Effects of rice bran oil on the oxidative and flavor stability of fish oil were investigated by the gas liquid chromatography-head space method. When fish oil blending with different ratio of rice bran oils was oxidized at room temperature in the dark, volatile compounds produced during autoxidation was measured by gas liquid chromatography. The amounts of volatile compounds were decreased with increased the ratio of blended rice bran oil as well as peroxide value. The level of propanal and acrolein which gave unpleasant flavor was also decreased with increased the ratio of blended rice bran oil. Especially, the level of propanal and acrolein and peroxide value were remarkably decreased when blending more than 75% of rice bran oil. Blending of rice bran oil improved the oxidative and flavor stabilities of fish oil.

Squalene (SQ), a main component of human sebum, is readily photooxidized by exposure to sunlight, producing six squalene monohydroperoxide (SQ-OOH) isomers. Despite its known connection to various skin conditions, few studies have sought to analyze SQ-OOH at the isomeric level. In this study, we aimed to develop a method to discriminate each SQ-OOH isomer with the use of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The six standard SQ-OOH isomers were prepared by photooxidizing SQ in the presence of rose bengal, a photosensitizer, and isolated by semipreparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To purify each isomer, 2-methoxypropene, which reversibly reacts with the hydroperoxide group of SQ-OOH, was utilized. Product ion scanning was then performed on the standard SQ-OOH isomers in the absence and presence of the sodium ion. In the absence of the sodium ion, the fragmentation patterns produced by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization were similar between the isomers, whereas in the presence of the sodium ion by electrospray ionization, unique fragmentation patterns were achieved. Based on these fragment ions, HPLC-MS/MS multiple reaction monitoring analysis was conducted on a mixture of the standard SQ-OOH isomers. We achieved discrimination of SQ-OOH isomers with high selectivity and detected SQ-OOH isomers at nanogram levels. These results may improve our understanding of the effect of SQ-OOH on skin conditions as well as the mechanism behind SQ peroxidation.

Palmitoleic acid is a promising bactericidal agent for cleansing products with alternative bactericidal abilities. In this study, we focus on the physical and biological activity of palmitoleic acid calcium salt (C16:1 fatty acid Ca salt) because it forms via an ion-exchange reaction between palmitoleic acid and Ca ions in tap water, and remains on the skin surface during the cleansing process. Here, we prepared C16:1 fatty acid Ca salt to investigate its crystal structure and physical and bactericidal properties. The Ca salt was a plate-shaped lamellar crystalline powder with a particle diameter of several micrometers to several tens of micrometers; it exhibited significant lubricity and alternative bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). We also examined other fatty acid Ca salts prepared from lauric acid (C12:0 fatty acid), palmitic acid (C16:0 fatty acid), and oleic acid (C18:1 fatty acid). The bactericidal activities and lubricity of the fatty acid Ca salts changed with the alkyl chain length and the degree of unsaturation. The C16:1 fatty acid Ca salt exhibited the strongest selective bactericidal ability among the four investigated fatty acid Ca salts. These findings suggest that C16:1 fatty acid and its Ca salt have potential applications in cleansing and cosmetic products.

In this study, the chemical composition and anti-inflammatory activities of hydrodistilled essential oil from Farfugium japonicum were investigated for the first time. The chemical constituents of the essential oil were further analyzed by GC-MS and included 1-undecene (22.43%), 1-nonene (19.83%), β-caryophyllene (12.26%), α-copaene (3.70%), γ-curcumene (2.86%), germacrene D (2.69%), and 1-decene (2.08%). The effects of the essential oil on nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages were also examined. The results indicate that the F. japonicum essential oil is an effective inhibitor of LPS-induced NO and PGE2 production in RAW 264.7 cells. These inhibitory effects of the F. japonicum essential oil were accompanied by dose-dependent decreases in the iNOS and COX-2 mRNA expression. In order to determine whether F. japonicum essential oil can safely be applied to human skin, the cytotoxic effects of F. japonicum essential oil were determined by colorimetric MTT assays in human dermal fibroblast and keratinocyte HaCaT cells. F. japonicum essential oil exhibited low cytotoxicity at 100 μg/mL. Based on these results, we suggest that F. japonicum essential oil may be considered a potential anti-inflammatory candidate for topical application.

