The problem on jackknifing estimators is investigated in the presence of nuisanceparameters from the viewpoint of higher order asymptotics. It is shown that theasymptotic deficiency of the jackknife estimator relative to the bias-adjusted maximumlikelihood estimator (MLE) is equal to zero under true and assumed m.odcls. Moreover,the asymptotic deficiency of the MLE or the jackknife estimator under the assumedmodel relative to that under the true model is given.

In Bayesian data analysis, a deviance information criterion (DIC)proposed by Spiegelhalter et al. (2002) is widely used for the modelselection, since this criterion is relatively easy to calculate and applicableto a wide range of statistical models. Spiegelhalter et al. (2002)gave an asymptotic justification of DIC in the case where the numberof observations grows with respect to the number of parameters.In small-sample cases, however, the estimated asymptotic bias of DICmight underestimate the true bias (Burnham, 2002). In this paper, wepropose a finite-sample bias corrected information criterion (ICBL) forthe Bayesian linear regression models with conjugate priors, as AICCproposed by Sugiura (1978) in frequentist framework. We examine theperformance of the proposed information criterion relative to the DICfor small-sample cases by simulation, and found that our proposedinformation criterion outperforms DIC.

Recently a new approximation to a percentage point of non-centralt-distributions was proposed by Akahira [1]. In this paper the approximationformula is presented and the existence and uniqueness of a solution of theequation on the formula is proved. Numerical results are also given.

In the presence of a nuisance parameter the asymptotic deficiency of the discretizedlikelihood estimator (DLE) relative to the bias-adjusted maximum likelihood estimatoris obtained under the assumed model. It consists of two parts. One is the lossof information associated with the DLE of the parameter to be estimated. Another,is that due to the "incorrectness" of the assumed model. Some examples on the normaland Weibull type distributions are given.

We use ultrashort optical pulses to microscopically image carrier and thermal diffusion in two spatial dimensions in pristine and mechanically polished surfaces of crystalline silicon. By decomposing changes in reflectivity in the latter sample into a transient component that varies with delay time and a steady-state component that varies with pump chopping frequency, the influence of thermal diffusion is isolated from that of carrier diffusion and recombination. Additionally, studies using carrier injection density as a parameter are used to clearly identify the carrier recombination pathway.

Before I discuss the main theme, I first discuss the modernist-primitivist controversy and the formalist-substantivist controversy regarding the state of the economy in Classical Athens and its method of analysis, for I consider this topic to be the best introduction to the subjects that follow. Second, I give a brief review of the Athenian economy of the 4th century B.C., the period about which relatively good information about the economy is available, as a background for the economic ideas. I take a modernist view of the Athenian economy of the 4th century B.C. The main theme begins with the discussion of the economic writings of Xenophon, for among classical writers he showed a best understanding of the working of the economy. After this, I discuss Ethics of Plato and Aristotle, Plato's economics, and Aristotle’s economics, in that order. This order is chosen because for Plato and Aristotle economics is a part of ethics. I call their economics the economics of a broad sense, in contrast to the narrow modern economics devoid of normative considerations.

For a sum of independent discrete random variables, its higher order large-deviation approximation is discussed. An approximation to the tail probability of the distribution of the sum is provided, and its numerical comparison with other approximations is done in the binomial case. Consequently, the approximation formula is seen to be more accurate.

From the decision-theoretic viewpoint, using a weighted loss we compare the risks of testing procedures in the location and scale parameter cases. We also get numerically the minimax solution of Bayes testing procedures w. r. t. a parameter of the prior distribution, under the weighted loss.
