Kamigamo Shake-machi in Kyoto has a historic water system consisted of canal network and old ponds in residential sites of Shinto priests. This study aims to clarify its transition since the Meiji era. The location of canals and ponds were investigated chronologically through the reference of old maps and a series of interviews with inhabitants in Shake-machi today. The major results are the followings: a) Water supplied by water system in Kamigamo Shake-machi has been used for domestic use and irrigation use. b) There were a total of 50 ponds supplied from water system. c) Today the water is supplied to only about half of 50 ponds. d) Seven ponds were constructed after the Meiji era. e) The number of surviving ponds varies from area to area. It depends on the development control and feature of water system.
