The monostiliferous hoplonemertean Proamphiporus kaimeiae sp. nov. is described based on a single specimen collected from the bottom of the Northwest Pacific, 262 m deep, off Tohoku in Japan, by use of a remotely operated vehicle during a cruise organized by Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) research project in 2019. The position of the cerebral organs in the new species, being posterior to the proboscis insertion, is unusual for Eumonostilifera, which is one of the diagnostic traits of the so-far monospecific Proamphiporus Chernyshev and Polyakova, 2019, and Amphiporus rectangulus Strand, Herrera-Bachiller, Nygren, and Kånneby, 2014. The latter is herein transferred to Proamphiporus to yield a new combination, Proamphiporus rectangulus comb. nov., based on the reported internal morphology. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and histone H3 genes placed P. kaimeiae in a clade comprised of Proamphiporus crandalli Chernyshev and Polyakova, 2019 and Proamphiporus rectangulus.

During the past three decades, ten specimens (174.1–235.1 mm standard length) of the Bluespotted Hind Cephalopholis cyanostigma (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1828), distributed in the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans, have been collected from the southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan, although the species has been formally recorded from Japanese waters only on the basis of a single photograph, with the northernmost specimen-based record being Taiwan. The Ryukyu Island specimens, described here in detail, represent the first specimen-based records of C. cyanostigma from Japan, in addition to the northernmost record of the species. The new standard Japanese name “Samidare-hata” is proposed for the species.

The genus-group name Curtipleon Bǎcescu, 1976 is not available due to Bǎcescu’s failure to fix its type species in the original publication. This genus-group name should be attributed to Sieg (1983)—the work accidentally validated the genus-group name under Article 13 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

A new species of ectosymbiotic branchiobdellidan, Cirrodrilus iwakiensis sp. nov., is described from Cambaroides japonicus (de Haan, 1849), the endemic freshwater Japanese crayfish, collected in Aomori Prefecture, northern Honshu Island, Japan. The anatomical features used to identify C. iwakiensis are compared with those of its closest congener, C. nipponicus (Yamaguchi, 1932), as well as C. aomorensis (Yamaguchi, 1934) and C. tsugarensis Gelder and Ohtaka, 2000 distributed in the same region.

An adult male specimen of the amphibian acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucidus Van Cleave, 1925 was isolated from the intestine of a whitespotted char, Salvelinus leucomaenis leucomaenis (Pallas, 1814), collected from a stream in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan. This represents the second record of fish infection by this species of acanthocephalan. The life cycle of A. lucidus is discussed, and the char is assumed to have become infected by preying on a frog harboring the specimen. The known vertebrate hosts of A. lucidus and the geographical distribution of this species in Japan and East Asia are tabulated.

We describe a new species of polyclad flatworm, Prosthiostomum torquatum sp. nov., from the rocky intertidal zone in Shirahama, on the Pacific coast of middle Honshu, Japan. Prosthiostomum torquatum is characterised by a unique dorsal colouration, which is comprised of i) numerous orange maculae and blue dots dispersed all over the dorsal surface, ii) a transverse dark-brown line in the anterior part of the body running slightly anterior to another transverse white line, both of which are slightly bent backwards at mid-point, and iii) an incomplete, mesh-like, median band made by dark-brown pigments, fading away posteriorly. By this dorsal colour pattern, the new species can be distinguished from similar congeners such as P. trilineatum Yeri and Kaburaki, 1920 and P. komaii Kato, 1944. We performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 462-bp partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of four species of Prosthiostomidae currently available in public databases in addition to that of P. torquatum. In the resulting tree, P. torquatum was sister to Lurymare clavocapitata Marquina, Aguado, and Noreña, 2015 originally described from Lizard Island, Australia. While these two share a similar dorsal colouration, P. torquatum can be distinguished from L. clavocapitata by i) the absence of a common muscle bulb/sheath enclosing the whole male copulatory apparatus, ii) the median mesh-like band comprised of dark-brown pigments, and iii) COI uncorrected p-distance being 0.094. As a result, our phylogenetic tree indicates the possibility that Prosthiostomum and Lurymare as currently diagnosed may not be monophyletic, and that the common muscle bulb enclosing the whole male copulatory apparatus may not be appropriate as a diagnostic character for Lurymare.

A new species of cyclopoid copepod, Allocyclops (Allocyclops) austronipponicus, is described from a freshwater habitat in Okinawa Island, Japan. This is the first record of the genus Allocyclops from Asia. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having the following combination of character states: (1) antennal seta representing exopod present; (2) maxillule with two-segmented palp; (3) legs 1-4 each with inner coxal seta; (4) distal endopodal segment of leg 4 with three inner and one outer setae and two apical spines; and (5) seta present on remnant of proximal segment of leg 5, this seta short in comparison to length of somite.

