Ease of reading Hirakana in a vertical column and in a horizontal row are compared by a tachistoscope. Meaningless horizontal writing was read in a shorter duration compared with meaningless vertical writing. Moreover, the meaningful writing had advantage more than meaningless one.

NHK has developed the NTSC-Compatible MUSE-6 system for an ATV system in the United States. In this system, vertical high frequency components are multiplexed in the top-and-bottom portions of a letter-box picture. This paper describes the vertical filtering method of an NTSC-Compatible MUSE-6 signal.

We developed an Input Signal Processing IC for MUSE-NTSC CONVERTER. It contains 8.1MHz LPF, ALC, and CLAMP circuits. We adopted a low cost PLL system, which made it possible to reduce the cost of Input Signal Processing unit.

This paper describes a CNR(CNR : Chroma Noise Reducer) for MUSE decoder. This system adopts a frame recursive type NR after MUSE decoding, it is able to take effect for motion-adaptive and motion-compensation.

A compatibility test of FM multiplex broadcasting has been done. After the end of daily FM programs, the test signals multiplexed by L-MSK method have been broadcasted from NHK FM Tokyo (82.5MHz) station. The audio impairment by L-MSK signals has been servayed by polling listeners. The compatibility of L-MSK FM multiplex signal has been confirmed through more tahn 2,000 responses.

Smooth pursuit eye movement system shows different control characteristics according to the types of target motion. Frequency characteristics were measured using combinations of various two frequency sinusoidal waves. The gain reduction and the phase lead were observed for lower frequency components. Results suggest taht the smooth pursuit system adaptively changes its characteristics-presumably the stiffness of extraocular muscles-to effectively responds to a target motion.

The Nihon-kawauso has not been seen since May 1979,when a NHK Kochi Bureau cameraman recorded its picture. However, last March, feces presumed to be that of the nihon-kawauso was found at the sea-shore of a western town of Kochi Prefecture. This is expected to be proof of living kawauso. NHK Kochi Bureau was asked for technical assistance in recording the nihon-kawauso by the Kochi Prefecture Nature Preserve Section, and installed a camera which automatically records when activated by its infra-red sensor. This sensor also activates a VCR in Kochi City's NHK Bureau which receives footage from the camera via a series of video links. The following is a report of this 24 hour automatic recording system.

This paper describes radiation patterns of ladder and hexagonal type 6L-polyloop antennas with finite reflector which we have measured. The polyloop antenna has a structure of directly stacked two "Wavelength Circumference Loop Antenna" or more. We have obtained good results from the ladder type antenna. The half-power beam width of vertical radiation patterns are 33°-42°throughout the band-width which is 30% of it's center frequency.

Poly Loop Antenna is a new type of UHF broadcasting antenna derived from both "Ladder-Type Loop Antenna" and "Tetracene-Type Antenna" which we published before. This antenna has a structure of directry stacked two "Wavelength Circumference Loop Antenna" or more. The folloing explanations are how poly loop antenna works.
