The areas around the Kamisunagawa tunnel were dotted with many cavities from of old coal mines. Furthermore, as this tunnel was planned to pass Gm beneath a very decrepit existing tunnel, there was a fear that the two would interfere with each other.The main results obtained through this construction method are as follows.(a) Under complex ground conditions, as in the case of this tunnel, “urethane-injected rock-bolts” are an effective reinforcing measure, as they do not require special equipment.(b) When excavating the new tunnel beneath the existing one, a distorted settlement phenomenon occurred in the existing tunnel, due to weak strata. When weak strata exist, natural ground reinforcement is required in wide areas.

We applied Raise Boring Method for inclined shaft which is 434m-diameter, 340m-long and 70degrees inclined in Bukou mine. It was first time that RHINO 2006DC, large raise boring machine made by Tamrock Finland, was used in Japan and this is the world's largest class raise boring project in inclined shafts, We have broken through it with only 0.5% error in spite of some troubles that was caused by geological condition, very cracked limestone, We have overcome these troubles by some new technologies, for example memory type direction and inclination measurement system, excavation management system, solid stabilizer and so on.This experience suggest us a spread of possibility of Raise Boring Method.

RINKAI Line HIGASHI-SHINAGAWA Tunnel (L=983.m) has been constructed by slurry shield tunnelling method. The distance between the parallel two tunnels are very close (Average = 2.8m, Minimum = 0.5m) and some important structures exist on the ground surface. Therefore, careful operation and management of the tunnelling works including detailed in-situ monitoring was carried out. As a result, settlement on the ground surface was very small.<BR>In this paper, shield excavation data and ground movements are discussed.

A part of JR Senseki Line in Sendai City was switched to underground. We adopted Soil Mixing Wall (SMW) method for the construction work. As this wall cut off most of the groundwater flow, we had analyzed the influences in advance using the finite element analysis and conceived to control the groundwater flow by replacing the retaining wall partially with permeable materials after construction.This paper shows variation of groundwater level affected by the SMW and recovered by the effective countermeasures. Furthermore, it is also referred to the accuracy of the prediction checked by regression formula.

Bureau of Sewerage, Tokyo metropolitan goverment has a plan to increase the efficiency of constructing sanitary or combined sewer tunnels to reduce the cost of shield tunneling for sewerage systems. Specifically, segments in sanitary or combined sewer tunnels are shop-applied with secondary linings to eliminate secondary lining work at the site. This paper describes the results of a study to standardize the method of designing segments shop-applied with secondary linings, which are referred to as “secondary-lining-applied segments”.

Takagawa Tunnel is is port of Yamanasi Maglev Test Line. The length of this tunnel is approximately 3, 960m.KOFU side of this tunnel has characteristics that tunnel over-burden is approximately 5m to 20m and ground conditions consist of loose soil.This document is being described regarding KOFU side of This Tunnel, where this is the smollest tunnel over-burden of This Tunnel and this location was curried out Protection Work for the Building By Vertical Anchor Method.

Okura tunnel is located in Route 4 of Kitakyushu Urban Expressway. The road in the up-line that has two lanes is restructured wider to have three lanes within 170m range from pithead. The construction is carried out while the two lanes are open by installing protectors as guardrail inside the tunnel.Road widening without traffic control by using protectors is conducted in other cases before but this construction is recognized to be the first case for widening of two lanes to three under urban expressway's heavy traffic.This report presents the construction's plan and design summary, and discusses the differences in the design and the actual construction of tunnel excavation.

The Higashi-roppongi station is a new station of the Namboku-line which is under construction by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority. And this new station is situated in proximity to the metropolitan expressway structures and worked in the ground with high groundwater levels. Therefore it has been planed to carry out the pre-excavation timbering by transverse diaphragm and the wet excavation for safety works. This report will examine these special methods and analyze influences on the adjacent expressway structures.

Miharasi tunnel located near the port Yokohama, is one of the typical OLD URBAN tunnel that needed reconstruction because of it's change to out of date from the recent traffic. However, for the sake of the geological conditions, the situation was hard to maintain the traffics during construction works. After various comparative examinations, a twin (couple) tunnel plan was successfully adopted with complicated constructive sequences. The total data obtained by long term and careful examination with the twin tunnelling, as well as the whole planning, would brought useful suggestion for another similar following plan.

In HIDA pilot tunnel, the hydraulic head pressure which is equal to thickness of earth covering is confirmed by boring, as the rock pressure is increasing due to high earth covering which is 1000m. By using a double steel pipe, geology ahead of the tunnel face could be investigated more. Large-scale crash was avoidable with the AGF method of construction. A large-scale collapse occurred when the face reached about 900m point from the east portal. Soil from collapse containing cobble gravels became an avalanche with a large amount of water, and has surged to the portal. Ground surface of 130m from collapse point was caving like Crater. These was no human damage and a little material damage though it was such a huge disaster. Countermeasures are as follows, caving area was restored with air-mortar, boring was done for drainage from the tunnel, grouting was done right under the collapse area. The tunneling work was completed from the record-breaking collapse two years later.

Iiyama tunnel has bored into Tertiary sandstone, mudstone and tuffbreccia which include inflammable gas like methane gas, at boundary of Nagano and Niigata prefecture. For methane gas is very combustible and explode easily, investigation and monitoring of inflammable gas is very important for safety construction of the tunnel. It was reported that horizontal exploratory boring, automated monitoring system and ventilation system for dilution of the gas were applied effectively on this tunneling.
