The plant pulp consists of a cellulose nanofiber or a cellulose microfibril bundle. Since nanofibers are bundles of semi-crystalline extended cellulose chains, their thermal expansion is as low as that of quartz whilst their strength is five times that of steel. Recently, due to the risk of depletion of oil reserves and global environmental concern, the extraction of cellulose nanofibers and their utilizations has gained increasing attention. This review summarizes the research works on the production of nanofibers from plant resources and their application in polymer composites.

This article gives an overview of the fundamentals of polymeric materials for vibration damping. Based on vibration transmissibility of single degree of freedom systems, the differences between vibration isolation and vibration damping are described. Mechanism and materials design of the vibration damping materials are outlined with viscoelastic properties and those structures. As an example of controlling loss factor in viscoelastic properties, the formulations of EPDM with carbon black are described.

Rubber gloves are the indispensable items in our life. They protect our hand from an injury, a medicine wound, a virus and bacteria. Over the past years, there has been a notable rise in the demand of gloves whenever there is an outbreak of flu or viral diseases. During and after such outbreaks, there is a sudden change in the demand for rubber gloves due to increased hygiene concerns. In addition, the demand for gloves from food industry and others services is also set to increase. This report gives a production method and the market trend of rubber gloves.

Latex allergy (LA) is the allergic reaction triggered by proteins containing in natural rubber latex (NRL) or chemicals in NRL products. The pathophysiology of LA is divided into the immediate type (type I) allergy and the delayed type (type IV) allergy. Majority of LA is the allergic reactions mediated by specific IgE (sIgE) antibodies produced by contacts and exposures to NRL by inhaling the powder in the environments when wearing or removing the gloves made from NRL. Recently, the frequency of immediate type allergy reaction is decreasing, but the delayed type allergy reaction caused by chemical substances added during glove manufacturing is increasing. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by thiuram compound (a vulcanization accelerator), is increasing and it is clear that 80% of ACD cases in health care workers are sensitized to this substance. For Diagnosis of LA, a detailed patient interview is the most important and sensitization to NRL is confirmed by a blood test or skin test to show an existence of sIgE antibodies to NRL. Also a positive provocation is useful for diagnosis. Treatment for type I reactions is histamine H1 receptor antagonist or systemic steroids. However, in severe case such as anaphylactic shock, it is necessary to administer adrenaline. In case of type IV reactions, it is important to take local steroids or use moisturizing agents in addition to replace gloves free of vulcanization accelerator.

This article reviews the outline, manufacturing method, producers and properties of PUR (Polyurethane elastomers). PUR is a kind of multi-block copolymer composed of soft segment reacted with long chain polyol and polyisocyanate and hard segment reacted with polyisocyanate and short chain polyol. PUR is mainly divided into TSU (Thermosetting polyurethane elastomers) and TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers) which has accounted for about 90% of world-wide PUR market. In particular, AAGR (Annual average growth ratio) and the market volume of TPU are expected to reach about 5-7% and 540 thousands ton towards 2018, respectively. TPUs have been manufactured in bulk by batch and continuous polymerization method as the form of pellets for injection, extrusion, blow and calendar processes and also in water or organic solvent by suspension polymerization as the form of particles with mean average diameter size of about 150 micrometer for slush molding process. Most of TPUs and TSUs are applied to various markets such as mobility parts, medical, healthcare, fiber, packages, roll, electronics and industrial parts and so on. Recently, PUR based on a new specialty diisocyanate which satisfies elasticity, heat resistance and light stability are developed for specific application.
