Aim: The purpose of the current work was to review the effects of regular aerobic exercise on serum lipid and lipoprotein levels in East Asians using meta-analysis. Methods: The randomized controlled trials analyzed involved healthy adults who were East Asians with a mean age ≥40 years, an exercise group that only performed regular aerobic exercise, and a control group that did not carry out exercise-related intervention; the trials indicated mean high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), or triglyceride (TG). The mean difference (MD) was defined as the difference (mean value at post-intervention in the exercise group-mean value at baseline in the exercise group)-(mean value at post-intervention in the control group-mean value at baseline in the control group) in HDL-C, LDL-C, TC, and TG and was calculated for each trial. The weighted MD was calculated with a random-effects model. Results: The meta-analysis examined 994 subjects in 25 studies. The weighted MD in HDL-C, TC, and TG improved significantly (HDL-C, 2.2 mg/dL; TC, -5.8 mg/dL; TG, -13.7 mg/dL). The weighted MD in HDL-C and TC contained significant heterogeneity (HDL-C, I2=45.1%; TC, I2=56.2%). When trials were limited to those involving moderate-intensity exercise (55%–69% of the maximum heart rate) or an exercise volume ≥150 min/week, the weighted MD in HDL-C, LDL-C, TC, and TG improved significantly and did not contain significant heterogeneity. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the ideal form of exercise to improve lipid and lipoprotein levels in East Asians is exercise of moderate-intensity and in a volume ≥150 min/week.

Decreases in saliva secretion compromise food mastication and swallowing, reduce mucosal immune function, and increase the risk for oral diseases like dental caries. Chlorella is a green alga that contains a variety of nutrients including amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. In our previous study, Chlorella-derived multicomponent supplementation did not affect salivary flow rates in healthy young individuals, but Chlorella-derived supplementation attenuated a decrease in saliva secretion that was observed during a kendo training camp. Hence, we hypothesized that Chlorella-derived supplementation increases saliva secretion in individuals with lower rates of saliva flow. Sixty-four subjects took Chlorella-derived tablets for four weeks. Before and after supplementation, saliva samples were collected by chewing cotton. In the complete study group, there was no difference in saliva production before and after supplementation (1.91 ± 0.11 ml/min before vs 2.01 ± 0.12 ml/min after). Analysis of subgroups based on saliva production before supplementation found an increase in saliva secretion in the lower saliva flow group (1.18 ± 0.06 vs 1.38 ± 0.08 ml/min), but no change in the higher saliva flow group (2.63 ± 0.11 vs 2.64 ± 0.15 ml/min). These results suggest that Chlorella-derived multicomponent supplementation increases saliva production in individuals with lower levels of saliva secretion.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a phosphaturic hormone secreted by the bone in response to dietary phosphate intake. Since the phosphate content in the diet correlates with the protein content, both plant- and animal-based protein intake can increase the serum FGF23 level. However, a higher percentage of energy from plant protein than from animal protein is associated with a lower serum FGF23 level in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States. Since dietary habits differ between Asian and Western populations, we performed a cross-sectional study to determine the association between the percentages of energy from plant and animal proteins and the serum FGF23 level in Japanese CKD patients. In 107 non-dialysis CKD patients (age: 66 ± 9 years; estimated glomerular filtration rate: 56 ± 21 mL/min/1.73 m2), the percentages of energy from plant and animal proteins were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire based on food groups. Venous blood samples were used to measure the serum FGF23, phosphate, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and intact parathyroid hormone levels. The percentages of energy from plant and animal proteins showed a negative and positive association, respectively, with the serum FGF23 level. Furthermore, isocaloric substitution modeling showed that replacing animal protein with plant protein was associated with a low serum FGF23 level. Our findings suggest that encouraging diets with high plant protein level may prevent an increase in the serum FGF23 level in Japanese CKD patients.

Several studies have demonstrated that athletes show superior performance in general cognitive functions compared to non-athletes. However, the effects on cognitive function might vary depending on the athlete’s sport type. In athletes, the visuospatial working memory is a crucial function for immediate response to each situation and experience. However, no studies have yet examined the association between visuospatial working memory and sport types. This study aimed to investigate whether sport type influences the differences in visuospatial working memory in athletes using a cross-sectional study. A total of 67 young individuals, including 59 athletes (long-distance running, tennis, kendo, and soccer players) and eight non-athletes (controls), participated in the study. Athletes were classified into static, interceptive, or strategic depending on their sport type. The reaction time, accuracy, and balanced integration score (BIS) of the spatial working memory task (SWMT) were examined in all participants. Strategic athletes showed a shorter reaction time and higher BIS value of SWMT than static athletes and non-athletes. We concluded that the visuospatial working memory of strategic athletes was better than that of non-athletes and static athletes. This finding suggests that visuospatial working memory might play an important role in determining athletic performance in strategic sport types, making improved visuospatial working memory a key advantage for strategic athletes.

Circulating xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity may contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity-related adverse cardiometabolic profiles. This pilot study aimed to examine the cross-sectional associations between plasma XOR activity and cardiometabolic risk (CMR) markers in overweight and obese men. In 64 overweight and obese Japanese men (aged 31–63 years), plasma XOR activity and several CMR markers, such as homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and clustered CMR score were measured in each participant. Clustered CMR score was constructed based on waist circumference, triglyceride, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Plasma XOR activity in overweight and obese men was positively associated with the body mass index, waist circumference, visceral fat area, body fat mass, hemoglobin A1c, serum 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, HOMA-IR, and clustered CMR score and was inversely associated with handgrip strength and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Multiple linear regression analysis further demonstrated that the associations of plasma XOR activity with HOMA-IR and the clustered CMR score remained significant after adjustment for covariates including uric acid. Our data demonstrate that circulating XOR activity was independently associated, albeit modestly, with HOMA-IR and the clustered CMR score. These preliminary findings suggest that circulating XOR activity can potentially be one of the preventive targets and biomarkers of cardiometabolic disorders in overweight and obese men.

Obesity has reached global epidemic proportions and is associated with multiple comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease. A novel predictor of cardiovascular disease is elevated central systolic blood pressure. In fact, lifestyle modifications have been shown to decrease the central systolic blood pressure in overweight and obese men. The mechanism underlying these changes has yet to be fully elucidated. Interestingly, testosterone has been found to have cardioprotective effects. Moreover, serum testosterone levels are lower in obese men than in normal weight men. However, it is still unclear whether testosterone participates in the decrease of central blood pressure in overweight and obese men following lifestyle modifications. So, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of testosterone on central systolic blood pressure in overweight and obese men before and after the 12-week lifestyle modification program. Forty-four overweight and obese men completed a 12-week lifestyle modification program (aerobic exercise training and dietary modifications). For all participants, central systolic blood pressure and serum testosterone levels were measured before and after the program. After the program, central systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased while serum total testosterone levels were significantly increased in overweight and obese men. Moreover, we also found a significant negative relationship between the change in serum testosterone levels and that in central systolic blood pressure. The present study suggests that increased serum testosterone levels likely contribute to a decrease in central blood pressure in overweight and obese men.
