A novel displacement sensor was proposed based on a frequency delta-sigma modulator (FDSM) employing a microwave oscillator. To demonstrate basic operation, we fabricated a stylus surface profiler using a cylindrical cavity resonator, where one end of the cavity is replaced by a thin metal diaphragm with a stylus probe tip. Good surface profile was successfully obtained with this device. A 10 nm depth trench was clearly observed together with a 10 µm trench in a single scan without gain control. This result clearly demonstrates an extremely wide dynamic range of the FDSM displacement sensors.

Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is a promising lightweight hardware security primitive that can extract device fingerprints for encryption or authentication. However, extracting fingerprints from either the chip or the board individually has security flaws and cannot provide hardware system-level security. This paper proposes a new Chip-PCB hybrid PUF(CPR PUF) in which Weak PUF on PCB is combined with Strong PUF inside the chip to generate massive responses under the control of challenges of on-chip Strong PUF. This structure tightly couples the chip and PCB into an inseparable and unclonable unit thus can verify the authenticity of chip as well as the board. To improve the uniformity and reliability of Chip-PCB hybrid PUF, we propose a lightweight key generator based on a reliability self-test and debiasing algorithm to extract massive stable and secure keys from unreliable and biased PUF responses, which eliminates expensive error correction processes. The FPGA-based test results show that the PUF responses after robust extraction and debiasing achieve high uniqueness, reliability, uniformity and anti-counterfeiting features. Moreover, the key generator greatly reduces the execution cost and the bit error rate of the keys is less than 10-9, the overall security of the key is also improved by eliminating the entropy leakage of helper data.

This paper presents a hippocampal cognitive prosthesis chip designed for restoring the ability to form new long-term memories due to hippocampal system damage. The system-on-chip (SOC) consists of a 16-channel micro-power low-noise amplifier (LNA), high-pass filters, analog-digital converters (ADCs), a 16-channel spike-sorter, a generalized Laguerre-Volterra model multi-input, multi-output (GLVM-MIMO) hippocampal processor, an 8-channel neural stimulator and peripheral circuits. The proposed LNA achieved a voltage gain of 50dB, input-referred noise of 3.95µVrms, and noise efficiency factor (NEF) of 3.45 with the power consumption of 3.3µW. High-pass filters with a 300-Hz bandwidth are used to filter out the unwanted local field potential (LFP). 4 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADCs with a signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 63.37dB are designed for the digitization of the neural signals. A 16-channel spike-sorter has been integrated in the chip enabling a detection accuracy of 98.3% and a classification accuracy of 93.4% with power consumption of 19µW/ch. The MIMO hippocampal model processor predict output spatio-temporal patterns in CA1 according to the recorded input spatio-temporal patterns in CA3. The neural stimulator performs bipolar, symmetrical charge-balanced stimulation with a maximum current of 310µA, triggered by the processor output. The chip has been fabricated in 40nm standard CMOS technology, occupying a silicon area of 3mm2.

Thin films of Teflon AF 1600 were prepared by an electron-assisted (e-assist) deposition method. IR analysis revealed that the e-assist deposition generates small amount of polar groups such as carboxylic acid in the molecular structure of the deposited films. The polar groups contributed to increase intermolecular interaction and led to remarkable improvement in the adhesion strength and robustness of the films especially when a bias voltage was applied to the substrate in the course of e-assist deposition. The vapor-deposited Teflon AF films had refractive indices of 1.35 to 1.38, and were effective for antireflection coatings. The use of e-assist deposition slightly increased the refractive index as a trade-off for the improvement of film robustness.

In this paper, the planar subarray structure to be optimized by using random search method for large active array antenna is presented. Although MPSL of the optimized subarray structure is 1.09dB higher, G/T of the optimized subarray structure is 2.07dB higher than the reference subarray structure.

This article presents a 28GHz high-accuracy phase and amplitude detection circuit for dual-polarized phased-array calibration. With dual-polarized calibration scheme, external LO signal is not required for calibration. The proposed detection circuit detects phase and amplitude independently, using PDC and ADC. By utilizing a 28GHz-to-140kHz downconversion scheme, the phase and amplitude are detected more accurately. In addition, reference signal for PDC and ADC is generated from 28GHz LO signal with divide-by-6 dual-step-mixing injection locked frequency divider (ILFD). This ILFD achieves 24.5-32.5GHz (28%) locking range with only 3.0mW power consumption and 0.01mm2 area. In the measurement, the detection circuit achieves phase and amplitude detections with RMS errors of 0.17degree and 0.12dB, respectively. The total power consumption of the proposed circuit is 59mW with 1-V supply voltage.

