This paper proposes a new field-weakening control considering voltage saturation for vector controlled induction motor. The proposed method improves the output torque characteristics in the field-weakening region. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by the experimental results.

Although general-purpose inverters have been used for variable speeds driving of AC motors, these are only for induction motor (IM) driving. Synchronous motor (SM) with permanent magnets has many advantages compared with IM; Small size, high efficiency, driving only synchronous frequency, and so on. In this paper, “general-purpose inverter for SM driving” is discussed. Following characteristics are required for the achievement of this inverter; (1) Stable driving without position sensor. (2) Performance characteristics equal to DC motor driving. (3) Robust control system with the estimating functions of motor parameters.This paper describes practical methods that attain the above characteristics by controlling primary flux of SM. In addition, it is shown that the estimating functions of motor parameters and the inverter circuits generating voltages equal to reference are indispensable to achieve high performance over all working regions.

For sufficient transportation capacity and passengers comfort and convenience, it is very important to design the suitable lift systems (e. g., the appropriate number of cages, velocity, capacity etc.) using a model which describes real elevator movements.The procedure used in conventional design calculations for office buildings is to determine the transportation capacity for the up-peak traffic situation using a, simple passengers arrival model.This paper presents a new design calculations using balanced traffic model, which can deal with the elevetor movements considering passengers arrival rate. As some performance indexes to evaluate the quality of service can be calculated by using this model, lift system designers can determine the appropriate lift facilities as to satisfy their goals. The validity of the propsed model is also shown by comparing with the measured data in real lift systems.

A reduction in the power consumed by motors is required for energy saving in the case of electrical appliances and electric vehicles (EV). The motors used for operating these apparatus operate at variable speeds. Further, the motors operate with small load in stationary mode and with large load in start-up mode. A permanent magnet motor can operate at the rated power with a high efficiency. However, the efficiency is lower at small load or high speed because the large constant magnetic force results in substantial core loss. Furthermore, the flux-weakening current that depresses voltage at high speed leads to significant copper loss. Therefore, we have developed a new technique for controlling the magnetic force of permanent magnet on the basis of the load or speed of the motor. In this paper, we propose the novel motor that can vary magnetic flux and we clarify the principle.

In this paper, we propose a new effective method for improving waveforms of output voltages in a double connected voltage source inverter. This method is based on applying two different input DC voltages which change to two levels periodically and differ each other from half cycle in phase, as DC power supplies into the inverter apparatus. The operations of two 6-phase bridge inverter circuits and the configurations of two output transformers, connected delta-delta and delta-star, are exactly the same as the conventional 12-step inverter.First is this paper, the principle of the proposed method is described, and the optimum input voltage waveforms are decided theoretically by minimizing the total harmonic distortion factor of the output voltages in this inverter apparatus. Then we suggest that the calculated input voltages with two levels can be realized by dividing those into two DC voltage supplies whose voltage ratio is 2:1 and adding four bi-directional switching elements. Also, the capacities of the DC input sources and the output transformers are calculated.As a result, we can make clear that although the construction of the proposed inverter is very simple, the output voltage waveshapes of the inverter are almost the same as those of the 24-step inverter. The experimental discussions are also given.Moreover, a voltage control method for applying it to uninterruptible power supply is discussed. In addition, it is shown that the waveforms of output voltage in the inverter apparatus are improved, similar to the conventional 36-step or 48-step inverter when the DC voltage source is divided into 3 or 4 supply parts.

We are developing a new high performance traction motor for railway vehicle using interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) and expecting it can reduce energy consumption. To estimate the losses and energy consumption of IPMSM, a simple motor model is needed. In this paper, We propose a simple equivalent circuit and loss model for IPMSM, the constants of which can be obtained from several simple test results. The calculation results using them show that the total loss of the IPMSM becomes about 60% of that of the induction motor when used as a traction motor for a typical commuter train.

This paper is aimed at providing the designing method of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control system for the high-speed and the single-phase AC powered Gauge Changing Train (GCT). The state-of-the-art electrical motive unit is equipped with downsized direct drive type PMSMs for the simplified gauge changeable truck. Due to the feeding the AC single phase power, we propose a beat-less control for PMSMs. We verify the development results of designing procedures by the experimental results of operation on a high-speed test line in Colorado, USA.

