Suppression of slip and reduction of friction between the rail and the wheel are important in railway systems. This paper proposes a novel slip re-adhesion control based on monitoring the excessive torque and the excessive angular momentum for four-axle and two-truck model. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed by mathematical analysis. In addition, the excessive angular momentum compensation of the proposed method was evaluated using real-world train test data. Furthermore, the proposed method can estimate the disturbance torque from real-world train test data.

This paper presents a novel methodology of magnet temperature estimation using a magnet flux linkage observer for a Variable Leakage Flux Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous M (VLF-IPMSM), whose parameters vary depending on load current conditions. The magnet temperature estimation algorithm consists of a Gopinath-Style flux observer, magnet flux linkage observer, and magnet temperature estimator based on the look-up table. The estimation accuracy is evaluated on d-q current plane by using both a behavior model of JMAG-RT and a control model of MATLAB Simulink. Then it is shown that the proposed methodology can be applied to a VLF-IPMSM for magnet temperature estimation.

This paper presents the design studies of a multi-layer interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with a radially oriented arc-shaped hot-deformed magnet for automotive traction drives. Specifically, by using the IPMSM on a 2010 Prius as a benchmark, we designed an IPM rotor geometry that simultaneously achieves a 20% improvement in both the maximum power and constant output power line with high efficiency while maintaining maximum torque. A prototype of the designed three-layer IPMSM was manufactured and evaluated. The results of the tests conducted on the prototype are reported and discussed in this paper.

This paper considers the improvement of the demagnetization resistance of concentrated winding IPMSMs under high temperature environments by arranging magnets with different magnetic field orientations. The obliquely oriented magnetized magnets to which Halbach array is applied are arranged on the end face of the rotor, thus improving both the magnetic flux density and demagnetization resistance.

A lot of researches on chaos have been made. However, most of them are just investigation using computer simulation, and researches on actual chaotic system is very few. It is well known that double pendulum is a representative chaotic system. This paper deals with an actual handmade double pendulum and stabilize its chaotic motion by the extended OGY method, which we propose. First, by using reconstructed attractor which is a state space to express chaotic time series, the motion of the pendulum is analyzed. Next, the proposed new control method is applied and proved that very small control input can stabilize the system. Finally, it is compared to the disturbance observer method, and shows the superiority of the proposed control method.

This paper proposes a new torque-sensorless ripple-reduction torque control method for synchronous reluctance motors, which evolve torque ripples depending on the rotor position by the sinusoidal stator current. The proposed method, which requests the construction of a vector control system with a special command converter, has the following attractive features. (a) The average evolved torque matches its torque command. (b) The torque ripple can be considerably reduced. (c) The current command generated from the torque command is on the trajectory for efficient drives. (d) It is analytical and simple. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through extensive simulations.

This paper presents a new type of axial gap motor, called the flux-modulating hybrid field motor (FHM). For flux modulation, the FHM has rotor iron pieces sandwiched between two stators, the armature and field poles. The field poles comprise permanent magnets and electromagnets, and the magnetic flux of the electromagnets can be adjusted by changing the field current. To validate the principle of this FHM, a 0.8-kW prototype machine was fabricated, and the basic characteristics of the prototype machine were investigated through experiments and three-dimensional finite element analysis. The results show that the torque can be varied in a wider range by changing the armature current vector and field current.

We must switch from trucking to trains or ships for freight transportation in view of aggravating environ-ment destruction, depletion of fossil energy resources, and shortage of young manpower.High power electric locomotives have been developed and are contributing an increased freight transporting capacity. But we have to restrict their power output because of voltage drop and shortage of capacity on account of long interval of traction substations. We have studied an adaptive output power control system of them to exploit their full ability with computer simulation. We propose a new method of calculating the difference between the voltage of contact wire of locomotives and its limit, and the resistance of feeding system with the position of the locomotive and traction substation, and calculating the current to be increased within the limit. Otherwise we propose to reduce output power of locomotives according to the difference between voltage of contact wire and its limit. We show that high power locomotives can be worked within the voltage limit and the standard train running time can be maintained by computer simulation proposed in the above. Thus we can introduce the high power locomotives without any large investment to expand the existing substation and can work them to the limit of their capacity.

This paper proposes a linear PFC regulator with a light flicker compensating circuit for LED lighting applications. The proposed circuit is small in size because it includes no reactors or electrolytic capacitors. The light flicker compensating circuit, which is connected in parallel to the LED string, consists of four ceramic capacitors and diodes. These capacitors are operated in series in the charge state and in parallel in the discharge state by using a diode network circuit. Therefore, an external controller and large capacitors are not required. The proposed circuit is experimentally validated using a 9W prototype. From the experimental results, it is found that the power fluctuation of the LED string is less than the JIS and JLMA limitations, and the power factor is 0.95. In addition, the power loss is analyzed at an efficiency of 89.4% for the prototype circuit. Also, by modulating the current regulator, sinusoidal input current can be achieved. The second proposed circuit is experimentally validated using a 7.5W prototype, and the power factor and input current distortion are found to be 0.999 and 2.1%, respectively.

