1957月12月19日の大阪の大阪市会の決算委員会の席上で寺西議員は中井市長に「都市の騒音防止条例をつくる意志あるか」と質問しているのに対して, 中井市長は「騒音防止も外国の都市では道路が整備され, 乗物の種類が大阪は複雑でないから静かにできるので大阪では困難だとの考えもあるが, 私は大阪でもできると思う。しかしこれは取締警察と取締られる運輸関係者などの声をよくきいた上で結論を出したい。」と答えている。(昭和32年12月20日大朝日新聞)。現在までに騒音防止条例を制定している都市は12市, 1県に及んでいる。大阪市の騒音はどのようなもか, 又何故大阪では騒音防止条例の制定がこのように遅れているのであろろうか。

Giardia intestinalis is a protozoan parasite found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Recent molecular studies show considerable genetic diversity among isolates from humans and animals, suggesting that this species is not a single species but is composed of multiple genotypes that have zoonotic potential or are host-adapted. Cross-infection studies using the isolates from different hosts and molecular epidemiological studies in endemic areas strongly support the zoonotic transmission of G. intestinalis. Molecular analysis of the isolates is therefore essential in order to reveal the sources of Giardia infection and thus develop appropriate countermeasures. In Japan, the molecular epidemiology of Giardia infection is as yet unclear as only a few isolates from humans and animals have been genotyped. This report finds that further studies are required for an understanding of the zoonotic significance and molecular epidemiology of Giardia infection in Japan.

In recent years, computer hardware has become more powerful and more popularized. Software for specialized data processing, such as statistical analysis, is also becoming common as a result of the open-source movement. These changes have made some novel statistical techniques more accessible. Typical examples are the randomized test and the Monte Carlo method, which are now used frequently by some skilled researchers. Among average users, however, the use of such techniques is not common. In the present paper, I present these techniques and the R codes necessary to estimate parameter distribution with the Monte Carlo method.

The fungal flora in the house dust of dwellings was examined in both the winter and summer of 2006. The xerophilic fungi, Aspergillus restrictus and Wallemia, which grow in house dust, were markedly abundant as well as Cladosporium and Penicillium. The average numbers of fungi detected were larger in tatami dust than in carpet dust or in flooring dust. Floor materials, for example whether the carpet was wool or synthetic, affected the fungal contamination of house dust. Fungal contamination was found to be less on upper floors, in houses located on flat land than on the first floor or on sloping land. More fungal contamination was detected in older dwellings of 26 years or more than in newer ones of 25 years or less. The fungal count in the house dust of rooms with daily use of air-conditioning in summer and heating in winter was about half of that in rooms rarely heated or air-conditioned. Factors removing moisture from the room atmosphere and floor were thought to reduce the fungal contamination of house dust.

In June 2005, media coverage of the health effects of asbestos used at factories on nearby residents developed into an “asbestos panic” in Japan. Asbestos is a natural mineral fiber and is widely used as a material for industrial and construction purposes because of its significant tensile strength, heat resistance and thermal insulating properties. Japan′s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has proposed a new regulation for the prevention of asbestos scattering due to building demolition. Here, we provide a brief overview of asbestos from the viewpoints of present and future problems.

化学的合成品以外の食品添加物31種36品目についてマウスおよびラットにおける急性経口毒性試験を実施し、以下の結果を得た。1) 投与量が5.0g/kg以下の用量で動物の死亡が認められた試料はパルマローザ、ボアドローズ、茶抽出物、キラヤ抽出物、ヒノキチオールの5品目であった。これらのうちキラヤ抽出物およびヒノキチオールのLD50値はいずれも2.0g/kg以下であった。2) キラヤ抽出物を経口投与したマウスでは腺胃および小腸粘膜に浮腫、出血がみられた。3) ヒノキチオールを経口投与したマウスでは間代性および強直性痙攣がみられた。4) 上記以外の試料では動物の死亡は認められなかったが、観察期間終了の剖検ではクチナシ黄色素投与による肝臓の肉眼的変化が観察された。

As food apparatus, containers and packages are necessary in daily life, they must not contain harmful chemicals that could migrate to food. Investigations are necessary in this respect to confirm their safety. This review introduces recent problems and topics relating to the hygiene of food apparatus, containers and packages. The topics are as follows: di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate from polyvinyl chloride products, bisphenol A from polycarbonate and epoxy resin products, epoxidized soybean oil and semicarbazide from bottle cap sealing agents for infants, PFOA from fluoroplastics and the fluorine coatings, lactic acid from polylactide, and abietic acids from paper products.

To test the idea that concentration of air pollutants such as NOx, CO and SPM is significantly increased in enclosed spaces frequented by automobiles, an investigation of air pollution at a 52-space underground parking lot was carried out. Average concentrations of NO2, NO, CO, SPM and HCHO were 103ppb, 221ppb, 8.7ppm, 20.7μg/m3 and 18.0ppb respectively. Concentrations of NOx and CO were significantly higher than outdoors. Correlation between NOx and CO concentrations and the number of parking cars was not high, because the automobile sources of the pollutants were immediately present.
