Servo drive motor systems using PWM inverters have become very popular in the industrial market owing to their excellent control over torque, speed and position. Recently, problems of EMI noise and complexity of wiring from 3-phase PWM inverter power line cables have become critical issues in factories. In addition, using the regenerative energy of a motor has become important. A DC bus system can be a solution to these problems and demands. However, the DC bus system for servo drives has a risk of system instability because of interference between the DC bus and the servo drives. In this paper, an impedance-based stability analysis method is proposed that can predict the stability by only using the I/O (impedance) characteristics instead of all the system properties. The experimental results show that this method is useful.

This paper presents a bidirectional converter with multi-stage FETs featuring voltage balance control function using variable capacitors. The proposed converter is constructed using low-voltage Si-FETs in a series connection, and it improves the voltage balance between the drain-source voltages of the series connected FETs in the OFF period. Using the converter figure of merit (FOM), which can estimate the converter losses from the specifications of the FETs, the effectiveness of the proposed converter is compared to that of a converter using SiC-FETs. The factors of the voltage unbalance are analytically clarified using the equivalent circuit. The principle of voltage balance control function using the variable capacitor is discussed. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can achieve a maximum power conversion efficiency of 99.2%.

The output power of solar panels may decrease by degradation due to long-term usage and surface contamination. Methods to detect these problems are necessary for photovoltaic generation to be more widespread. AC impedance methods are used for electrochemical devices to inspect the inside situation of solar panels. In this study, we applied an ac impedance method to solar panels, which have some merits compared with the traditional methods. We added a small ac signal to the duty of a dc-dc converter to implement the ac impedance method. The small ac signal was a white noise generated by a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) such that many frequency points can be measured simultaneously. Unlike traditional methods, this method can examine the solar panels when they are generating power. We measured shaded and nonshaded solar panel impedances and compared with the experimental results. From the results, we can show the potential to distinguish the shaded panel or the unshaded panel based on the difference of the impedance characteristics.

This paper proposes a real-time image processing system for wheelchair recognition at elevator lobby. This system extracts objects with frame difference method. From the image of extracted objects, heads of people are detected by the Hough transform. Vertical shooting from ceiling improves the performance of people counting since the detected head has high roundness and occlusion of people is prevented. Two feature quantities are introduced to recognize wheelchairs. They are the area value and the ratio of traveling length to vertical length. Since these quantities require a method for drawing the contour line. This paper proposes a new simple method to draw a contour line. The effectiveness of this system is confirmed through experiments.

Signal processing based on frequency polarity has been attracting wide attentions due to its potential industrial-applications. It is popular to employ two vector-rotators for such signal processing. But, It was very recently reported that equivalent signal processing effect can be attained in a much simpler manner using two-input two-output filters in the D-module. This paper further investigates a class of characteristic-varying systems in the D-module, which contains the filters in the D-module as a special case, and gives new analytical results on their properties from viewpoints of existence, realization and stability. If the results are applied to filter problems, n-th order D-module filters in new forms can be easily and directly obtained, whose stability and response equivalent to the associated filters with vector-rotators are guaranteed. If the results are applied to AC motor modeling problems, dynamic models and block diagrams of AC motors in general reference frame are easily and directly obtained. Very general and useful analyses are given for newly proposed a class of characteristic-varying systems in the D-module that have potential usefulness in various industrial applications including control of magnetic bearing system, analyses and active compensations of power systems, and sensorless drives of AC motors.

The resonant DC link invertors have been developed these years for avoiding the switching loss of the conventional multi-pulse PWM invertors. This paper proposes a three phase VVVF power invertor using resonant pulse density modulation for induction motor speed-control. The invertor is composed of a cascade connection of a resonant DC-DC convertor and a multi-pulse PWM invertor. The output waveform depends on the gate pulse patterns of the invertor valves. This paper proposes three kinds of pulse patterns for obtaining the outputs of trapezoidal waveform and of sinusoidal waveform, and describes also the experimental results. The V/f characteristics for induction motor speed-control and the regenerative braking operation will be examined and the circuit behaviors will be discussed.

In the conventional bus voltage controller, the concentration of heat generation in a specified circuit has been an obstacle to miniaturization. In this paper, we describe the control algorithm and the experimental result of the direct and distributed switching control (DDSC) method devised to disperse the generation of heat. Additionally, to improve the transient response while reducing the steady state switching frequency, which can reduce the generation of heat, we investigated the application of a transient mode that temporarily speeds up the control cycle when load fluctuation is detected. We also report the calculation of the heat reduction effect that can be achieved by combining these methods.

This paper presents a new vector control for induction motor drives in full block mode, so called One-Pulse mode, of inverters. For traction drives the inverter usually operates in this mode in a high speed region. The amplitude of voltage vector is restricted constant in the mode. The conventional vector control is not applicable as it requires controllability of both the amplitude and the phase of the voltage vector for all time. The proposed scheme provides quick torque response even in the One-Pulse mode. Experimental results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the control.

This paper describes a new discrete-time PMSM model for the discrete design of current vector control systems. The discrete design of current control system minimizes the discretization error and improves the current control performance at the sampling point. The conventional PMSM model discretization method presumes that park transformation runs continuously. When the sampling frequency is considerably lower than the fundamental electric frequency, this assumption is invalid and the control performance will degrade due to modeling error. In this paper, the authors propose a method of PMSM model discretization considering discrete-time park transformation and design an additional cross-coupling compensator for the proposed model. The experimetntation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Various studies have been conducted on photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems that focus either on a generation control circuit (GCC) to prevent power reduction due to a partial shade or on an active power decoupling method (APD) to reduce the power pulsation with twice the utility frequency. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, only few studies have examined the PV power generation systems in which both the GCC and the APD functions are installed. In this paper, a novel PV power generation system equipped with both the GCC and the APD functions is proposed, and its fundamental operation is verified.

This letter proposes a single-phase full-bridge inverter with a capacitor embedded in a bus bar. In order to reduce the switching ripple flowing in the electrolytic capacitor, the proposed structure embeds a barium titanate (BaTiO3) ceramic capacitor in the bus bar. The experimental results verified the operation of the inverter circuit, rated 300V, 4.1A with a switching frequency of 100kHz.
