In this syudy, we investigated which kind of muscles were activated during the boxing punch. Muscular activities were obtained from the upper and lower limbs. The instrument used in this research was a portable EMG. The muscular activity of the lower limbs was higher than that of upper limbs. Moreover, the muscular activity in punching against the mitt was higher than in shadowboxing.

This study investigated pitching motion reproducibility in baseball using two pitchers as subjects, a graduate student and a person on the university ball team. Both were asked to actually throw, and a photograph was taken with a high-speed camera. Analysis was done using 2-dimensional picture. The results revealed that the coefficient of variation of the arm motion [two subjects] increased among the seven items measures. From this, it is thought that the arm motion before release (forearm, upper arm, and elbow) is related to ball control.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of medical books found in the Library of Taiso-Denshujo (the National Normal School of Gymnastics). Those books had been relocated to the library at the University of Tsukuba. Results of this study are as follows : 1) As the conception and the method of physical education should have been introduced into Japan from America and European countries at the beginning of the modernization of Japan, the school under the direction of Leland, G. A. tried to purchase the western books of medicine as well as those of physical education. 2) Taiso-Denshujyo changed the curriculam from the education which depended much on the western books to that using Japanese translation in 1871. This change urged the library of the school to get many books of translation. 3) The medical books of Japanese translation began to increase since 1878 and it met the demand of the changing education in the school. 4) The library collected two kinds of western medical books for the student. The one was an academic type of thick book and the other was a popular type of handy book. 5) As regards the western books of medicine used for the text book or reference one, the library had the books published in 1880. It was the early period of the school that the library bought many western medical books. 6) Among the western medical books, E. A. Parkes' A Manual of Practical Hygiene had an important meaning for the making of physical education. Because the book greatly influenced upon the G. A. Leland's lectures of physical education, particularly on the effect of exercise.

本研究の目的は、立幅跳び踏切時に各関節で発揮されるパワーをリンクセグメントモデルを用いて算出し、その特徴を、垂直跳びのそれと比較して検討することであった。 被検者として男子大学生20名 (19.2±0.7歳、174.7±7.2cm、65.5±7.9kg) が参加した。 動作の撮影を、被検者の右側方から Hi-Speed Video (200fps) をもちいておこなった。 同時に動作中の床反力をフォースプレートから得た。 全身のパワーに対する各関節のパワーの割合を貢献度とした。 その結果は、以下のようであった。 1) リンクセグメントモデルは、このモデルから推定した床反力とフォースプレートから得た床反力とがほとんど一致していることから、本研究における数値に妥当性を与えると判断した。 2) 踏切時に発揮される平均のパワーは、立幅跳び (1516±284.8watt) が垂直跳び (1210±247.8watt) よりも大きかった。 3) パワーのほとんどは下肢の関節が発揮していた。 4) 股関節の貢献度は垂直跳び・立幅跳びそれぞれ52.3、59.6%で、全ての関節の中で最も大きかった。 5) 膝関節の貢献度は、垂直跳び、立幅跳びそれぞれ32.3、4.3%であった。 立幅跳びでの膝関節の貢献度はないに等しかった。 また、足関節の貢献度は垂直跳び・立幅跳びそれぞれ17.5、37.2%で立幅跳びの方が大きかった。

We experienced 7 cases of Stress facture of Spinous Processes of lower Cervical Vertebra in "T" surgical hospital. One case was caused by a traffic accident, 3 were caused from work. Out of these 7 cases, 1 was caused by golf swing and 2 were caused by combination of golf swing and work. We fixed Cervical vertebra 3 month by cervical orthosis and the prognosis was favorable.

It has been reported that the spin axis of a pitched baseball differs between adult pitchers and youth pitchers (Tezuka and Himeno 2001). However, that information was based on visual observation, and has not been determined quantitatively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ball spin orientation and spin rate of youth pitchers compared with those for adult pitchers. In addition, the development of the throwing motion and factors in the determination of spin rate were discussed. Fourteen youth baseball pitchers (13.9±1.2 years) and nine collegiate baseball pitchers (20.1± 0.8 years) were selected as subjects. All of them were classified as over-hand style pitchers. The baseball was filmed immediately after the ball release using a high-speed video camera (250 Hz). The direction of spin axis and the spin rate were calculated using positional changes of drawn marks on the ball surface. The direction of the spin axis was defined by two angles, θ(azimuth) and φ(elevation). The angle between spin axis and pitching direction (α) was also obtained (Jinji and Sakurai 2006). Mean values of the angles of the spin axis showed no significant differences between youth pitchers and collegiate pitchers. As for variations within each trial, however, youth pitchers were significantly more inconsistent than collegiate pitchers. Although youth pitchers have acquired similar pitching motion to adults on average, their motion was often unstable with large variations. There was a significant difference in the mean values of spin rate between the youth pitchers and collegiate pitchers (p<0.001). Moreover, the spin rate correlated significantly with the initial ball velocity (p<0.001). Pitchers with a higher initial velocity achieved a notably higher spin rate. It was concluded that a pitching motion that increased the ball velocity consequently increased spin rate.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the developmental process of 'Athletic Sports' from the 1874 meeting of the Imperial Naval College to the 1883 meeting of Tokyo University. Official documents of the government in the National Archives and articles of the Japan Weekly Mail were analyzed. Results of this study were as follows : 1) It was ascertained that the Imperial Naval College held 'Athletic Sports' on April 7, 1876. 2) Although most of the events were the same as those in 1874, Japanese officials of the college also joined the committee for the meeting and Japanese Fencing was added to the program. Thus the meeting was somewhat "Japanized" this time. Moreover, it must be noted that events including casualness and uncertainty, such as a blindfold race, a flat race with a bucket of water on the head, and a flat race to pick up 20 eggs, were not adopted in 1876. 3) The same site was used for 'Athletic Sports' by foreigners' athletic organizations, i.e., the Tokyo Amateur Athletic Association in 1876 and the Tokio Athletic Club in 1877 and 1878. The Parade Ground being at the disposal of the athletic organizations by the Naval Department, the attendance of the band of the Imperial Japanese Marines, and the participation of the cadets of the Imperial Naval College suggest that there was a close relationship and that the organizations were supported by the Naval Department and the Imperial Naval College. 4) F. W. Strange who taught English at Tokyo English College, later the Preparatory Course of Tokyo University, was an active member of those organizations. He also participated in the various meetings and matches held by foreigners' sports organizations in Yokohama. With his rich experiences in administration and participation, he worked for the introduction of 'Athletic Sports' at Tokyo University. From the viewpoint of sports history he was in fact a mediator between 'Athletic Sports' of the Imperial Naval College and that of Tokyo University. 5) Before the meeting of Tokyo University, F. W. Strange published a booklet, the title of which was "OUTDOOR GAMES". It aimed to give some information on the outdoor games to Japanese students to induce them to keep their health. The program of 'Athletic Sports' was composed of the same events as those cited in the booklet except for the three-legged race. It showed the exclusion of the events including casualness and uncertainty while the later Gymnastics Exhibition included some of those events, which became indispensable items for school undokai.

