Meiobenthos is a term usually referring to microscopic benthic organisms which pass through a 1 mm mesh sieve and are retained on a 32–63 μm one. Meiobenthos occurs in any aquatic environment, shows high species diversity as well as high biomass, and often plays an important role in ecological and evolutionary studies. However, the species diversity of these animals in Japanese waters has been insufficiently investigated. Here we review several methodologies for collecting extant meiobenthos from the marine environment, including the method for sampling sediments in various environments, extracting meiobenthos from the sediment samples, and some tips for sorting, fixation, and observation of them.

Recent studies of Japanese kinorhynchs are reviewed. Kinorhynchs (Phylum Kinorhyncha) are ecdysozoan animals with a body composed of head consisted of mouth cone and eversible introvert, neck, and 11 trunk segments. To date, about 230 species have been recorded worldwide, and all of them are exclusively marine meiobenthic species. In Japanese waters, 20 species have been known so far: of these, 9 species were described as new to science or reported as new to Japanese waters within this decade, and 4 species will be described/reported soon. Studies with the molecular phylogenetic and the total evidence analyses detected the phylogenetic relationships within the phylum, and suggested the new classification system. Phylogeographic study of two Echinoderes species detected the geographic population structures of the species, and suggested several historical events had affected to the population structures and distribution patterns of the two species.

高等学校地学基礎において,実際の空間の中での体験を通して,その空間像のイメージを形成することで地層の広がりを把握するための地層観察の模擬体験活動を考案した.その際,複数の露頭情報を総合して考え,水平方向・鉛直方向の地層のつながりを考えることを意図して立体的に考えることができるワークシートを作成・活用した.この活動は,ほとんどの生徒に肯定的に受け入れられており,地層のつながりや重なりを考えることや他の地点と組み合わせて地層の広がりを考えさせるうえで有効な手立てとなりうることが確認された.

Typhoon "Rusa" (No.0215) attacked the Republic of Korea from August 31 to September 1, 2002. Depended on this typhoon, the heavy rainfall was brought through the Korean Peninsula. In Particularly, 100mm of hourly precipitation and 870mm of one day precipitation were recorded on August 31 in Kangnung where is located in the north-east of Korea. The accumulated precipitation at Kangnung amounted to 898mm from August 30 to September 1. During heavy rainfall, many slope failures occurred. The one failured slope was investigated in this study to make clear the mechanism of slope failure with special attention to clay veins developed on it by means of X-ray diffraction, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and computer simulation.