This paper first introduces the structure of a shipboard equipment control cabinet and the preliminary design of electromagnetic shielding, then introduces the principle of low-frequency magnetic field shielding, and uses silicon steel sheet to shield the low-frequency magnetic field of shipboard equipment control equipment. Based on ANSYS Maxwell simulation software, the low-frequency magnetic field radiation emission of the equipment's conducted harmonic peak frequency point is simulated. Finally, according to MIL-STD-461G test standard, the low-frequency magnetic field radiation emission test is carried out, which meets the limit requirements of the standard. The low-frequency magnetic field shielding technology has practical value. The low-frequency magnetic field radiation emission simulation based on ANSYS Maxwell proposed in this paper is a useful attempt for the quantitative simulation of radiation emission.

This paper proposes a low-power 100Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation driver (PAM-4 Driver) based on linear distortion compensation structure for thin-film Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) modulators, which manages to achieve high linearity in the output. The inductive peaking technology and open drain structure enable the overall circuit to achieve a 31-GHz bandwidth. With an area of 0.292 mm2, the proposed PAM-4 driver chip is designed in a 65-nm process to achieve power consumption of 37.7 mW. Post-layout simulation results show that the power efficiency is 0.37 mW/Gb/s, RLM is more than 96%, and the FOM value is 8.84.

This paper presents a novel frequency-controlled beam steering scheme for a phased-array antenna system (PAS). The proposed scheme employs phase-controlled carrier signals to form the PAS beam. Two local oscillators (LOs) and delay lines are used to generate the carrier signals. The carrier of one LO is divided into branches, and then the divided carriers passing through the corresponding delay lines have the desired phase relationship, which depends on the oscillation frequency of the LO. To confirm the feasibility of the scheme, four-branch PAS transmitters are configured and tested in a 10-GHz frequency band. The results verify that the formed beam is successfully steered in a wide range, i.e., the 3-dB beamwidth of approximately 100 degrees, using LO frequency control.

In order to increase communication capacity, the use of millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave bands are being actively explored. Non-radiative dielectric waveguide known as NRD guide is one of promising platform of millimeter-wave integrated circuits thanks to its non-radiative and low loss nature. In order to develop millimeter wave circuits with various functions, various circuit components have to be efficiently designed to meet requirements from application side. In this paper, for efficient design of NRD guide devices, we develop a topology optimal design technique based on function-expansion-method which can express arbitrary structure with arbitrary geometric topology. In the present approach, recently developed two-dimensional full-vectorial finite element method (2D-FVFEM) for NRD guide devices is employed to improve computational efficiency and several evolutionary approaches, which do not require appropriate initial structure depending on a given design problem, are used to optimize design variables, thus, NRD guide devices having desired functions are efficiently obtained without requiring designer's special knowledge.

This paper describes an in-depth analysis of crosstalk in a high-bandwidth 3D-stacked memory using a multi-hop inductive coupling interface and proposes two countermeasures. This work analyzes the crosstalk among seven stacked chips using a 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulator. The detailed analysis reveals two main crosstalk sources: concentric coils and adjacent coils. To suppress these crosstalks, this paper proposes two corresponding countermeasures: shorted coils and 8-shaped coils. The combination of these coils improves area efficiency by a factor of 4 in simulation. The proposed methods enable an area-efficient inductive coupling interface for high-bandwidth stacked memory.

This paper proposes constant voltage design based on K-inverter for cooperative inductive power transfer (IPT) where a nearby receiver picks up power and simultaneously cooperates in relaying the signal toward another distant receiver. In a cooperative IPT system, wireless power is fundamentally transferred to the nearby receiver via one K-inverter and to the distant receiver via two K-inverters. By adding one more K-inverter to the nearby receiver, our design is among the simplest methods as it delivers constant output voltage to each receiver via two K-inverters only. Experimental results verify that the proposed cooperative IPT system can stabilize two output voltages against the load variations while attaining high RF-RF efficiency of 90%.

This paper proposes novel test techniques for high accuracy measurement of ADCs and a ramp generator on a CMOS image sensor (CIS) chip. The test circuit for the ADCs has a dual path and has an ability of multi-functional fine pattern generator that can define any input for each column to evaluate CIS specific characteristics electrically. The test circuit for the ramp generator can realize an on-chip current cell test and reject the current cell failure within 1LSB accuracy. We fabricated the test sensor using 55nm CIS process and measured the IP characteristics. Measured results show INL of 14.6LSB, crosstalk of 14.9LSB and column interference noise of 5.4LSB. These measured results agree with the designed values. By using this technique, we confirmed the accurate ADC measurement can be realized without being affected by the ambiguity of the optical input.

