I argue in this paper that, contrary to the widely accepted view that the philosophical concept of human person was first articulated in the modern philosophy, notably by J. Locke and I. Kant, the concept ot person became vacuous through the process of secularization in the modern period. After a clarification of the meaning of "secularization" through a reflection on the principle of the equality of all persons, I have attempted to substantiate my position through a critical reflection on the concept of "happiness" in Kant, and a brief analysis of the transformation of the idea of freedom in the modern period as compared to the middle ages.

In this paper, which is to be a part of my project of a systematic philosophy of human person, I have tried to present a more positive and complete ethics of human person, overcoming the negative character of the Kantian ethics of human person. The "dignity" of human person seems to be acknowledged almost universally, and its violation in every form is strictly and unconditionally forbidden. We hardly find, however, an adequate and full treatment of the ethical problem of the positive and fruitful way of living as a person. For example, although we often speak of "the formation of person" as the central educational objective, the exact ethical meaning of the "formation" of human person is extremely difficult to clarify. Another difficult problem of the ethics of human person is the possibility and the right way of loving human person as person. I have attempted to provide an answer to these problems through an examination of the "social" virtue of justice, particularly the general virtue of legal justice which has the common good as its proper object.