With a view point of space factor in large-scale buildings, this paper first overviews several mass transportation systems and compares their characteristics. Then a loop-type independent-driven multiple-cage elevator system and its high-efficient control method are proposed, The multiple-cage elevator system can reduce its shaft space as half as that of normal elevator system. Computer simulations show the proposed control method can improve waiting time and round trip time, and restrain needless stops. The loop-type multiple-cage elevator system may be feasible for the third transportation system which fills the gap between elevators and escalators in the near future.

In the design, operation and evaluation of a photovoltaic power generation systems (PV systems), it is particularly important to accurately estimate the total amount of annual electric power generated by PV system. The authors applied a new I-V curve construction method developed for the calculation of output power from a photovoltaic array in order to develop a practical “simulation program for the calculation of the amount of electric power generated by PV system.” The following items were clarified by this research.

This paper discusses “the p-q theory” and “the cross-vector theory” in three-phase four-wire systems, with the focus on similarity and difference between the two theories. They are perfectly identical if no zero-sequence voltage is included in a three-phase three-wire system. However, they are different in definition of the instantaneous active power and instantaneous reactive power in each phase if a zero-sequence voltage or current is included in a three-phase four-wire system. Based on both theory and computer simulation, this paper leads to the following conclusions: An instantaneous reactive-power compensator without energy storage components can fully compensate for the neutral current even in a three-phase four-wire system including a zero-sequence voltage or current, when a proposed control strategy based on the p-q theory is applied: However, the compensator cannot compensate for the neutral current fully, when a conventional control strategy based on the cross-vector theory is applied.

The fire detection is very important to prevent a secondary disaster and to save the assistance for safe driving in the master plan of ITS. At present, the fire detectors, which have a high sensitivity, are used in order to detect the fire in tunnels. It has problems such that the detection area is very narrow and sensor head is fouled by exhaust fumes. Compared with the fire detectors, image sensor is suitable to detect the fire, because it can cover two-dimensional wide space. We had attempted elsewhere the fire detection, which compares two histograms with various shades of gray level, by means of image processing. However, there remained problems about the influence of passing vehicle in the actual outdoors environment. The flame has characteristic such that its state is unstable and repeats growth and decay. A new approach toward the fire detection based on fluctuation of the flame has been described in this paper. Conventional fire detectors could detect only a phenomenon of the fire. However, proposal method could detect not only the flame but also its position. We conducted simulation and field tests to verify the accuracy of this method, and confirmed the effectiveness.

Cardiac pacemaker has to be changed in three to five years for the battery life. A patients must be performed an operation whenever a patient is changed cardiac pacemaker. The method employing secondary rechargeable battery is researched to extend the battery life. The secondary rechargeable battery is transcutaneously charged from outside the body. This paper presents a transcutaneous energy transmission system for a rechargeable cardiac pacemaker battery. The transcutaneous energy transmission system is constructed with a high frequency resonant inverter, a transcutaneous transformer and a rectifier circuit. The secondary transformer is piled and the coupling coefficient and the conversion efficiency are measured with an experimental set up. The results show as follows. The best diameter of the primary center core is 15[mm]. The best output voltage frequency is 10[kHz].

In this paper, we investigate effects of harmonic electromagnetic field to torque characteristics of induction motors from both side of experiment and electromagnetic field analysis. The characteristics of two kinds of the aluminum cage three-phase induction motors are measured and calculated. One is with the closed rotor slots. The other is semi-closed. In the experiment, the negative torque at synchronous speed is measured by driving the induction motor by the synchronous permanent magnet motor. The total torque at load condition is also measured by the torque detector. In the analysis, the harmonic magnetic fields, the harmonic losses and the harmonic torques at each time and space harmonic order are calculated using the nonlinear time-stepping finite element method to clarify the mechanism of the harmonic torque generation. The measured and the calculated results agree well. It is clarified that the negative torque caused by the slot harmonics at the rated load condition is not negligible and that the negative torque is mainly generated by the harmonic core losses.

This paper describes the improvements in launching stability and launching velocity of the linear accelerator (LAC).<br>The authors have designed and produced a railgun using the LAC for weaving loom shuttles. The LAC is an electromagnetic launcher which enable a projectile to be launched at a speed of more than 50m/s. It basically consists of an uni-pole linear DC motor and operates the same principle as DC rotary motors, the most difficult problem in this system being the stabilization of the current collection on the projectile.<br>Then we have conducted the various launch experiments. As a result, we have achieved that the carbon projectile was launched at a speed of 73m/s using double-stage type LAC.
