The need for the automated analysis of sporting activities has increased dramatically. In this study, we analyzed and quantitatively evaluated tennis swings using computer vision. Two cameras are used to detect the positions of balls and rackets in 3-D. By subtracting successive images from each other, the relative positions and 3-D trajectories of balls and racket centers are calculated. An ellipse fitting method is used to estimate the racket contours and the normal vectors of the racket face are determined. Racket face angles are calculated using the components of the normal racket vectors, with three different shots (flat shots, slice shots and drive shots) being quantitatively discriminated using these angles. Ball and racket speeds for five stroke types ranging from beginner to expert are calculated and compared to evaluate shot techniques.

This study has proposed a new coordinate measuring machine (CMM) based on a three degree-of-freedom parallel mechanism. This paper describes a kinematic calibration method using a double ball bar (DBB) system with fixed ball distance. The CMM with a touch trigger probe measures the moving ball of the DBB, and calculates position errors of the ball using kinematic parameters. The least square method using Jacobian matrix corrects gradually the kinematic parameters so that the position errors are minimized. The above calculations have been repeated in both numerical simulations and experiments. The position error approaches a zero level, but has never reached it. The calibration with 19 parameters decreased the position errors of the DBB from 168 μm to 9 μm in the experiments. Furthermore, accuracies of both length measurement with block gauges and profile measurement with an optical flat have been improved after the calibration. The measurement accuracy most improves when the repetitive operation is discontinued after three or five calculations.

This paper proposes a novel approach for video-based person re-identification that exploits deep convolutional neural networks to learn the similarity of persons observed from video camera. By Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), each video sequence of a person is mapped to a Euclidean space where distances between feature embeddings directly correspond to measures of person similarity. By improved parameter learning method called Entire Triplet Loss, all possible triplets in the mini-batch are taken into account to update network parameters at once. This simple change of parameter updating method significantly improves network training, enabling the embeddings to be further discriminative. Experimental results show that proposed model achieves new state of the art identification rate on iLIDS-VID dataset and PRID-2011 dataset with 78.3%, 83.9% at rank 1, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a fast and robust 6D pose estimation of objects from a RGB-D image. Our proposed method consists of two components: PCOF-MOD (multimodal perspectively cumulated orientation feature) and balanced pose tree. PCOF-MOD is based on the orientation histograms of depth gradient and surface normal vectors, those are extracted on synthesized depth images using randomized 3D pose parameters and 3D CAD data of a target object. Therefore, the model templates of PCOF-MOD explicitly handle a certain range of 3D object pose. Additionally, a large number of templates are organized into a coarse-to-fine 3D pose tree in order to accelerate 6D pose estimation. Predefined polyhedra for viewpoint sampling are prepared for each level of an image pyramid and 3D object pose trees are built so that the number of child nodes of every parent node are almost equal in each pyramid level. In the experimental evaluation of 6D object pose estimation on publicly available RGB-D image dataset, our proposed method showed higher accuracy and comparable speed in comparison with state-of-the-art techniques.

Vibrations and noises of gears consist of the average component and the fluctuating one. The former is the component which always appears in each tooth meshing. The latter is the component which fluctuates about the average component. In the first report, it was described that the moving average method was very effective for extracting the average component. In that report, a steady rotation of gears was assumed. However, the number of revolution of gears always fluctuates more or less in actual gear equipments. In this report, the generation of the side band waves due to the fluctuation is explained and the allowable value of the fluctuation ratio is given to extract the average component.
