Bone health is an important medical concern in rapidly aging demographics worldwide. Excessive bone resorption, due to enhanced activity of osteoclasts, is a major underlying cause of bone disorders such as osteoporosis. Inflammation and oxidative stress are key factors contributing to increased osteoclastic activity. Like increased activity of osteoclasts, depletion of osteoblasts also contributes to weakened structural integrity of bone. Considering the epidemiology of bone disorders and aging demographics there is a substantial need for novel bone health therapeutics. IRW (Ile-Arg-Trp), an egg-derived tripeptide, exhibits a spectrum of pharmacological activity. In our recent work, we have shown that IRW inhibits osteoclastogenesis and promotes osteogenesis in the mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 and MC3T3-E1 cells. IRW treatment (25 and 50 μM) significantly inhibited osteoclastogenesis-associated factors [TRAF6 (TNF Receptor Associated Factor 6), Fos Proto-Oncogene (c-Fos), Nuclear Factor of Activated T Cells 1 (NFATc1), and cathepsin K] and upregulated osteogenesis-associated factors [RUNX2 (Runt-related transcription factor 2) and RANKL (Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand)] in the two cell lines. Currently, we are conducting studies to analyze the impact of IRW on Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced stress in vitro and in vivo. In summary, our recent work presents the ability of IRW to prevent LPS-induced inflammatory bone resorption and activation of osteogenesis activity via multiple signaling pathways.

We report the determination of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) parameters for In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As quantum wells (QWs) from the analysis of the weak antilocalization effect. We show that the Dresselhaus SOI is mostly negligible in this system and that the intrinsic parameter for the Rashba effect, a_[SO] ≣ 1 α/< Ez >, is given to be a_[SO]m*/m_[e] = (1.46-1.51 x 10^[-17] N_[S] [m^[-2]]) e Å^[2], where α is the Rashba SOI coefficient, < Ez > is the expected electric field within the QW, m*/m_[e] is the electron effective mass ratio, and N_[S] is the sheet carrier density. These values for a_[SO]m* were also confirmed by the observation of beatings in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in our most asymmetric QW sample.

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy is one of the factors affecting the health of offspring. There are conflicting findings about the association between maternal vitamin D status and the development of allergic diseases in offspring. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between maternal vitamin D intake and the development of allergic diseases in offspring at 1 y of age. From an ongoing nationwide birth cohort study (the Japan Environment and Children’s Study), we obtained information on maternal vitamin D intake, determined by a food frequency questionnaire, and parent-reported physician-diagnosed allergic diseases in offspring at 1 y of age. From the full dataset of 103,062 pregnancies, we analyzed complete data for 82,592 mother–offspring pairs. The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma, food allergy, and atopic dermatitis in the children was 2.5%, 6.6%, and 4.3%, respectively. The mean (± standard deviation) maternal vitamin D intake was 4.7±4.7 μg/d, which is much lower than the recommended amount in Japan (7 μg/d). After adjustment for various covariates, the odds ratios were significantly higher for asthma in the 2nd quintile and for food allergies in the 3rd and 4th quintiles compared with the 1st quintile. However, there were no clear associations between maternal vitamin D intake and the development of allergic diseases in offspring at 1 y of age, even in a large nation-wide cohort study. Protective effects of vitamin D supplementation remain unclear.

Confronted by so much unnecessary suffering and destruction around us, scholars have an obligation to contribute to efforts to repair the world. We must then decide what model of a better world should guide these efforts Among the competing models, I focus on democratic socialism—a planned economy under socialized ownership. Large-scale experiments with socialism to date have not been successful in meeting economic and social needs, but nor were they very democratic. I argue that the organizing principles that would undergird a genuinely democratic form of socialism that meets our economic and social needs are emerging in some of our leading corporations. In order to stabilize and generalize this emergent organizational model, these same principles could be applied at the societal level.
