The main subject of this study is to show that it is possible to assume an intimate relationship between Joseph Butler(1692-1752)and Adam Smith(1723-1790)through comparative analysis of their arguments concerning self-deceit.The relationship between Butler and Smith is a subject which has been relatively disregarded in relevant literature. Although scholars have observed similarity between them in respect of conscience, there are little research conducted on this subject. Focusing on self-deceit, the present study demonstrates that sufficient evidence exists to assume a more intimate relationship between Butler and Smith than has been considered.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between moral sense theory and utilitarianism in Francis Hutcheson's moral philosophy.It has been argued by some scholars that Hutcheson treated moral sense and utilitarianism as different and separated principles by which we make moral judgements, which sometimes leads to insistence that there is an inconsistency in his moral theory. This paper points out some problems with this kind of interpretation and illustrates how Hutcheson's utilitarianism is derived from the moral sense theory through textual analysis.