Imidazoline surfactants belong to the category of cationic surfactants. Cationic surfactants are often quaternary nitrogen salts and are widely used both in non aqueous systems and in applications such as textile softeners, dispersants and emulsifiers. In the class of imidazoline compounds there is a presence of a pendant group, an imidazoline head group and a hydrocarbon tail. This paper reviews the imidazoline and its salts as an emerging class of cationic surfactants. It deals with the synthesis, various properties that prove its use in laundry detergent applications like good detergency, resiliency, foaming property, softening property, rewettability, good storage stability and less irritating property. In addition the film forming and corrosion inhibition properties tend them to varied and numerous industrial applications.

The physicochemical properties, fatty acid profiles, content of tocopherol and sterol of the oils extracted from the nuts of Elaeagnus mollis Diels grown in different regions of China were studied in this work. The results indicated that the Elaeagnus mollis Diels nut oils contained about 0.2% sterols and the tocopherol contents were in the range of 119.6-128.6mg/100g. The nut oils were all rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid and linoleic acid. Furthermore, the main triacylglycerols species of the nut oils were all dilinoleoyl-monoolein (LOL), dioleoyl-monolinoleoyl (OLO) and trilinoleate (LLL). This work might be useful for developing applications for Elaeagnus mollis Diels nut oil.

The accumulation (incorporation) of paprika carotenoid in human plasma and erythrocytes was investigated. A paprika carotenoid supplement (14 mg/day) was ingested for 4 weeks by 5 young healthy volunteers (3 men and 2 women). After 2 weeks of carotenoid ingestion, the carotenoid levels in plasma and erythrocytes increased by 1.2-fold and 2.2-fold, respectively. Characteristic carotenoids found in paprika (capsanthin, cucurbitaxanthin A, and cryptocapsin) were detected in both plasma and erythrocytes. An oxidative metabolite of capsanthin (capsanthone) was also found in both plasma and erythrocytes.

Enterococcus faecalis is one of the major lactic acid bacterium (LAB) species colonizing the intestines of animals and humans. The characteristic odor of the volatile oils obtained from both the liquid medium after incubation (MAI) and liquid medium before incubation (MBI) in the cultivation process of E. faecalis was investigated to determine the utility of the liquid medium. In total, fifty-six and thirty-two compounds were detected in the volatile oils from the MAI (MAI oil) and MBI (MBI oil), respectively. The principle components of MAI oil were 2,5-dimethylpyrazine (19.3%), phenylacetaldehyde (19.3%), and phenylethyl alcohol (9.3%). The aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) method was performed using gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). The total number of aroma-active compounds identified in the volatile oil from MBI and MAI was thirteen compounds; in particular, 5-methyl-2-furanmethanol, phenylacetaldehyde, and phenylethyl alcohol were the most primary aroma-active compounds in MAI oil. These results imply that the industrial cultivation medium after incubation of E. faecalis may be utilized as a source of volatile oils.

The combination method of high performance liquid chromatography / UV-Visible (Vis) absorption spectrometry by photodiode-array detector and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC/PAD/APCI-MS) were applied for the rapid identification of carotenoids obtained from several natural sources. APCI-MS spectra provided not only information of the molecule weight but also the presence of functional groups such as hydroxy, acetyl and glycosyl groups in carotenoids. On the other hand, UV-Vis spectra gave the information of chromophores which consist of the conjugated double bonds and end groups in carotenoids. This combination method allows the carotenoids to be characterized by retention time in HPLC, APCI-MS and UV-Vis spectral data so that it offers rapid and accurate method for the identification of carotenoids extracted from various natual sources.

Clove bud essential oil (CEO) and its major individual phenolic constituent eugenol were formulated as nanoparticles in water-based microemulsion systems. The oil titration method was used to incorporate different amounts of the oil and eugenol in the micellar solution of Tween-20. The Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were evaluated using the DPPH* free radical scavenging assay and the agar disc dilution method, respectively. Results showed that microemulsion improved the evaluated activities of CEO and eugenol compared with the crude counterparts. Individual eugenol microemulsion was more effective than CEO microemulsion which contained only 61.7% eugenol among its constituents. The results of this study could have potential applications in water-based disinfectants, preservation and flavoring of food and in personal hygiene products. It may also have promising applications in the nutraceutical and functional beverage field.