Two mature specimens of the whale-fall lancelet Asymmetron inferum Nishikawa, 2004, were collected in 2016 from reducing gravel bottom near a hydrothermal vent, 196 m deep, at Oomuro Hole of Oomuro-dashi submarine volcano in the Izu Islands, Pacific coast of Japan by using the ROV Hyper-Dolphin during the RV Shinsei-maru KS-16-6 cruise of JAMSTEC. This species has so far been known exclusively from whale-fall communities off Cape Nomamisaki, SW Kyushu, Japan, 219–254 m deep. The new find suggests the dispersal stepping-stone hypothesis of whale-fall communities for the origin of vent and/or seep fauna.

A poorly known sculpin, Atopocottus tribranchius Bolin, 1936 (Cottidae), was redescribed on the basis of 56 specimens from several localities in Japan; off Yamaguchi, Kyoto and Niigata Prefectures on the Japan Sea coast, and Kochi Prefecture on the Pacific coast, and in the northern East China Sea. The specimens from Yamaguchi, Kochi and the East China Sea represent the first specimen-based records for the species from those regions. Minute organs on the trunk surface, previously regarded as lateral-line pores, are most likely epidermal pits containing free neuromasts, and lateral-line pores are restricted to a row of embedded lateral-line scales on the anterodorsal portion of the body. Diagnostic characters of the monotypic genus, Atopocottus Bolin, 1936, are here reviewed on the basis of external and selected osteological characters, described for the first time. The genus is more similar to the Southern Hemisphere (Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand) genus Antipodocottus Bolin, 1952 than to Stlengis Jordan and Starks, 1904, known only from Japan, in having poorly developed cephalic sensory canals with few pores and the lateral-line scales in a simple canal without dorsal and ventral branches. However, Atopocottus differs from Antipodocottus in having fewer lateral-line scales (3–5 vs. 5–33 in the latter); the uppermost preopercular spine with 1–6 dorsal branches, their length and width becoming shorter and narrower, respectively, toward the spine tip, some of them with two spinous points (vs. 2–5 simple, similarly sized dorsal branches); and lacking a supraocular tentacle (vs. usually present). A more comprehensive examination of the two genera is necessary to determine their monophyly.

The phylogenetic relationships of Platycephalidae and its related taxa were analyzed. Platycephaloidei and Scorpaenoidei form a monophyletic group supported by two synapomorphies : presence of a backwardly-directed opercular spine and an extrinsic muscle derived from the hypaxial. Platycephaloidei and Plectrogenium, the triglids and peristediids are monophyletic, characterized by a posterior pelvic fossa. Bembradium and Plectrogenium constitute a monophyletic group, which divided initially from remainder of the clade. Next Parabembras, followed by Bembras, branched off the latter. Platycephalidae and its sister group, including the triglids, peristediids and hoplichthyids, have 4 synapomorphies. The triglids, peristediids and hoplichthyids share 15 apomorphies. The peristediids and hoplichthyids constitute a monophyletic group supported by 8 synapomorphies. The newly-defined suborder Platycephaloidei includes the following 7 families : Plectrogeniidae, Parabembridae, Bembridae, Triglidae, Peristediidae, Hoplichthyidae and Platycephalidae. Platycephalidae is redefined, being a monophyletic group supported by 6 synapomorphies, and including 2 subfamilies and 17 genera, 3 of them new.

From Japan, 11 species of freshwater Nematomorpha have been described to date, but there are very few photographic documentations of any of them. This investigation describes specimens from the Lake Biwa Museum (Shiga Prefecture, Japan) and supplies the first SEM pictures and additional data for the species Chordodes fukuii Inoue, 1951, Japanese specimens of C. japonensis Inoue, 1952, and Paragordionus kawamurai Yamaguti, 1943. Two specimens likely belong to the genus Gordionus, which has not been reported from Japan before, but they could not be determined to the species level. Several specimens belonging to the genus Gordius could not be assigned to a certain species. This is due to general problems with the status of several Gordius species arising from the scarcity of taxonomically relevant characters.

Two specimens (124.0-148.6mm standard length) of a scorpionfish, Idiastion pacificum Ishida and Amaoka, 1992, were collected from the central North Pacific, representing the first record of the species from this area. This finding extends the distributional range of Idiastion pacificum, which was previously known only from the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, western North Pacific. This study provides new morphological data and a color photograph of I. pacificum based on these two additional specimens, with a comparison to Idiastion kyphos Eschmeyer, 1965.

The paper outlines the current discussion on the species problem : what actually is a species and how do we recognize such an entity in nature? Six of the major species notions are briefly explained. A distinction can be made between species concepts based on the process of interbreeding and concepts that focus on common descent. Application of these different types of species concept may give incompatible results. It is discussed to what extent we can be certain that the species delimited represent objective realities in nature and are independent of the discovery procedure applied. Further, it is argued that because of the existence of various evolutionary processes, nature can be divided into several natural entities, each representing a species of some sort. The choice of a particular species concept is determined by that aspect or process in nature that forms the focus of one's research agenda. This plea for pluralism should preferably not affect taxonomic procedure ; named species taxa should be based on only one, taxic species concept.

