The government, companies and universities in Japan have been emphasizing the importance to educate young people to be competent in globalized business world. Assuming gap year as one of tactics to train the young Japanese, increasing attention has been paid to gap year in Japan, and as a result, the factual knowledge about gap year has been gradually accumulated. Now we know that gap year is a traditional custom in the UK, the number of British participants of gap year, who are involved in it, and the varieties how it is conducted. However, the stakeholders' recognition on gap year in the UK has not been investigated in detail. It would be important for Japanese stakeholders to know how stakeholders in the UK think on gap year in order to attract and encourage the young Japanese to participate such a mental energy consuming activity. A piece of qualitative research is conducted on and it is found that the gap on assumptions on purpose of gap year between those who believe that gap year is an effective way to enrich individual's CV and those who assume that it is one of opportunities to develop the world citizenship. These assumptions are not clearly recognized by the participants. It is important to clarify the purpose of the gap year when universities conduct gap year as part of their programs.

In Japan there is a clear preference for ‘native speaker’ varieties of English, but in a time where English is used by more non-native speakers (NNSs) than native-speakers (NSs), students who have no exposure to non-native varieties may find themselves unprepared for the world that awaits them. This project focused on World Englishes for several lessons as part of a third year university writing course. The students were required to write an essay on the topic and a survey was administered to further gauge their views. As there was a very limited sample (n=20) the results cannot be generalized, but the findings give some insight into student views that are worth sharing. The study found that while the majority of students felt that learning different varieties of English was important, they favoured NS teachers over NNS teachers and some expressed fear that learning more than one variety would lead to confusion. It seems that while these students were open to the idea of World Englishes, they were reluctant to take steps towards learning about different varieties. As such, it is their teachers who will have to take the initiative in developing their English skills for the world stage that awaits them. It is hoped that this minor research project will encourage others to explore World Englishes with their students, which may in turn lead to more data on this important topic being collected and shared.

The sophomores and juniors who joined Prof. Iwamura's seminars in 2009 academic year focused case studies of local community development along with "B-Class gourmet" projects. Today in Japan, many local municipalities suffer from economic slowdowns and extinction of local industries. Therefore, they have begun to think of welcoming people from outside of their community by providing reasonable local gourmet food and meals so that they can activate their hometowns. There are many types of local gourmet courtesy. Students at seminars presented many cases of such and Prof. Iwamura summarizes their reports.

This research focuses on the problems of family care in Japan and discusses a social work practice model that can explain these problems. Applying the concept of symbolic interaction as the framework for analysis, I tried to develop an integrated theory that would explain the meaning of family care and that would guide social work interventions. The result of the study indicates that the meaning of family care differs from one caregiver to another, depending on the experience of each caregiver and on the interpretation of experience by each caregiver. In addition, I introduced a new concept of "burying the past" for the purpose of better understanding the problems. These new theories are expected to be useful for preventing and intervening on the problems of family care in Japan.

The internationally renowned German architect, Bruno Taut, is known in Europe a an architect of immense genius who, due to Nazi persecution of left-wing thinkers, was forced to seek exile in Japan. What is not known in Europe is that Taut wrote a significant amount of work on Japanese Culture. The focus of this paper focuses on the contradictions between Taut's reputation as a left-wing architect in Europe and his active support in Japan for a most oppressive form of culture.

Paulo Coelho is one of the most widely read authors in the world today. The main aim of his works is to bring things out of hiding. He considers the world as the place where people make their dreams come true, but they seem to have been kept away from power to do so. In his writings, something inevitable happens and the protagonists are forced to face with their lives. Examining themselves thoroughly, they find out false stories which have been told over and over since their childhood and that finally they accepted. On the other hand, they start to search for truths. Through their eyes, we can notice the world is much richer than we think. Coelho tries to let us know that we have power and possibility so that we can live as we really want.

Although there are no testimonies which present piracy as crucial menace for Romans, they had increasingly carried out the military actions against pirates by the end of the 2nd. Century B.C. That appears to be explained by two factors:1. An imperialistic tactics: Rome would have presented themselves as a protector of the mediterranean world by the suppression of pirates.2 A measure in the Roman political life: The military success gave Roman elites some political advantages. It would seem that piracy was a political issue for Romans in these two meanings. However, evidences of Roman attack against Cilician pirates in 102-100 B.C. show us that the pirates would have brought Romans into certain critical conditions. The judgment on this supposition requires us an inquiry into the situation in the following century.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has quietly been a part of our daily lives for a long time. Advancements in this technology, however, are set to unleash its true potential and bring its benefits to many more components of the industrial field. By utilizing RFID technology, we can achieve minimized cost in various application programs/systems. The technology allows for higher automation, reducing the need for manual intervention. This can increase the speed at which a product flows through the new application fields, thereby lowering the need for safety stock. In this paper, we introduce a new application system by RFID which is used in medical education, especially acupuncture study in oriental and Western medicines.

This paper explores a best-seller book entitled Kojima no Haru or Spring in the Island published in 1938. The book, written by Ogawa Masako, a medical doctor who was working for a leprosarium named Nagashima Aiseien in Okayama prefecture, is a report of her trip to Kochi, Tokushima, and Okayama to give lectures on leprosy to a public audience and to persuade patients living in their homes to enter leprosarium. Sentimentalism amplified with Tanka scattered throughout in the book, Kojima no Haru made the readers to consider leprosy patients as miserable and pitiful people. This stereotypical image of patients spurred a paternalistic approach toward the patients thereafter.

Fieldwork, a procedure that has been elaborated in the anthropological research, is an effective method in the study of terminal care. Narratives of informants are gathered and analyzed in detail, while also focusing on self-reflectively. The subject of my fieldwork in the study of terminal care is "spirituality." Spirituality in terminal care is related to "spiritual pain." Together with three other types of pain, physical, mental and social pain, spiritual pain constitutes "total pain." In the U.K. and the United States, the connotation of spiritual pain has shifted from religious to secular, and almost the same process has occurred in Japan. This change reflects the fact that death has become a personal matter. And behind this, there exists individualism which puts significance on the fact that an individual should choose her/his own way of dying. I aim to grasp the relationship between individualization of death and spirituality.

Rev. Adam Sedgwick was one of the geological Great Masters who established modern geology in 19th century Britain. But to students of evolution, he was better known as a mentor of Charles Darwin at Cambridge, responsible taking him on his first geological field trip to Wales. Nevertheless, Sedgwick later strongly opposed the idea of evolution put forward by his former student, and never approved of it till his death. Since then, scientific assessment has been rather negative about Sedgwick seeing him as being conservative and dogmatic in his religious faith. However, he was no simplistic hardhead; rather as he was a central figure working for university reforms at the time, and was both liberal and at times radical, his complexity puzzles us. As for his intransigence against evolution, the author suspects there must have been some underlying reasons for it.\nThis article, by analysing his life, faith and science, investigates how this attractive individual, Adam Sedgwick, made his way through tumultuous 19th century Britain. Throughout his life, Sedgwick always interpreted the contemporary scene shrewdly, and after assessing the situation, would put all his energy into it enthusiastically. His attitude to life eventually made him one of the most prominent men of Cambridge at the time.
