ミジングモ属 (Dipoena) 3種の捕獲していたアリの種, サイズ, 個体数を調査した. シモフリミジングモ D. punctisparsa は比較的小型のケアリ属を専食し, 大型の個体は一度に多数のアリを捕獲する傾向がみられた. ボカシミジングモ D. castrata の餌はケアリ属とオオアリ属が中心で, ほとんどが単数のアリを捕獲していた. 本種は成長にともない, 大きいアリを捕らえる傾向があった. カニミジングモ D. mustelina は非常に小型の種から大型の種までさまざまな種のアリを捕獲していた.

ムツトゲイセキグモは日本にいる稀産の2種のナゲナワグモ類のうちのひとつである. 本報告は, 野外におけるムツトゲイセキグモの生活史, 若令幼体がもちいる餌捕獲法, および本種のメス成体や亜成体がもちいる「投げ縄」網の作成行動についてのはじあての観察記録である. ムツトゲイセキグモは年一世代の多回 (3-6回) 産卵のクモであり, ふ化した幼体は卵のう内でそのまま越冬した. 若令幼体とオスは投げ縄を使わず, 葉の縁で狩りをしていると考えられた. 亜成体と成体のメスは蛾を捕獲するために投げ縄を使用した. 投げ縄作成行動は, 投げ縄を第1脚のかわりに第2脚でもつ以外はナゲナワグモ属のものとまったく同一だった. ときどき, 2個の粘球がついた投げ縄を作ることがあった.

In Japan, the generic name Scolioplanes has been applied to a group of Geophilidae ever since, but the author holds the same view with CRABILL JR. and other European authors who have been using Strigamia instead of Scolioplanes for the genus. Two new species S. platydentata spec. nov. and S. bicolor spec. nov. are described here.

ジョロウグモとオオジョロウグモの網構造を比較した。両種の幼体の網は barrier web (迷網) の形状を除き同じ構造であり, その主網は普通の円網に似ていた。一方, 両種の雌成体の網にはいくつかの点で違いがみられた。すなわち, ジョロウグモの網はオオジョロウグモにくらべて非相称性がより強く, ジョロウグモの網には分枝•二分割糸•迷網が認められた。しかし, オオジョロウグモでは二分割糸と迷網は認められなかったが分枝は存在していた。そして, これらの違いからジョロウグモの方がオオジョロウグモに比較してより特殊化しており, ジョロウグモ属のクモは円網を張っていたクモを祖先として, それから派生してきたと考えられた。

A new species of the genus Wendilgarda is described as Wendilgarda ruficeps sp. nov. from Japan. Both sexes of this species possess a bicolor body: prosoma reddish orange and opithosoma dark grey, which is useful for distinction from other congeners. The male palpal morphology of this species is similar to that of W. sinensis and W. muji, but can clearly be distinguished by the serrated edge on the posterior side of the median apophysis. The female epigyne of this species is similar to that of W. sinensis; however, it shows the smaller invagination on the posterior margin of the epigyne and the wider scape.

We surveyed habitats of an endangered burrowing wolf spider Lycosa ishikariana (Saito 1934) along the San'in coast of Tottori and Shimane Prefectures, southwestern Honshu, Japan. The species was found from eight sites covering seven different beaches from Inasa Beach (Izumo City) in the east to Toda Beach (Masuda City) in the west in Shimane Prefecture for the first time. This extends the southwestern limit of the species' range ca. 160 km westward from the Yumigahama Beach of Tottori Prefecture, the present southernmost record. In the coast of Tottori Prefecture, the species was found from 17 sites that exceed known number of records in the area. The apparent increase of the number of habitats of the species in Tottori Prefecture is probably due to a shift of survey season from the mid summer to June when density of the burrows culminates by the recruit of newly hatched spiderlings. Simple logistic regression analyses suggested that presence/absence of the species is related to any of the sand grain sizes, sorting indices, areas, lengths and maximum widths of the sandy beaches, though a multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that beach areas and sand grain size were the most significant factors. According to the models obtained, requirements for the occurrence of species were estimated to be areas>0.0313 km2 (total length>985 m, width>60 m) of sandy beach, and sand grain diameter>0.33 mm.

Araneus is a large genus containing many species with various features, and phylogenetic analysis has revealed it to be a polyphyletic group. It has been proposed that nine new genera should be established independently from Araneus. One example is a group that includes Araneus mitificus (Simon 1886) and Araneus praesignis (L. Koch 1872). In this study, we examined specimens from several species that are morphologically similar to them, and confirmed their close relationship by phylogenetic analysis using the data of five genes. All targeted species were united in a monophyletic clade, comprising two groups in detail. The epigynes and male palps of the species in these two groups were clearly distinguishable; therefore, we concluded that they should be recognized as two independent genera. Consequently, we describe two new genera, Aoaraneus n. gen. and Bijoaraneus n. gen. Additionally, previously identified Japanese Araneus mitificus specimens were reexamined and concluded to be misidentified. It is described as a new species under the name Bijoaraneus komachi n. sp. in this study.

