With an intense thermal variation, optical encoder yields measuring error because of the generation of nonlinear strain due to the difference of the thermal expantion coefficient between a glass scale and a metallic parts of machines. In this study, a method of using a grating which is directly manufactured on a metallic surface of parts of machines is proposed. Using this method, the thermal strain is made linear and the error becomes simplified to calibrate. Furthermore, it realizes a miniaturization of the system and improves its vibration-resistance. This paper shows the process of making a grating on a metallic surface by photolithography using some methods and ascertains the sufficient performance of this scale in an optical encoder.

The motion planning approach of a multi-robot system for the “Furoshiki” wrapping operations has been newly developed. This approach considers the loci of the handling points for the wrapping and the tying of the sheet. Especially, to avoid the complex motion of tying at the “Mamusubi” operation, the newly approach has been proposed. This approach divides the crossing operation into the two motions. The one is the 2-dimensional motion and the other is the wrapped object rotation around vertical axis. Also, this multi-robot system consists of the two handling robot arms, the shifting operation robot arm and the rotating mechanism for the wrapped object. The handling robot arms consist of a 2-DOF SCARA type robot and a 1-DOF linear motion system. And the shifting operation robot arm is the 3-DOF SCARA type robot which can adjust the pose of the End-effector. In this report, the proposed approach is verified using a prototype robot system. And it is confirmed that the testing rectangular object can be wrapped and tied the desired shape.

In some manual manufacturing processes, the human operator could perform its task well and swiftly, if it could acquire sensory information helpful to the performance effectively. In those situations, high frequency components contained in the sensory information (feedback signal to the operator) must be suppressed, because the operator cannot recognize and respond them. However, the filtering condition suitable for the suppression has never investigated so far. In this research, the cut-off frequency of low pass filter in active visual feedback system has been investigated. The objective manufacturing operation is to make a small-diameter hole onto an aluminum workpiece with a carbide drill. As the visual feedback device, see-through-see-around type head mounted display (HMD) was examined. The feedback information is cutting force and its magnitude is displayed by sector chart on HMD's screen. As the results, from the points of operating efficiency, workload and fatigue of the operators, it is found that the optimum cut-off frequency exists and it is related with operator's response characteristics measured separately.

This paper describes a suppression of the thermal drift error and an extension of a measurement range to micrometers in the comparative length measurement using a regular crystalline lattice as a reference scale and a dual tunneling unit scanning microscope (DTU-STM) as a detector. A thermo-stabilized cell, in which the DTU-STM can be set, was developed to reduce the temperature fluctuation to less than 0.05 K. In order to assess the thermo-stabilized cell, direct length comparison between the certified scanning electron microscope (SEM) standard grating with a average pitch of 240 nm and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) Iattice spacing, which is 0.246 nm, was performed using the DTU-STM, whose main body is made from Super-Invar. Images of the grating and the HOPG were simultaneously obtained in the range of 1um. To shorten the measurement time and thus reduce the thermal drift error, the lengths of I um for the two samples were measured along the fast scanning axis. A new ultra-low thermally drifted DTU-STM, whose body is fabricated from ultra-low linear expansion glass, was also developed to extend a measurement range to micrometers in the comparative length measurement. Long atomic image of HOPG crystal over a 5-um-long region along the fast scanning axis was obtained using the new DTU-STM in the thermo-stabilized cell. The experimental results show the possibility of the comparative length measurement in micrometers range with sub-nanometer resolution using the HOPG crystal and the DTU-STMs.

以上,工作機械の小形軽量化について述べてきたが,工作機械自身がその時々の産業技術の結晶とも言われており,それらの影響を大いに受けながら小形軽量化が進んでいくものと思われる.したがって設計者は常にそれら周辺技術を積極的に吸収しながら開発設計を行う必要がある.ところで,特に大形の工作機械では工作物の大きさによりその小形化には限界があると思われる.これを打破するたたには大工さんがカンナを持って木材を加工するように,工具を持ったロボットが工作物の加工箇所まで移動して加工を行うような加工方式を実現する必要があると思われる.研究面でもそのような試みがなされつつある.

In this closed-loop position control system, the mechanism's oscillatory characteristics were considered in the design of the control loop. Using the usual P and PI modes for position and velocity controls, the oscillations become unstable as the control gain was set larger. For (P, I-P) controls, on the other hand, those characteristics become more stable as the gain increased. For this reason, the latter can be set at higher gain for faster response. For this oscillatory mechanism having a 40 Hz natural frequency and a 0.15 damping ratio, the maximum gains were 147 s^<-1> using (P, I-P) and 62 s^<-1> in (P, PI). A stable response was obtained in (P, I-P) at a gain of 60 s^<-1> but severe oscillations were observed in (P, PI) at the same gain. An experiment using an X-Y table resulted in seven-times higher gain using (P, I-P) over (P, PI), and ±0.2μm contouring error using (P, I-P) as opposed to from +3.0 to -0.5μm using (P, PI) for 10 mm-radius-circle generations at a speed of 100 mm/min.

Point-in-Polygon Tests are basic geometric algorithms in solid modeling. The 4×4 Determinant Method provides a structured framework for all interference problems in the modeling process. The authors have proposed two different algorithms for Point-in-Polygon Tests based on the 4×4 Determinant Method, the PNZ Triangle Method and the Vertex Convexity Method. This paper compares the (1) algorithm simplicity, (2) arithmetic operations per vertex, (3) pre-calculable date, (4) accuracy in floating point arithmetic, (5) applicability in special cases, and (6) applicability in faces with curved edges, of the two algorithms. This shows which algorithm is preferable in each situation, and which algorithm is suitable for implementation in a hardware geometric processor.

本研究の結論は以下のようにまとめられる.<BR>(1) 手書きの線画の位相情報と幾何情報をもとに, 1枚の線画中で左右対称な頂点と曲線の対応付けと, 2線画間で同一な頂点と曲線の対応付けを自動的に行う手法を提案した。<BR>(2) 2次元曲線と3次元曲線との透視変換の関係が明らかである有理Bézier曲線の性質を用いて, 左右対称又は2線画間で対応付けられた2次元曲線を表わす点列から, その点列と投影された曲線との距離が投影面上で最小になる3次元有理Bézier曲線を直接計算する手法を提案した.<BR>(3) (1), (2) の手法を統合し, 容易かっ高速に手書きの線画から3次元自由曲線モデルを生成できるシステムを開発し, 手法の有効性を確認した.<BR>なお, 本研究は東京工業大学工学部知能化機械研究設備を用いて行われた.
