This paper describes an analysis of the effects of transient electromagnetic fields on the growth of a plant. In our experiment, a single transient electromagnetic field, which was radiated from a discharge electrode (2 cm) of a discharge generator, was periodically applied to seeds and seedlings of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var italica) for three weeks. The pulse application cycles were set to 1 day and 3 days with charging voltages of 10 kV and 15 kV. In a growth environment, temperature and humidity were set to 25 (±3) °C and 50 (±10) %, respectively. Light photon at the top of leaf was set to 110 (±30) µmol/m2s and illuminating lamp lighted for 24 hours. Then, we measured the length and chlorophyll density of leaves of the growing plants in each condition. Also, based on measured current that flowed through the discharge electrode, we evaluated the radiated electromagnetic energy level by using an electric dipole model. As a result, we found that samples, which had been applied 10kV/3days and 15kV/3days, became greater than the others by around 30%. Also, the chlorophyll density of 10kV/3days and 15kV/3days became higher than the others.

Fe oxide-coated TiO<sub>2</sub> particles for UV protection cosmetics were produced by means of atmospheric pressure glow discharge using IAA(Iron acethyl acetonato). The particles were also coated by a silica protection layer. To examine the UV catalytic ability of Fe oxide -coated TiO<sub>2</sub>, we measured a squalene that contained the powders by GCMS for the gas products after the squalene had been irradiated by a Xe lamp for one hour. Using silica-coated TiO<sub>2</sub> that was coated by Fe oxide, we find almost no signals from any harmful organic oxides in the GC-MS spectra of the UV irradiated squalene. The multi- coated powder shows very fine and flesh like-color with pearl-like glowing.

The effects of tensile stress and strain on magnetization and magnetic domains in silicon steel sheets were investigated. The magnetization of elastic deformation regions decreased with increase of strain and the strain-magnetization properties of plastic deformation regions under stress showed peculiar characteristics. The magnetization increased with decreasing strain. We observed Lancet and other domains in a sample, especially around the boundary of crystal, after removing stress applied to a plastic deformation region. This phenomenon can be explained by changes in the domain structures, which were partly observed. This results obtained in this investigation can be applied to the nondestructive detection of fatigue in metallic magnetic materials.

The history of circuit breaker development is reviewed and it must be emphasized that early stage of electricity application, there was no circuit breaker technology at all. The amount of electric power consumption was increased and gradually the circuit breaker concept was developed. At first the oil circuit breaker is developed in Europe and the air circuit breaker and the vacuum circuit breaker were developed. Finally the SF6 gas circuit breaker are developed together with the gas insulated switchgear. It is also written that by reviewing the history, one can easily point out the present problem judging from the tendency of general picture.

In this paper, we studied the resistance lattice circuits in two and three dimensions. The exact voltage distribu-tions on these circuit are obtained based on the Modified Bessel function. The combined resistance and asymptotic property of these circuits are formulated. Moreover another exact solution under the boundary condition of Kro-necker's delta is constructed.

A newly found phenomenon, in which the electric resistivity in a highly purified water gradually decreases through hours and days after application of a milli-gauss ac magnetic field in a short time, its mechanism model, and its wide application for various positive biological effects are summarized. A theoretical model for the mechanism based on the cyclotron resonance with the frequency f=qBdc/2πm for each hydro-molecular cluster with the proton charge q and the cluster mass m of H3O+(H2O)n under the terrestrial field Bdc well explains the gradual decreasing ratio of the resistivity for each cyclotron frequency forming a long range order proton transport path. The high temperature stability of a magnetized water resistivity may reflect the homeostasis. The phagocytic activity of neutrophils is remarkably elevated in a magnetized phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. The milli-gauss, ULF magnetic field applied water will be a basic medium for the magneto-protonics.

It is highly important to clarify the basic characteristics of plasmas produced by laser focusing for investigating the possibility of laser-induced lightning. This paper reports the electron density, electron temperature and neutral particle density in laserinduced plasmas measured by Thomson and Rayleigh scattering techniques. The electron temperature increases to 2.5eV in maximum in 3 to 3.5μs after firing the laser, and then gradually decreases in several tens of microseconds. The Rayleigh scattering measurement has shown that the rarefied air region of lower neutral particle density takes a spherical shell profile in later stages after the laser firing. This has been also confirmed by the induced discharge paths through the circumference of a plasma after 500μs.

In this work, the effect of discharge condition on the NOx reduction performances by a superimposing barrier discharge plasma reactor is experimentally investigated. The superimposing barrier discharge plasma reactor consists of double coaxial cylinders. The outer tube is made of Pyrex glass with aluminum foil electrode which is the outer electrode. The inner tube is a glass one filled with NaCl solution which is the central electrode, and nickel wire electrode wound on the surface of central electrode is the inner electrode. Amplified AC high voltage is applied to the outer electrode and central electrode, and the inner electrode was used as a common ground. A superimposing discharge is generated by surface or silent discharge of 50Hz and changeable frequency. Experimental investigation has been conducted to reduce NO concentration by two kinds of single discharges operating mode and three kinds of superimposed barrier discharge on the changeable frequency.The results show that the reduction rate of NO at superimposed barrier discharge is higher than that of a single discharge at the same applied voltage. At the range of low discharge power, the highest reduction rate is obtained by silent discharge mode. However, the discharge power is more, the highest reduction rate is obtained by surface discharge mode.

Railguns are facilities to accelerate projectiles up to several km/s by the electromagnetic force due to a driving current. A variety of current waveforms are used for railguns developed in the world This paper describes the dependence of a railgun operation on a rising rate of the driving current. The use of the exploding wire as an opening switch enables to change the rise time of the driving current. A secondary arc is likely to appear and the erosion on a rail surface is more severe when the current with a short rise time is used. According to the non-dimensional railgun plasma simulation, the current with a short rise time heats up the plasma so fast that plenty of particles ablated from the bore surface, which seem to be the cause of the secondary arc, increase rapidly in the early phase of acceleration.

Study of laser triggered lightning has been conducted at field experiments. The experimental site was constructed at Mt. Dake close to the Japan sea shore in Fukui prefecture. An electron-beam sustained two-beam 1kJ CO2 laser, 500 and 1000-mm diameter Cassegrain type focusing mirrors and a 50-m tall lightning tower were prepared. To produce a plasma channel for leader initiation, a plastic target was set at the top of the lightning tower and irradiated by the CO2 laser. An aerosol plasma channel was also produced from the top of the plastic target. The laser plasma channel successfully triggered a lightning stroke. Rogowski coil current detectors monitored the current growing rapidly and UHF interferometer set on Goichi observation site was detected an UHF radiation from Mt. Dake as same timing as the laser irradiating. The UHF radiation was correlated to the leader initiation both in time and space. Hence, we confirmed the laser triggered lightning.

Recent innovative research and development of high performance thermoelectric materials for power generation in the temperature range from room temperature up to 1300K has been investigated. The concept of guiding principle for the enhancement of thermoelectric performance was briefly summarized including PGEC materials and independent control of the structure and function. In this paper as some of the promising materials, modified Bi-Te system, (filled) Skutterudites, clathrates and layered oxides were discussed.