The phylogenetic relationships of the superfamily Scorpaenoidea are reconstructed cladistically, based on specimens belonging to 18 families, 59 genera, and 86 species, by using osteological and myological characters recognized in 111 transformation series. The following relationships are inferred: (1) the former Scorpaenoidei is paraphyletic; (2) the family Sebastidae is not monophyletic, most of the genera included having initially branched off other ingroup taxa; (3) the family Setarchidae and Trachyscorpia have a sister relationship, being nested within the paraphyletic Scorpaenidae; and (4) the family Neosebastidae is the sister group of the former Platycephaloidei. In conclusion, the Scorpaenoidea is reclassified into 20 families, accepting several redefined taxa, such as the Sebastidae, Sebastolobidae, and Scorpaenidae.

Eight species of the genus Paraleuctra are recognized in Japan, six of them being described as new herein : P. ezoensis from Hokkaido and P. ambulans, P. similis, P. hokurikuensis, P. angulata, and P. concava from Honshu. An apterous and a short-winged species are included. A neotype is designated for Leuctra okamotoa Claassen, 1936 ; this species is now transferred from Rhopalopsole to the present genus and is regarded as a senior subjective synonym of P. gracilis Kawai, 1967. Paraleuctra cercia (Okamoto, 1922) is redescribed and regarded as a senior subjective synonym of both P. forficularis (Okamoto, 1922) and L. higashiyamae Kohno, 1965. Paraleuctra elongata Kawai, 1967 is transferred to Rhopalopsole, and P. nipponica (Okamoto, 1922) and Rhopalopsole gifuensis Kohno, 1965 are transferred to Perlomyia. A key is provided for Asian species of Paraleuctra.

In 2004, Uchida published a partial revision of the family Hesionidae in Japan, where four new genera were proposed and 13 species newly described. However, both the holotype fixations and their depository numbers were omitted in the original article, rendering the names unavailable after Article 16.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. In this work, the names are made available by clarifying the depository of the types. We provide diagnoses for the four new genera (Synsyllidia Uchida, Uncopodarke Uchida, Parahesiocaeca Uchida, and Ichthyohesione Uchida) and 13 new species (Synsyllidia alternata Uchida, Oxydromus brevipodius Uchida, O. bunbuku Uchida, O. constrictus Uchida, O. fauveli Uchida, O. longifundus Uchida, O. okudai Uchida, O. parapallidus Uchida, Heteropodarke kiiensis Uchida, Uncopodarke intermedia Uchida, Microphthalmus itoi Uchida, Parahesiocaeca japonica Uchida, and Ichthyohesione gorgasiae Uchida). A key to species of Hesionidae recorded to date from Japan is also presented.

Iwogumoa songminjae (Paik and Yaginuma in Paik et al., 1969) is recorded for the first time from Japan on the basis of specimens collected in the Tsushima Islands, Kyushu and previously identified as I. insidiosa (L. Koch, 1878). The relationships among the Japanese species of Iwogumoa Kishida, 1955 are analyzed using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I with various Japanese species of Coelotes Blackwall, 1841 sensu lato as the outgroup. A new synonym is proposed through a comparison of morphological characteristics and the results of our molecular analysis: Coelotes iyoensis Nishikawa, 2009 (known only from the male) is a junior synonym of Coelotes mohrii Nishikawa, 2009 (known only from the female).

The genus Magadanichthys is established as a replacement name for the zoarcid fish genus Magadania Shinohara, Nazarkin and Chereshnev, 2004, which is preoccupied by an extinct brachiopod genus, Magadania Ganelin, 1977, and an extant lepidopteran genus, Magadania Kirpichnikova and Yamanaka, 2001. Magadanichthys contains only Magadanichthys skopetsi (Shinohara, Nazarkin and Chereshnev, 2004). Two new specimens caught in the sublittoral of the Shantar Islands and Sakhalin represent the southernmost records of the species. A description of the new specimens and new biological data are provided.

Epinephelus kupangensis Tucker, Kurniasih, and Craig, 2016, previously known from the Indo-West Pacific as far north as Taiwan, was recorded from Japan for the first time on the basis of two specimens (98.1–384.6 mm SL) collected from Tosa Bay, Kochi and Okinawa prefectures. The Kochi specimen had been previously reported as the first Japanese specimen of “Kokuten-aohata”, Epinephelus amblycephalus (Bleeker, 1857). Epinephelus kupangensis differs from the latter in having slightly lower numbers of lateral-line scales (46–49 vs. 48–51) and lateral scale series 91–99 (vs. 103–120), and lacking a U-shaped white marking dorsolaterally on the head and a white band below the orbit (vs. both present). The standard Japanese name “Kokuten-aohata” should be applied to E. kupangensis, the new standard Japanese name “Yahazu-aohata” being proposed for E. amblycephalus.