The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of cerebrosides derived from the sea cucumber Acaudina molpadioides and the starfish Asterias amurensis on the anti-tumor activity in vitro and in vivo. The results indicated that both Acaudina molpadioides cerebrosides (AMC) and Asterias amurensis cerebrosides (AAC) exhibited an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation through induction of apoptosis in S180 cells. Moreover, administration of AMC and AAC (50 mg/kg BW) on S180 tumor bearing mice reduced the tumor weight by 45.24 % and 35.71 %, respectively. In S180 ascites tumor model, AMC and AAC (50 mg/kg BW) treatment exhibited a significant ascites fluid growth inhibition of 31.23 % and 22.72 %. Furthermore, the ascites tumor cell viability ratio in AMC and AAC groups reduced to 50.89 % and 51.69 %, respectively. The life span of AMC and AAC administrated groups increased by 55.28 % and 35.77 % compared to control. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis demonstrated that the administration of AMC and AAC down-regulated the expression of Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, while on the other hand, up-regulated Bax, Cytochrome c, caspase-9 and caspase-3 mRNA level of the S180 ascites tumor cells. It was concluded that AMC and AAC should have potential anti-tumor activity both in vitro and in vivo by inducing apoptosis through the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis pathway. AAC seemed to be more effective than AMC in vitro but less potent in vivo. It may depend on the structural differences in their fatty acid groups and sphingoid bases.

A novel sulfated glycosphingolipid, SGL-1, was isolated from the ascidian Ciona intestinalis, prepared from chloroform/methanol extracts and fractionated successively on DEAE Sephadex-A25, Florisil and Iatrobeads column chromatographies. Chemical structural analysis was performed using methylation analysis, gas-liquid chromatography, combined gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. This chemical structure is presented as GlcCer I6-Sulfate. The ceramide moiety was specified by t16:0, t17:0, br,t17:0, t18:0 and br,t18:0 as sphingoids, and 2-hydroxy, saturated fatty acids as represented by docosanoic and tetracosanoic acids.

The elastomer materials with hieralchical structure and suitable wettability are useful as biological surface model. In the present study, urethane resin and silicone resin elastomers with hierarchical rough surfaces were prepared and referred to as “fractal elastomers”. We found a hierarchy of small projections that existed over larger ones on these surfaces. These elastomers were synthesized by transferring a fractal surface structure of alkylketene dimer. The rough structure enhanced the hydrophobicity and weakened friction resistance of the elastomer surfaces. These materials can be useful for artificial skin with biomimetic surface properties.

This article reports about the presence of some of the components of minor fraction of virgin olive oils, polyphenols and tocopherols, in several of the VOO varieties from Extremadura. The relationship between both classes of compounds and the oxidative stability of the oils is also examined. The levels of total phenols, α, β, and γ tocopherols showed significant differences (p<0.05) among the different varieties. The concentration of total phenolic compounds varied from 130 to 1203 mg/kg. The α-tocopherol was the most representative in the seven varieties (95.97 %) and ranged from (288 - 170) to (485 - 244) mg/kg in the Morisca and Carrasqueña varieties respectively. On the other hand, a positive high lineal correlation was observed between oxidative stability and studied along the maturity of the fruit and the total phenolic compounds (natural antioxidants) (r2>0.90; p<0.05), α-tocopherol (r2>0.85; p<0.05), β-tocopherol (r2>0.70; p<0.05) and total-tocopherols (r2>0.87; p<0.05), in all the olive oils obtained from the seven varieties of olive from Extremadura. It is noticeable that α-tocopherol fraction contributed equally to the oxidative stability of all the VOO whereas the largest contribution was provided by the oil phenolic fraction, as it was the case of the Carrasqueña variety.

A new quantification method for triglyceride (TG) molecular species contained in fish oil was developed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-ultraviolet detector (UV) system. In this experiment, triacontyl silane column and a mixture of alcohol and acetonitrile were used for column and mobile phase, respectively. Fifteen kinds of TG molecular species exist in fish oil were collected and the calibration curves monitored at 210nm were acquired for each TG molecular species. Also, evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD), widely used for the detection of fish oil TG molecular species, was tandem jointed after UV to compare the calibration curves for each TG molecular species. As the results, the calibration curves by UV with isocratic elution system were linear lines, on the contrary, those by ELSD were not linear. The slope of each calibration curve by UV was not the same and there was a tendency that TG molecular species having big partition number indicates a small slope calibration curve. The HPLC-UV with gradient system was also examined, but a few of standard TGs did not provide linear calibration curve. Consequently, we concluded that isocratic HPLC-UV system would be an available method for the quantification of TG molecular species in fish oil.