The most commonly used scattering parameters (S parameters) are normalized to a real reference resistance, typically 50Ω. In some cases, the use of S parameters normalized to some complex reference impedance is essential or convenient. But there are different definitions of complex-referenced S parameters that are incompatible with each other and serve different purposes. To make matters worse, different simulators implement different ones and which ones are implemented is rarely properly documented. What are possible scenarios in which using the right one matters? This tutorial-style paper is meant as an informal and not overly technical exposition of some such confusing aspects of S parameters, for those who have a basic familiarity with the ordinary, real-referenced S parameters.

A method for the calibration of S11 at the front surface of a material for a coaxial-feed type cut-off circular waveguide with three reference materials inserted and no short termination condition was proposed as a preliminary step for dielectric measurement in liquids. The equations for jig calibration of S11 with these reference materials were first defined, and the electrostatic capacitance for the analytical model unique to the jig was quantified by substituting the reflection constant (calculated at frequencies of 0.50, 1.5 and 3.0 GHz using the mode-matching (MM) technique) into the equivalent circuit, assuming the sample liquid in the jig. The accuracy of S11 measured using the proposed method was then verified. S11 for the front surface of the sample material was also measured with various liquids in the jig after calibration, and the dielectric constants of the liquids were estimated as an inverse problem based on comparison of S11 calculated from an analytical model using EM analysis via the MM technique with the measured S11 values described above. The effectiveness of the proposed S11 calibration method was verified by comparison with dielectric constants estimated after S11 SOM (short, open and reference material) calibration and similar, with results showing favorable agreement with each method.

Timing fault detection techniques address the problems caused by increased variations on a chip, especially with dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). The Razor flip-flop (FF) is a timing fault detection technique that employs double sampling by the main and shadow FFs. In order for the Razor FF to correctly detect a timing fault, not the main FF but the shadow FF must sample the correct value. The application of Razor FFs to static logic relaxes the timing constraints; however, the naive application of Razor FFs to dynamic precharged logic such as SRAM read circuits is not effective. This is because the SRAM precharge cannot start before the shadow FF samples the value; otherwise, the transition of the bitline of the SRAM stops and the value sampled by the shadow FF will be incorrect. Therefore, the detect period cannot overlap the precharge period. This paper proposes a novel application of Razor FFs to SRAM read circuits. Our proposal employs a conditional precharge according to the value of a bitline sampled by the main FF. This enables the detect period to overlap the precharge period, thereby relaxing the timing constraints. The additional circuit required by this method is simple and only needed around the sense amplifier, and there is no need for a clock delayed from the system clock. Consequently, the area overhead of the proposed circuit is negligible. This paper presents SPICE simulations of the proposed circuit. Our proposal reduces the minimum cycle time by 51.5% at a supply voltage of 1.1 V and the minimum voltage by 31.8% at cycle time of 412.5 ps.

Kirchhoff approximation (KA) method has been applied for ray-mode conversion to analyze the plane wave scattering by conducting thick slits. The scattering fields can be considered as field radiations from equivalent magnetic current sources assumed by closing the aperture of the slit. The obtained results are compared with those of other methods to validate the accuracy of the proposed formulation in different conditions of slit dimension.

At the present time, as downsizing of connectors causes thin gold plated layer and low contact load, serious problem of degradation of contact resistance property is induced. For these contacts, corrosion of the contacts surface under environment and high temperature as soldering and reflow process should be existed. Oxidation of base metal atoms which are diffused from under layer and additives occurs. Contact resistance increases for both surface contamination and low contact load. In order to resolve these problems and wear of surface, application of contact lubricants is useful and effective. However, degradation of the lubricants under such reflow process as high temperature possibly occurs. Therefore, in this study, from view point of change of lubricant quality as viscosity, weight loss, polymerization, oxidation and molecular orientation were clarified. For increase in contact resistance, orientation of lubricant molecular acts as important factor was found. The other factors of the lubricant hardly does not effect on contact resistance.

Short gap arc V-I characteristics are essential to discussions on behavior of contact arc at opening and closing. From this point of view, some conventional arc V-I characteristics were reviewed and inconvenient points of them for practical use were pointed out : (1) not a few electrode-material-dependent constants needed in the equation of V-I relation, (2) difficulty in the prediction of real arc extinction phenomena. In order to overcome these inconveniences, the author measured short gap arc V-I characteristics originally, and tried to formulate them into a simple form on the assumption that the arc column V-I characteristics are little dependent on electrode materials but the unstable arc region is strongly dependent on electrode materials. Measured arc column voltage was directly proportional to the square root of gap length and inversely proportional to the cube root of arc current. Arc became unstable when arc current decreased near to the value generally known as the minimum arc current. It was not necessarily the case that the arc extinguished completely at the minimum arc current, but, depending on the circuit conditions, the arc often existed discontinuously below the so-called minimum arc current. Simple empirical V-I characteristics were proposed for practical use, together with the unstable arc region as the information for arc extinction phenomena.
