The authors maintain that there are unique and common forms of cultures that humans set aside such as the behavior and grammar within each culture. We suggest a computer model of this and a method of interactive expression and experiencing cultural understanding using IT called "cultural computing". This paper describes Hitch Haiku, a system based on cultural computing that interactively aids users in generating haiku, the world's shortest poems with imagery-maximizing mechanisms. First, "kire-ji" and particles are added to the word (s) input by a user to make a five or seven-character phrase, then phrases including terminology related to the user's input are located in a phrase database holding examples of haiku from the literary calendar, ensuring the cultural validity of the haiku. These phrases are then "hitched" together to generate a haiku. Although the haiku generated by this system have periodically resulted in flawed haiku, the ability to generate haiku that support the expansion of users' minds has been confirmed through assessment experimentation.

本研究の目的は,国内企業の取引ネットワークの可視化である.そこで,取引ネットワークにおける階層ごとにアイコンの高度を段階的に変化させ,デジタルアース上にプロットする.さらに,地域内・地域間における取引をそれぞれ別の色で表現する.このビジュアライゼーションから,日本国内における企業間取引のあらましを読み取り,産業集積の度合を観察することができた.したがって,著者らの手法により,取引ネットワークの可視化ができることがわかった.

A non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) method is presented for generating stippling on the basis of multiplicatively weighted centroidal Voronoi tessellations (CVT). Multiplicative weights are set and updated on the basis of the position of generating points and pixel values of an input image. This paper presents three kinds of multiplicative weights, that is, fixed, variable and monotonically nondecreasing ones. Experimental results show that the stipplings generated by the present method have sharper edges than that by multiplicatively unweighted CVTs.

Today, the demand is increasing for comic contents on cellular phones and speech software for the visually impaired. When speech software reads aloud a comic character's speech, it is useful for both the visually impaired and unimpaired to have the character's voice injected with his/her feeling, which is inferred from types of speech balloons. As a result, comic contents come to life. In this research, a method has been developed to detect speech balloons on comic pages and then classify them into four types. In this method, speech balloon candidates are extracted based on speech text information detected by AdaBoost, and then speech balloons are selected and classified using SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully detected and classified 86 percent of 2844 speech balloons.

A new extended color space camera, "XTF (eXtended Tri-angular Format) ", is proposed, where, through the use of YRGB color separation, RGB color signals are modified to obtain negative primary colors (those outside the RGB triangle) : the difference between Y (a taken luminance signal) and Y' (the calculated luminance signal, i.e., the weighted sum of taken R, G and B colors) is allotted to the taken R, G, B colors. The ratios of allotting it to these colors are decided, e.g., inversely-proportional to these taken color signals, respectively. Computer simulation confirmed that the "XTF" camera performs well.

ISOとITU-Tに共通の新たな2値画像符号化標準JBIG2が誕生した.新標準は, パターンマッチング技術の利用により, テキスト画像のビジュアリロスレス圧縮で従来標準の数倍の圧縮性能を有し, ロスレス圧縮やハーフトーン画像圧縮でも従来標準を大きく凌駕する.本稿では2値画像符号化の歴史にもふれつつ, JBIG, JBIG2の最新動向を紹介する.