This paper reports the ecotoxicological study of "tetradecanoic acid, 2-sulfo-, 1-methylester, sodium salt (C14MES)". This salt was synthesized by sulfonating 1-methyl tetradecanoic acid derived from palm oil and coconut oil with sulfur trioxide. The tests were attempted in accordance with the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals. The 72 h ErC<sub>50</sub> exceeded 100 mg/L in the alga growth inhibition test. In the daphnia acute immobilization and reproduction tests, 17.2 mg/L of 48 h EC<sub>50</sub> and 4.10 mg/L of NOEC were derived, respectively. These ecotoxicities of C14MES were equivalent to or lower than that of other similar anionic surfactants, such as LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) or AOS (alpha olefin sulfonate).<br>

The aquatic risk of 2-sulfonato fatty acid methyl ester sodium salt (MES) used in household detergents was assessed. The environmental exposure assessment expressed as predicted environmental concentration (PEC) was determined on the basis of monitoring results from the seven sites of four rivers in the urban area in Tokyo and Osaka. The 95 percentile as well as geometric mean of the MES concentration was found to exhibit a good correlation with the geometric mean of the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD; the latter's regression was grater than 0.99). The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) for the aquatic environment was estimated by performing chronic assays of algae and daphnia. The risk characterization ratio (RCR: PEC/PNEC) was less than 1. Therefore, it is concluded that MES will not adversely affect the aquatic environment in Japan.<br>

A new iridoid glycoside, 9-<I>epi</I>-6α-methoxy geniposidic acid (4), three new hemiterpene glycosides, 3-methylbut-3-enyl 2′-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (nonioside K) (6), 3-methylbut-3-enyl 6′-O-(β-D-xylopyranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (nonioside L) (8), and 3-methylbut-3-enyl 6′-O-(β-D-xylofuranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (nonioside M) (9), and two new saccharide fatty acid esters, 6′-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-1′-<I>O</I>-[(2ξ)-2-methylbutanoyl]-β-D-glucopyranose (nonioside N) (16) and 6′-<I>O</I>-(β-D-xylopyranosyl)-1′-<I>O</I>-[(2ξ)-2-methylbutanoyl]-β-D-glucopyranose (nonioside O) (17), were isolated from a methanol extract of the fruits of <I>Morinda citrifolia</I> (noni), along with 11 known compounds, namely, three iridoid glycosides (1-3), two hemiterpene glycosides (5 and 7), and five saccharide fatty acid esters (10-15). Upon evaluation of compounds 1-17 on the melanogenesis in the B16 melanoma cells induced with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), 13 compounds (1, 3, 4, 6-14, and 17) exhibited marked inhibitory effects with 34-49% reduction of melanin content at 100 μM with no or almost no toxicity to the cells (91-116% of cell viability at 100 μM).

The effect of consumption of fatty acids and selected nutrients, along with regular physical activity, on cardiovascular risk factors in rats was investigated.Male rats were divided into the seven groups: Group 1: regular food and drinking water, Group 2: same as Group. 1 + physical activity (whole body vibration; WBV), Group 3: same as Group. 2 + calcium, vitamin D, boron, Group 4: same as Group. 3 + canola oil, Group 5: same as Group. 3 + sunflower oil, Group 6: same as Group. 3 + mix of sunflower oil and canola oil, Group 7: same as Group. 3 + coconut oil. Rats were treated for 8 weeks, and analysis of the frozen plasmas was performed. A- Analysis between the treatment groups and control revealed that vibration training in Group 2 increased body weight (P = 0.04), plasma creatin kinase (CK), (P = 0.02), and estradiol (E2), (P = 0.03). A novel method to quantify glycidol fatty acid esters (GEs), supposed to present as food processing contaminants in edible oils, has been developed in combination with double solid-phase extractions (SPEs) and LC-MS measurements. The analytes were five species of synthetic GEs: glycidol palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid esters. The use of selected ion monitoring in a positive ion mode of atmospheric chemical ionization-MS with a reversed-phase gradient LC provided a limit of quantification of 0.0045-0.012 μg/mL for the standard GEs, which enables the detection of GEs in μg ranges per gram of edible oil. Using the double SPE procedure first in reversed-phase and then in normal-phase second, allowed large amounts of co-existing acylglycerols in the oils to be removed, which improved the robustness and stability of the method in sequential runs of LC-MS measurements. When the method was used to quantify GEs in three commercial sources of edible oils, the recovery% ranged from 71.3 to 94.6% (average 79.4%) with a relative standard deviation of 2.9-12.1% for the two oils containing triacylglycerols as major components, and ranged from 90.8 to 105.1% (average 97.2%) with a relative standard deviation of 2.1-12.0% for the other, diacylglycerol-rich oil. Although the accuracy and precision of the method may not be yet sufficient, it is useful for determining trace levels of GEs and will be helpful for the quality control of edible oils.
