Patients with sudden deafness who were treated either in our department or in our branch hospital between January 1984 and December 1994 were divided into two groups. Group A consisted of 69 patients who were treated with steroids, vasodilators, and stellate ganglion block but without hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Group B consisted of the other 85 patients who were treated with not only steroids, vasodilators, and stellate ganglion block but also with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Patients in the two groups showed no significant difference in age, or number of patients with vertigo, but the initial audiogram was worse and time from onset to consultation were significantly greater in group B than those in group A. The prognoses of the two groups were analyzed by several issues, such as initial audiogram, time from onset to consult and there was no significant difference.

To establish highly automated leather finishing process, it is necessary to develop the leather handling robot system which are provided with automatic aligned stacking and feeding functions of side-leather for loading and unloading to leather finishing machines. The robot system are composed of manipulation hand with vacuum pad and image processing system to recognize the shape patterns of side-leather for aligning functions. For the image processing, 2 types of sensors are applied. They are CCD camera for the recognition of shape patterns and other one is luster sensor to detect grain or flesh side. By applying the developed shape patterns recognition algorithms to the image processing system, side-leather discriminations of grain or flesh, head or tail, belly or back were carried out perfectly. As the result, the handling robot aligned side-leathers with following 2 stacking methods.1) Stacking with left and right side along the backbone (LR method).2) Stacking with grain to grain (GG method).Also, investigated on the robot hand to hold correctly each 1 leaf from stacked up side-leathers on the table.

By means of laryngofiberscopy, pneumatography and photoelectric glottography, the closure reflex activity of the larynx which was evoked by trasnasal stimulation with various concentrations of isovaleric acid and ammonia during inspiration was determined in 24 normal subjects and 53 patients with chronic sinusitis, anosmia, nasal allergy and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).The reflex activity was characterized by a remarkable tendency to decrease in the majority of normal older subjects and most of the patients with conditions other than nasal allergy.It was assumed that this reflex might be of great importance in preventing hazardous materials from going into the lung and that depression or absence of the reflex sensitivity in the upper respiratory tract might lead to a higher incidence of pulmonary diseases.The results which were obtained here will help clarify the laryngeal clossure reflex. This methodology may be employed practically to serve as objective olfactometry.