A new current control method based on the internal model principle in control theory is proposed. It uses a sinusoidal internal model, but it does not use any coordinate transformations. The method can be used for tracking an arbitrary number of harmonics, a DC component or a fundamental frequency component signal. It is applied to a single-phase PWM inverter and an active filter. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.

We have developed novel mathematical models of d-axis and q-axis magnetic fluxes ϕd and ϕq for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The models can be used to approximate magnetic characteristics using simple fractional equations with id and iq as variables. They include eight constants, and some of them represent the degree of magnetic saturation and cross-coupling. However, the magnetic characteristics are varied with the temperature rise in PMSMs, which are dependent on the load torque and motor speed. In this paper, the characteristics of the eight constants that vary with the motor temperature and the residual flux density Br are shown. Further, we propose to extend the mathematical models by considering the temperature and Br variation.

Induction motor drive with PWM inverter control, which can reduce the weight of the driving devices, is used for Shinkansen trains in order to achieve high speed transportation.This paper describes the experimental results for controlling wheel slip and re-adhesion at high speed running with the type 953 Shinkansen test train. The induction motor for each axle of this train is individually controlled by an independent PWM inverter. By introducing the vector control for the induction motor drive system, quick response for the motor torque can be achieved when wheels are going to slip. The control scheme for the wheel slip and re-adhesion is that the motor torque is gradually reduced by increasing of wheel slip speed.The results show, it is possible to recover to adhesive condition against wheel slip, without excessive motor torque reduction, when the reducing torque value and control time constant are properly selected.By these tests, re-adhesion characteristics improvement by induction motor vector control are obtained. To the next step, the parallel motor control system with a vector controlled inverter will be investigated.

A control system which improves playability of optical disk drives is proposed. The system estimates the state variables such as a sensor-less disturbance observer and feeds them back to the controller. This approach improved control performance toward the defects on the optical disk by the feedback control of the estimated velocity. Furthermore, the influence of an acceleration disturbance to act on the drive and the influence of acceleration caused by physical distortion of the optical disk are suppressed by the feedback control of the estimated disturbance. It is proved that, by applying this control system to the tracking servo system of CD players, the control errors against the acceleration disturbance and the radial run-out of the disk were eliminated and that, as a result, abnormal sound skips never occurred on the defective disks. This control system is one of the key technology toward the realization of the high density optical disk drives.

In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous hidden layer consisting of both sigmoid functions and RBFs (Radial Basis Functions) in multi-layered neural networks and present a method for implementing the neural network to control systems. Focusing on the orthogonal relationship between the sigmoid function and its derivative, a derived RBF that is a derivative of the sigmoid function is used as the RBF in the neural network, so the proposed neural network is called an ONN (Orthogonal Neural Network) and the function mapping with the ONN can be treated as a kind of an orthogonal function series model. Identification results using a nonlinear function confirm both the ONN's feasibility and characteristics by comparing with those obtained using a conventional neural network which has sigmoid function or RBF in hidden layer. Using the ONN, a parallel type neural controller, which uses both the ONN output and the conventional control output as an objective system control input, is proposed. Simulation results for discrete-time nonlinear SISO system demonstrate the applicability of the neural controller for controlling nonlinear systems and experimental results for controlling angular velocity of a DC servo motor demonstrate its usefulness for controlling practical systems.

It is an important factor for railway services to take proper train rescheduling under disrupted conditions. This paper discusses the rescheduling problem in the case of resumption of train operation, in which the train operation has been temporarily suspended by an accident. The authors propose a novel rescheduling method using selective stops schedule pattern. The proposed rescheduling problem has been formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem, and it has been solved by the simulated annealing method. Finally, the proposed methods are applied to a typical commuter line, and the efficiency of these methods has been verified through simulations.

At substations of Shinkansen, three-phase power received from the utility power system is converted into a pair of single phase power sources with different phases. When a Shinkansen car passes the boundary of two power sources with different phases, the power source for Shinkansen instantly switches from one to the other. Vacuum switches have been used as changeover switches so far. It takes about 300 msec for switching. By this system, Shinkansen cars can pass the boundary of two power sources under powering.Generally speaking, when a vacuum switch is closed at a voltage-phase of 90°, the inrush current into transformer will become small. On the other hand, although the power from substation is not supplied to Shinkansen at no-voltage of power source switching at the changeover section, counter electromotive force by auxiliary motor appears on the main transformer on the car. Due to the counter electromotive force, it is difficult to suppress the inrush current into the main transformer by the conventional vacuum switch. In contrast, the use of static switch such as semiconductor device can decrease the exciting inrush current into the transformer of Shinkansen car, when the turn-on timing of changeover switch is controlled. We investigated the control method for suppressing the exciting inrush current into transformer when a static switch is used as a changeover switch instead of vacuum switch. To verify the control method, we built and tested a mini model to simulate a changeover switch.
