In order to prove sodium toxicity of MSG, baby chicks known to be the most susceptible one to sodium chloride were chosen as the experimental animal. Almost isotonic solution of MSG, NaCl or monopotassium glutamate was given ad libitum as the sole source of drinking water. Two-day old chickens given MSG died of gout within a few days and showed higher mortality and lesions severer than those given physiological saline, while none died nor was weakened among those receiving monopotassium glutamate. Very rapid development of kidney lesions and a large amount of urate deposits were the two main features resulting from MSG ingestion, and primary histological changes were tubular degeneration and tophi obstruction in collecting ducts. Even at half concentration, MSG ingestion caused lobar atrophy in the kidney and some died of gout. Besides sodium toxicity, glutamate counterpart is suspected of contributing to uric acid synthesis.

Since periodical survey of the sewage entering the sewage-farm in Matsuyama City revealed a high incidence of Salmonella typhi of different phage types, attempts were made to trace the upstream reservoir. It was found that S. typhi was drained into a particular manhole at a distance of about 5 km from the sewage-farm. Two members of two families were found to be carriers. Further investigation detected other 25 carriers. The 27 carriers were all pupils of the same primary school. Ten of them showed mild symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea; the remaining 17 were asymptomatic. The phage type of 24 isolates was of Vi degraded approaching phage type A [degraded Vi (A) ] and that of the other three was of type 53. The results coincided with those of the isolates from sewage.

Effort has been made to purify Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus from suckling mouse brains infected with the Nakayama strain. The brain contains so many extractable contaminating materials that purification of the virus from brain suspension by mere repetition of fractional centrifugation has been difficult (Kitaoka, 1955) . Recently, Nojima et al. (1964) reported a purification procedure of JE virus from infected suckling mouse brains by adsorption technique on hydroxyapatite column. The recent progress of sedimentation techniques has opend a simple and efficient way for purification of many animal viruses from infected tissues and tissue culture cells. The present paper will describe in detail the purification procedure of JE virus from infected suckling mouse brains by the protamine treatment, fractional centrifugation and sucrose gradient centrifugation. Also the structure of virus particles will be discussed in regard to hemagglutinating (HA) and complement fixing (CF) substances and infectious principle.

The antitumor activity of a water-soluble polysaccharide (KGF-C), isolated from the Kefir grain, was studied in the mice subcutaneously inoculated with Ehrich carcinoma (EC) or Sarcoma 180 (S-180) . The growth of EC and S-180 solid tumor was inhibited by 40-59% and 21-81%, respectively, by oral administration of KGF-C as compared with the unadministered mice. The tumor growth was similarly inhibited by intraperitoneal administration. The mechanism of the antitumor activity of KGF-C was considered to be host-mediated because of the lack of direct in vitro effect on tumor cells.

Piperine (1-peperoyl piperidine) was isolated from Piper nigrum Linn for the evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity in rats. Different acute and chronic experimental models like carrageenin-induced rat paw edema, cotton pellet granuloma, and croton oil-induced granuloma pouch, were employed. Simultaneously, biochemical estimations were made to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the action. Piperine acted significantly on early acute changes in inflammatory processes and chronic granulative changes. It also acted partially through stimulation of pituitary adrenal axis. Exudative changes in both acute and chronic models, however, were insignificant.

Intracerebral injection of vaccine into the mouse induced swelling of the brain. The swelling reached the maximum in the intensity by day 1 and persisted for several days. A method for quantitative determination of the brain-swelling activity of the vaccine was developed. A positive regression coefficient was found only between the brain-swelling and the lymphocytosis-promoting activities. Such activity was no longer shown with the vaccine heat-treated for 30 min at 80 C, but it was restored upon addition of the lymphocytosis-promoting factor (LPF) that caused no brain swelling by itself. The activity, therefore, was ascribed to cooperation of LPF and a certain heat-stable component other than endotoxin contained by pertussis vaccine.