One of the political difficulties facing the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games is how to open this worldwide event. That is to say, can the Republic of Korea cosponsor with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea? Needless to say, as the widespread involvement of youth in sports event is one of the basic purposes for the founding of our modern Olympic Games since 1986, the present situation proves the success of that intent in general. However, the phenomenal growth of interest in this big event has played it political role. The escalation of the political effect on the Olympic Games is radical between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The IOC has to bear responsibility for the present state of affairs between these two countries. From this point of view, the IOC has expend a great effort to how to open the '88 Seoul Olympics, and has made approaches to these two countries. But its repeated attempts have been made without any noticeable result. Also, repeated attempts for this problem have been continued between these two countries. The author debated these problems, and pointed out that sport and politics are not separate problem, but one, especially in the rival countries. Because, sport, especially the Olympic Games as the big event can't refused the political effort.

Biological responses due to thermal stimuli were categorized based on the areas of the human body as well as on the modalities of thermal stresses such as icing, cooling and heating applications. These biological responses reported in previous papers were analyzed based on the concepts of Selective Brain Cooling (SBC) and long-term fever range (FR)-mild hyperthermia. Although no thermophysiological problems occurred in the case reports of biological responses induced by SBC, the effects of those induced by cooling of the body trunk and extremities were not so thoroughly evaluated. On the other hand, the idea of long-term fever range (FR)-mild hyperthermia (39.5-41.0℃) proved to be helpful in therapies enhancing the immune defenses against virulent bacterial diseases through the proliferation of Langerhans cells (LCs) and, under these conditions, it might even be beneficially combined with Selective Brain Cooling (SBC) and body heating to enhance human health and physical performance.

By comparing the performance between World Top Gymnasts and Japanese gymnasts, the following were revealed: 1) BOGVINSKAIA and SLIVAS getting 10.00 points seemed to deserve to be champion, because BOGVINSKAIA had her own characteristic movements and high guality balanced performance of series. SILVAS, on the other hand, had high degree of rythmical movements. 2) Amang the Japanese gymnasts, SHINODA got 9.837 and her performance seemed to give a good example with regard to getting a high score for Japanese gymnasts in the future. 3) Prize winners executed much more D technigue than Japanese gymnasts and they got as a result much more additional points. 4) Many Japanese gymnasts had mistaken at landing stage and this made their points very lower. 5) To execute the most difficult movements does not mean necessarily to be able to get a higher point. When a gymnast show a good mixture of movements, she will have a good evaluation.

野球のバッティングにおける腰の回転と下肢の長軸回りの回転の様子を明らかにするため、鉛直上方より右打者において打撃動作中の腰角度および長軸回りの右脚角度を求めた。また、独自の器具を打者の右腰および右膝に装着させ、打撃動作に伴う腰の動きと右脚の動きの関連性について調べた。その結果、以下の結果が得られた。1) バットのヘッドスピードの速い打者はスイング前半から腰の回転が右脚の内旋よりも先行して行われていた。また、L (右側腸骨外側延長点から右膝外側延長線まで延ばした垂線の距離) の値は打撃動作に伴い減少し、打撃動作の比較的早い段階で0に達していた。2) バットのヘッドスピードの遅い打者はスイング前半から腰の回転に比べ右脚の内旋が先行して行われていた。また、Lの値は-192msecから増加傾向を示し、インパクト直前で0に達していた。

Current interest is attracted to the problem on the correlation between physical exercise and heat shock induced protein (HSP 70), especially on the enhanced postischemic myocardial recovery following exercise induction of HSP 70. From the recent papers, the inducible isoform of the 70kDa heat shock protein (HSP) family, HSP 70kDa has been confirmed to protect cells from protein-damaging stressors and has been associated with not only myocardial protection but also recovery of several tissue damages. In the present review article, therefore, the related papers to exercise induced body hyperthermia, muscular damage and HSP 70 family, and their protection and/or recovery mechanism were collected and analyzed from the view-points of biological functions of stress protein HSP 70 family as well as of Granyl-Granyl Acetone (GGA) the HSP inducer.
