(1) I found Ampulex amoena Stal in Kyoto first in the summer of 1951. Since then the wasp was observed every year in my garden. It appears in June and disappears in late autumn. In 1954 the first ♀ was found on June 21 while in 1956 on June 29 and the last ♀ was seen on Nov.13 in 1955. (2) The adult wasps (♀♂) seems to suck in sap oozing out from the points injured by the rostrum of cicadas (Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata Motschulsky and Platypleura kaempheri Fabricius on Abies and other trees. (3) The female wasp hunts the medium-sized nymph of Periplaneta picea Shiraki and hides it in some crevices of wooden buildings to oviposit on it. At 2 p.m. on Aug. 13, 1956, I observed only once her hunting habit in a small glass box (7×5×0.5 cm.) made as a cage for artificial ant nest. "She grasped one of the cockroach legs with her mandibles to prevent it from escape and soon changed her grasping point to the edge of its 2nd abdominal tergite. She stretched her abdomen towards the ventral surface of its thorax to sting it at the base of one of its coxae. The stinging point was not ascertained. Then she seized it by the proximal portion of its antennae and stung it 3 times behind its gular region. She began to transport it seizing by its antennae." (4) The paralyzed cockroach (18 mm. long) had short-cut antennae (6 mm. long) and was able to move its legs violently when stimulated but not walk voluntarily. It could suck up fruit juice the next day. The wasp egg (2.5×0.95 mm.) was attached longitudinally along the basal portion of one of its mesocoxae, directing its cephalic pole proximad. (5) The above egg hatched at 6 : 35 a.m. on Aug. 15. After sucking up the body fluid, the larva began to devour the prey at 15 p.m. on Aug. 17 and the prey lost its response ability. On Aug. 20 the larva spun its cocoon and on Sep. 19 a female wasp came out from this cocoon.

Three species of the family Strongylophthalmyiidae are reported from Japan. Of these, two species of the genus Strongylophthalmyia, namely S. japonica and S. caliginosa, are described as new to science. S. crinita HENNIG is newly recorded from Japan. A key to the Japanese species is also presented.

Life history of the adelid moth Nemophora albiantennella ISSIKI, 1930, was investigated in the riverbed of the Kizu river (Yawata City, Kyoto, Japan) in 1993. Daily activity pattern of N. albiantennella was reported in the light of basic information for the adelid flight behavior and it was classified into "non-swarming" species sensu KOZLOV (1987). Flower preference of the feeding adults was also discussed in relation to height of the flowers. The host plant was found as Poa trivialis L. and Lolium multiflorum Lan. both belonging to the Poaceae that is previously unknown host-plant family in Adelidae.

Seasonal food supply for the house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, was investigated from 1985 to 1986 on the campus of Hirosaki University, Aomori Prefecture. A total of 1490 animals caught by the spider were collected in the two years census and classified into 15 orders of arthropods, in which wingless animals predominated. The abundance of the wingless animals in the diets might be due to the web structure of this spider. Though the spiders fed at any time, more than half of the prey items were captured during the daytime (6 : 00-18 : 00). The seasonal food supply as inferred from the rate of predation shows an unimodal pattern with a peak in July. The result corresponded well with the seasonal trend of the number of possible prey animals collected by sticky traps in the same field. As this spider continues to reproduce over a long period of time, its nymphal development should be considerably affected by the seasonal food supply.

The following seven new species of the family Sciaridae associated with the flowers of Arisaema serratum (THUNBERG) are described from Japan : Phytosciara (Prosciara) arisaemae, Phytosciara (Dolichosciara) insolita and P. (D.) megumiae, Paractenosciara longimentula, Bardysia divaricata, Corynoptera dumosa and C. licina. Paractenosciara n. gen. is characterized by the presence of macrotrichia on the fork of vein media. Phytosciara (Prosciara) ungulata (WINNERTZ) is newly recorded from Japan.

A new littoral species representing a new subgenus of the genus Rhamphomyia is described. The species has adult external features similar to those of the subgenus Ctenempis, but the male genital and pregenital segments are much simpler than in Ctenempis, and the female cerci are much short and stout, furnished with short strong thorn-like bristles, quite unique character state in the genus.

The dipteran family Rhinophoridae is recorded for the first time from Japan. Acompomintho lobata VILLENEUVE, 1927 is recorded from Ryukyu Islands, and Oplisa japonica sp. n. is described from Kyushu and southern Honshu. A key is provided to identify both species of Rhinophoridae and to separate these from other Japanese members of the Tachinidae family-group (Oestroidea).

Two new myrmecophilous pselaphid species, Tribasodites picticornis from Okinawa Is. and Batraxis splendida from Iriomote Is. are described. The new species are captured in the colonies of Paratrechina flavipes and Brachyponera chinensis, respectively. The genera Tribasodites and Batraxis are new to Japan.

Euprosopia matsudai sp. nov. is described and figured from Japan with the key to the three allied species, E. longifacies HENDEL (from Formosa), E. grahami MALLOCH (from Japan), and E. aureovestita FREY (from India). Platystoma japonicum HORI is synonymized with E. grahami.

The thirty-five species belonging to 11 genera of Japanese Sepsidae are reviewed with a comprehensive key for identification. Themira kanoi is described as new to science : this species is identical with T. paludosa sensu IWASA, nec Elberg. A formerly known species, Themira nigricornis MEIGEN is proven to be T. lutulenta OZEROV. Ortalischema maritima OZEROV and Sepsis bicornuta OZEROV are newly recorded from Japan.

Antocha (Proantocha) serricauda ALEXANDER, 1924, and Antocha (Proantocha) quadrivittata (ALEXANDER, 1932) are synonymized under Antocha (Proantocha) spinifer ALEXANDER, 1919, on the basis of the observation on the holotypes and 236 males and 186 females of this species collected in various localities of Japan. Male and female of A. (P.) spinifer are redescribed and figured. A. (P.) spinifer is newly recorded from Kyushu.