The Taiwanese and Japanese spiders which have been identified with Cyrtophora moluccensis (Doreshall 1857) are taxonomically revised. Three color morphs, yellow-, green-, and red-types, show their own discrete monophyletic clades in the phylogenetic tree inferred by Neighbor Joining method using the partial sequences of mt-16S-rRNA genes. P-distances within group means are 0.2% in the yellow-type, 0.1% in the green-type, and 0% in the red-type. P-distances between group means are 18.8% between yellow- and green-types, 19.4% between yellow- and red-types, 10% between green- and red-types. These three color morphs can be separated also by the shapes of epigynum and male palp. Consequently we recognize them as three independent nominal species and determined the yellow-type as C. cylindroides (Walckenaer 1842), the green-type as C. moluccensis (Doleschall 1857), and the red-type as C. ikomosanensis (Bösenberg & Strand 1906).

A pseudoscorpion was found in the underfur of a feral raccoon (Procyon lotor) captured in western Tokyo in December 2019. Based on the morphological features, we identified the specimen as Haplochernes sp. This arboreal pseudoscorpion rides other arthropods and small mammals for dispersion, but little is known that the species rides medium-sized mammals such as raccoons. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of Haplochernes sp. riding a feral raccoon. Given that raccoons are an invasive species in Japan, further records of pseudoscorpions riding feral raccoons may elucidate the relationship between feral raccoons and pseudoscorpions.

In this short paper, we report the predation of an orb-weaving spider Neoscona sp. (Araneae: Araneidae) by a corinnid sac spider Corinnomma severum (Araneae: Corinnidae) from Thailand. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of predation of web-building spider by a spider of the genus Corinnomma observed in the field.

網のデザインと餌捕獲能力との関係をジョロウグモとナガコガネグモを用いて調べた. 大型の厚紙のフレームでクモの網を枠取りし, 同じ微生息場所に設置した. ジョロウグモの網はナガコガネグモの網より多くの餌がかかる傾向があったが, これは前種で粘着糸が多いからである. しかし, 比較的大きな餌 (2-6mm) の比率はナガコガネグモの方が大きかった. これはおそらく網糸に付着している粘着物質の量が多いからであろう. 大型の餌 (20-25mm) に対する網の捕捉能力を評価するため, 大型餌を網に付加する実験を行った. 餌が網に捕えられている時間は, ばらつきが大きいものの種間で似かよっていた. ジョロウグモの網は, 非常に小型の餌とともに大型の餌を捕獲する機能も有していると考えられた.

A new araneid species Zygiella hiramatsui n. sp. is described using specimens obtained from Amami-ôshima Island, Japan. This species can be distinguished from allied Z. dispar by the much wider median area of the epigyne, or an unnamed apophysis neighboring the embolus that is short and truncated and a horn shaped apophysis of the tegulum in the male palp. It is uncommon for Zygiella spiders to inhabit subtropical regions, but this is the case for Z. hiramatsui n. sp. So it might be introduced previously into Amami-ôshima Is. from unknown habitat.

樹上生活性カニムシであるトゲヤドリカニムシ Haplochernes boncicus KARSCH の生活場所および生活史について調査し, 以下に示すような結果が得られた。1) 本種はスギ, ヒノキ, ときにはアカマツなどの乾燥した樹皮下に生息する。他の昆虫などに食害された樹皮よりも清潔で滑らかな樹皮の間隙に多い。老木の方が若木よりも好まれる。2) 寿命は4年あるいは5年以上と推定され, 第一若虫から第三若虫までは各一年, 成虫は1, 2年あるいはそれ以上生きるものと推測される。3) 脱皮時期は7~8月である。縦に長く横に短かい楕円形の巣の中で脱皮する。4) 繁殖期は7~8月である。抱卵雌は営巣せず, 巣にかわるものとして糸を敷きつめた“抱卵床 (brood-bed)” をつくる。抱卵床の大きさは平均して長径6.47mm短径3.98mmであった。雌1個体の産卵数は平均12-13個体であった。

Spiders in the genus Cyrtophora Simon, 1864 often incorporate debris and egg sacs in their webs. Based on a survey of online digital imagery, I report here that at least three species in this genus also include silk decorations: C. cylindroides (Walckenaer 1841), C. ikomosanensis (Bösenberg & Strand 1906), and C. moluccensis (Doleschall 1857). These species lay single to multiple zigzagging silk strips in an arcuate, looping, or spiral pattern often centred about the web’s hub. However, small juveniles and males installed scattered floc-like silk in the barrier strands below the web. The most commonly observed decorator, C. moluccensis, displayed the devices in only 13.9% of observed webs (n = 465), lower than most other silk-decorating spiders. The discovery of novel spider behaviour and web structure is considerably aided by online databases of natural-history observations.

The types of four Oxyopes species kept in the British Musuem (Natural History), London and the National Zoological collection, Zoological Survey of India (Kolkata) are reexamined. Three new synonyms are recognized: Oxyopes nilgiricus Sherriffs 1955 syn. nov., O. pankaji Gajbe & Gajbe 2000 syn. nov. and O. ratnae Tikader 1970 syn. nov. with O. hindostanicus Pocock 1901. The updated distribution of O. hindostanicus is mapped with records from several new localities from India and Sri Lanka.
