A nutritional analysis was conducted on the dietary intake of a group of 6 vegan children aged 7 to 14 who had been living on a vegan diet including brown rice for from 4 to 10 years, and on that of an age-matched control group. In addition, their serum vitamin B12 levels and other data (red blood cell count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, etc.) were determined in the laboratory. In vegans' diets, 2-4g of nori (dried laver), which contained B12, were consumed daily. Not a single case of symptoms due to B12 deficiency was found. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups with respect to any of the examination data, including B12 levels (p<0.05). Therefore, consumption of nori may keep vegans from suffering B12 deficiency.

The adiabatic quantum flux parametron (AQFP) is an energy-efficient, high-speed superconducting logic device. To observe the tiny output currents from the AQFP in experiments, high-speed voltage drivers are indispensable. In the present study, we develop a compact voltage driver for AQFP logic based on a Josephson latching driver (JLD), which has been used as a high-speed driver for rapid single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) logic. In the JLD-based voltage driver, the signal currents of AQFP gates are converted into gap-voltage-level signals via an AQFP/RSFQ interface and a four-junction logic gate. Furthermore, this voltage driver includes only 15 Josephson junctions, which is much fewer than in the case for the previously designed driver based on dc superconducting quantum interference devices (60 junctions). In measurement, we successfully operate the JLD-based voltage driver up to 4 GHz. We also evaluate the bit error rate (BER) of the driver and find that the BER is 7.92×10-10 and 2.67×10-3 at 1GHz and 4GHz, respectively.

The effects of vitamin E deficiency and a combined high salt intake on pathological changes in the kidney and testis were studied with young rats given linseed oil and cod liver oil for 10 and 27 weeks, respectively, as a preliminary attempt to investigate the relation between vitamin E deficiency and lipid metabolism involving cell membrane fragility. Vitamin E deficiency caused by linseed oil resulted in degenerative renal changes and post-mortem renal autolysis. Supplementation with vitamin E partially protected the animals against the renal pathological changes. When cod liver oil was given, atrophy of the kidney and testis was observed. In both cases, renal autolysis and other signs of vitamin E deficiency were noted. The high salt intake had further effect on kidney changes when linseed oil was given and promoted testicular changes seen with cod liver oil but had less influence on other deficient signs. A decrease in lecithin and linoleic acid of the phospholipids of both organs was shown to be related to vitamin E deficiency.

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency induces severe adverse events in patients receiving fluoropyrimidines. We encountered a 64-year-old DPD-deficient man with a severe capecitabine-related gastrointestinal disorder. He received capecitabine-containing chemotherapy after rectal cancer resection. During the first course of chemotherapy, he developed severe diarrhea, a fever, and hematochezia. Endoscopy revealed mucosal shedding with bleeding throughout the gastrointestinal tract. DPD deficiency was suspected because he developed many severe adverse events of capecitabine early and was finally confirmed based on the finding of a low DPD activity level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. After one month of intensive care, hemostasis and mucosal healing were noted, although his gastrointestinal function did not improve, and he had persistent nutritional management issues.

This paper presents a finite-element analysis on the free vibration of Japanese drum wood barrels under insufficient material property data. Unlike isotropic material such as steel, wood behaves like an orthotropic composite material, whose elastodynamic characterization in a cylindrical shell needs Young’s modulus in the longitudinal (in-grain) and circumferential (cross-grain) directions, shear modulus, and Poisson ratios. Due to measurement difficulty encountered during the process of testing, only the longitudinal Young’s modulus and the specific gravity of the wood were measured. In the analysis, the finite-element models of the drum were constructed using conical shell elements. The required unknown elastic constants were estimated consecutively by a try-and-error approach, and the estimated values were reached when the computed resonance frequencies matched simultaneously with those of the seven lower modes measured in experiments. In order to accomplish this, both the estimated constants and the finite-element analysis must be within acceptable range of accuracy. It was found that the values of the circumferential (cross-grain) Young’s modulus, which was unknown at the beginning of the study, turns out to be crucial in determining the lower mode resonance frequencies. The usefulness of this analysis is that the estimated elastic constants can now be used for updating the finite-element model. The updated model can then be used calculating the higher order modes which cannot be practically obtained through measurements.

近年、Facebook、Twitter、mixi、GREE、Mobageの爆発的普及と、スマートフォンと呼ばれる携帯電話の登場により、掲示板、ブログ、SNS(ソーシャルネットワーキングサービス)の利用者数が急増している。高校生の携帯電話所持率も高く(95.1%)、携帯電話による子どもたちの被害も急増している。その内容は、いじめ、詐欺、異性間トラブル(強姦、児童売春)などの深刻な被害である。他方で、利用者は、被害者になるだけでなく、ネットの匿名性により、容易に加害者にもなり得る。いったん加害者になれば、匿名性は失われ、犯罪者となることもある。携帯電話を使用することは、被害者や加害者になり得るリスクを含んでいる。筆者らは過去9年にわたり国内20校以上の高校において携帯電話の情報モラル教育を実施してきた。高校生にとって理解しやすい内容にするため、筆者らの情報モラル講演は、本人追跡性について詳説、さらにデモンストレーションも行っている。本稿は、携帯電話利用にともなって生じる社会問題の複雑さ・深刻さについて分類、解説した上で、これまでの高校教育現場での情報モラル教育の実践をふまえ、効果的な情報モラル教育の一つの考え方を示すことを目的としている。本稿が高校教育現場で日夜問題に直面している関係者各位の手助けになることを期待したい。In recent years, the number of users of the BBS, bulletin board system, the blog, and the SNS, social networking service, are increasing rapidly along with the explosive spread of Facebook, Twitter, mixi, GREE and Mobage, and with the appearance of" smart phone," a new type of the cellular phone. The more high school students possess cellular phones, the more serious damage the students suffer: bullying, fraud and even sexual assaults and troubles, such as rape and juvenile prostitution. On the other hand, by the anonymity of network, students can turn into not only victims but assailants easily. Once a student becomes an assailant, however, anonymity is lost and he/she can easily become a criminal. Thus, using cellular phones involves taking risks of becoming a victim and an assailant. We authors have performed the information morals education of cellular phones over the past nine years at over 20 Japanese senior high schools. Our lectures on the information morals education have been especially based on the user traceability for cellular phones, and are readily appealing to the students, including a demonstration of showing an IP address on PC/cellular phone's displays. In this paper, we first classify and explain the complexity and seriousness of the social problems which arise as a consequence of using cellular phones. Then we show principles for effective information morals education, based on authors' experiences of the lectures on information morals education so far. We will be happy if this paper could help to support high school teachers, facing these serious problems every day.

A single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) system with a mass(m), a spring(k), and a damping(c) is a basic mechanical system.It is well known that a complex mechanical system is represented by a combination of infinite number of SDOF systems.The modal analysis theory is based on this principle, but only one type among various types of SDOF systems is presently employed for a modeling of complex systems.When one needs to estimate m, k, and c of a SDOF system from the measurement of the resonance frequency and the loss factor, the relationships between them must be exactly known.Those relationships are known for commonly used SDOF systems, but those for rather unfamiliar types are not known.In this technical report, various types of SDOF systems and their equivalent electrical circuits are listed, and equations that relate the resonance frequencies to the undamped resonance(natural) frequencies and the loss factors are given.It is also shown that, for some type of SDOF systems, some cares must be taken how to interpret the loss factor.
