It is a fact that image noise influences for image qualities of the brain CT are known widely. The same principle applies to 3D-CTA, image noise significantly influences the depiction of blood vessels. So we evaluated the use of CT-AEC for 3D-CTA to optimize the scan dose and control the depiction of cerebral vessels by CT-AEC. We decided to optimize the noise index (NI) for cerebral 3D-CTA through the use of an imitation blood phantom. In the evaluation of the depiction of the anterior choroidal artery that was able to be confirmed with DSA, the detection rate in high resolution mode: NI 6.0 was 70%. The depiction of the anterior choroidal artery became defective in the detailed exam mode: NI 7.0, low dose mode: NI 9.0 because of the noise. As for the existence of cerebral aneurysms, the sensitivities were 100% with DSA and 94.3% with 3D-CTA in detailed exam mode, and there was no statistical difference. The specificities of 3D-CTA had lowered to 92.6% and 97.2% in DSA. In low dose mode and detailed exam mode, DLP had decreased by 55.2% and 18.1% on the average compared to a fixed tube current (P<0.05). However, in high resolution mode, DLP increased by 5.9% on the average. It was necessary to limit the scan range to the region of interest when we used a fixed tube current. This clinical research verified that CT-AEC on cerebral 3D-CTA was useful for dose reduction and control of the depiction ability for inspection purposes.

Iterative reconstruction methods can reduce the noise of computed tomography (CT) images, which are expected to contribute to the reduction of patient dose CT examinations. The purpose of this study was to investigate impact of an iterative reconstruction method (iDose4, Philips Healthcare) on vessel visibility in coronary CT angiography (CTA) by using phantom studies. A simulated phantom was scanned by a CT system (iCT, Philips Healthcare), and the axial images were reconstructed by filtered back projection (FBP) and given a level of 1 to 7 (L1-L7) of the iterative reconstruction (IR). The vessel visibility was evaluated by a quantitative analysis using profiles across a 1.5-mm diameter simulated vessel as well as visual evaluation for multi planar reformation (MPR) images and volume rendering (VR) images in terms of the normalized-rank method with analysis of variance. The peak CT value of the profiles decreased with IR level and full width at half maximum of the profile also decreased with the IR level. For normalized-rank method, there was no statistical difference between FBP and L1 (20% dose reduction) for both MPR and VR images. The IR levels higher than L1 sacrificed the spatial resolution for the 1.5-mm simulated vessel, and their visual vessel visibilities were significantly inferior to that of the FBP.

This study aims to grasp the target area of the literature on ontology and to apply it in radiological technology. We used Google scholar to search the literature containing the keyword “ontology”. Our search identified and extracted 162,381 words from 29 manuscripts and used the 8,706 nouns excluding duplicates as individual variable. Using a cluster analysis, we categorized the documents to one of the following five classifications: (1) “Systematization of vocabulary by text mining”, (2) “Hierarchy of language information”, (3) “Conceptualization of situation”, (4) “Standardization of lexical information”, and (5) “Visualization of the concepts related to the problem”. We propose that the terminologies in (2), (4), and (5) cluster can be used in radiological technology field.

We proposed a method for a computer-aided diagnosis system that distinguishes between benign and malignant lesions in gastrointestinal digital radiography. To begin with, the level set method was applied in order to extract a tumor region from the image which was smoothed by the bilateral filter. Next, we selected four image features with the large SN ratio among various image features obtained from a tumor region using the Mahalanobis-Taguchi method, which has been employed mainly in quality engineering. The selected four image features—circularity, irregularity, size, and perimeter—were used as input data for the artificial neural network, which was employed for distinction between benign and malignant lesions. By using 43 regions of interest cropped from the 43 clinical cases, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of diagnostic accuracy for the classification obtained with this proposed method was 0.970, whereas the average AUC obtained with 7 human observers (3 radiologists and 4 radiological technologist) was 0.941.

We have investigated the role assignment and radiation exposure of medical workers (including receptionists) in PET (positron emission tomography) facilities in Japan using a questionnaire. The survey period was from October 1st to November 15th 2006. The response rate for the questionnaire was 60.0% (72/120 facilities). Nurses were engaged in the intravenous administration of radioactive FDG in 66.9% of PET facilities. In 89.5% of PET facilities, radiological technologists mainly performed the PET examination. The average radiation exposure to medical workers was 0.13 mSv/month (n: 709, S.D.: 0.16) as the effective dose. It was shown that radiation exposure was significantly different depending on the occupation and content of work (p<0.01). The radiation exposure of cyclotron operators and radiological technologists was higher than that of the other occupations (p<0.01). The highest radiation dose to one worker per a PET facility was 0.60 [mSv month−1], which was 4.6 times higher than the average dose of 0.13 [mSv month−1]. We have clarified the actual conditions of radiation protection in PET facilities in Japan for the first time.

In Japan, various types of MRI equipment, having varying magnetic field strengths, are widely used. However, the biggest problem encountered while utilizing an MRI is the scarcity of information and guidelines pertaining to implants, internal, and external metallic objects. This leads to uncertainty when an unspecified object is encountered during an examination andcreates the possibility of performing an ambiguous MRI. Therefore, this study classified a range of objects into 12 categories using database management software. An attempt was made to create an environment where reference and comparison of products could be performed. This study also investigated the ways and extent to which medical equipment package inserts reference the MRI. With the co-operation of various corporations and the use of information such as medical equipment package inserts, product information was collected and an environment for the reference and comparison of products became available. In addition, it became apparent while examining these package inserts that orthopedic products had the least information available. It is likely that this information will be useful in medical settings and this kind of database will become increasingly necessary in the future.
