To express the condition of putting watch on the wrist, it seems that a phrase "this watch fits on wrist" is sometimes used among Japanese people. The present research started to survey the practical meaning of this common phrase. First of all, we observed one by one the wrist of one hundred males and females passing through a ticket gate of the station Tachikawa to survey the watch position put on theit wrists. According to this observation, the position "C" sa mentioned in Figure 1 of this text was determined as the representative position. Second, we selected at random fifty male and female employees of the Orient Watch Company to examine their wrist size and shape. As the result, we found out that there is a close mutual relation between the wrist size and shape, and body weight. Finally, we arrived at a following conclusion that we can make a proper presumption of general size and shape of wrist about the average people by examining their body weight.

This paper describes an improved drive system of stepping motor, which contributes much to the decrease in current consumption of the existing stepping motor. We introduce here the Adaptive-Controlled Drive System, where the detecting method of rotation or non-rotation of rotor is the most important. This drive system permits us to design smart wrist watches with Center secorld & Calendar, reducing the current consumption of stepping motor to less than 1 μA; the value is a half or a third as large as that by the conventional drive system with the fixed pulse width. If the battery life of the watch is fixed, the capacity of the battery can be halved approximately. Namely, the effective life can be doubled at the same capacity. All the elements msed for this system are constituted within the IC driven at 1.57 V, and the system itself requires little (almost negligible) power consumption.

A Relation between Q-value of a linear oscillator and its frequency stability is described here. When an external force in Roexp iωt (ω=ω_0+ω_1 : ω_0 resonance frequency of the oscillator: ω_l : random variable frequency) exerts on the oscillator with the resistant force proportional to its velocity, and when σ, variation of ωl, is greater than Δω(=ω_0/2Q), a calculation is tried by aid of statistical method. Moreover in this report, correlation fu-function of ω_1 is assumed to be quasi-static, that is the power spectrum of the external force is Gaussian type. And the following result is obtained. S=√<1/(2Q)(√<2/π>σ/(ω_0)-1/Q> where s is fractional frequency stability of the oscillator.

This paper describes a new quartz watch driving system we developed. With this system, the second hand of a wrist watch moves smoothly as if it is sweeping. An intermittent movement of the stepping motor is transferred to a smooth sweeping motion due to the spiral spring and the viscous regulator. This system also allows the continued superiority of quartz watches.

An anologue quartz timepiece, Cal. 7A28, the first Analogue Quartz Chronograph in the world, is reported here, which is operated by four independent driving motors. Cal. 7A28 is an Analogue Quartz Chronograph with the improved levels in time measuring efficiency, time accuracy, reliability, and maintenance, and also is an analogue quartz timepiece including complicated and multiple functions. In this paper, the operating performance, structure of the movement, and the electronic circuit are discussed in connection with the fine mechanism and the microelctronics. This paper may serve to promote analogue quartz timepieces equipped with multiple functions.
