at baseline and 1 week of colestimide administration were compared. Results: Preprandial plasma glucose levels (baseline: 132 ± 33 mg/dL vs. completion: 118 ± 43 mg/dL, P=0.073) tended to decrease after colestimide administration, while 1-hr postprandial plasma glucose levels (baseline: 208 ± 49 mg/dL vs. completion: 166 ± 30 mg/dL, P<0.001) and 2-hr postprandial plasma glucose levels (baseline: 209 ± 56 mg/dL vs. completion: 178 ± 39 mg/dL, P=0.015) decreased significantly at 1 week of colestimide administration. The 2-hr postprandial plasma GLP-1 level was significantly (P=0.015) higher at 1 week of colestimide administration as compared with the baseline level, while there were no significant changes in preprandial and 1-hr postprandial plasma GLP-1 levels. Conclusions: The GLP-1-increasing activity of colestimide may explain, at least in part, the mechanism of its blood glucose-lowering activity in patients with type 2 diabetes complicated by hypercholesterolemia.
