This paper presents a method to measure foot shape from a 3D point cloud as input captured from multiple directions using a smartphone depth camera. Such a 3D point cloud could potentially include noise or omit parts of the foot due to occlusion. To deal with this occlusion problem, we propose to use a dataset of 3D foot shapes collected by a precise 3D shape scanner of foot shapes. According to the dataset of 3D foot shapes, we can generate a deformable model by performing a principal component analysis (PCA) on the dataset. Then we minimize the error of the shape represented by the deformable model and the 3D point cloud acquired by the smartphone camera, to recover a complete 3D shape of the entire foot with high accuracy. We test this method by comparing the 3D shape produced by our proposed method to the 3D shape precisely measured by the 3D scanner. Our proposed method can scan the foot shape with an error of about 1.13mm.

Head alignment equipment for floppy disk drive (FDD) was developed to elevate the quality of FDD. The equipment adjusts the position of upper magnetic head to lower magnetic head relatively with micro meter order accuracy. Prior to the development, the structure of FDD head assembly was improved. To prevent the slip out of upper head in time of screwing, gate shaped plate spring called “hold spring” was added between screws and the fixed part. Size parameters of “hold spring” was decided by combination of finite element method analysis with experiment, and the slip out of the head was decreased to 1/5. The feature of the equipment is a precision movement stage. To avoid the backlash, the stage, is made of 3 axis flexure pivoted levers with displacement reduction mechanism in one body. Owing to these technical settlements, automatic precision alignment of head position was established.

A pocket-size electro-discharge machine of which electrode-feeding is done by using two piezoelectric elements has been developed. One piezo makes inertial force for the Impact Drive Mechanism (IDM). The other piezo adjusts a gap length between an electrode and a workpiece, or forces an electrode to vibrate. To improve the machining performance of the pocket-size electro-discharge machine, forced vibration of an electrode (Vibration method) and the electrode-feeding with fine step of 10 nm (Interpolation method) are examined by using the additional piezo. By the vibration method, the machining time is decreased to 67 % of that without the additional piezo. By the interpolation method, which can make the resolution of the precise positioning mechanism utilizing the IDM finer, the machining time is decreased to 74 %.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the requisite conditions of grinding wheel topography for improving surface finish. In this report, a wide variety of wheel surface topography is examined with the previously developed simulation in which measured distribution of mounting spring constant, dimensional position and shape of abrasive grains are considered. The simulation makes clear that the necessity of wheel surface topography for the fine ground surface profile are to have the extremely small spring constant of grain mounting in a very top surface and its higher average and variation in the inner position from the wheel surface. In addition, to true up the grain edge position and to make a pointed edge of grains flat are necessary. The knowledge obtained from these analysis may be an important guideline in manufacturing, dressing and truing a grinding wheel.

In previous report [J. Japan Soc. Prec. Eng., 59, 3, (1993) 491.] under considering wheel surface topography and ground surface profile, it is theoretically predicted that a spring constant of grain mounting is extremely small in a very top surface of grinding wheel, and that the average of the spring constant and its variation become higher in the inner position from the wheel surface. In this report in order to make clear the displacement behaviors of abrasive grains during grinding process, the spring constant of individual abrasive grain mounting on the vitrified wheel surface are experimentally determined from the load-displacement curve of an abrasive grain measured by micro-Vickers hardness tester. The distribution of spring constant of abrasive grain is first analyzed and then it is made clear that the spring constant mentioned above can be predicted theoretically. And it is also made clear that the spring constant becomes to increase or decrease by steps as the elastic deformation or breakage takes place in the bond material.

The number of lower limb disabled people have lately been increasing because of traffic accidente and aging society. Most of the lower limb disabled people daily live on wheelchairs. Stairs and step are considerable obstacles for the people whose living depends upon wheelchairs. Although stair climbable robots have been developed as robots for extreme tasks, they are of large size, and heavy weight, and too forceful for stairs at home or hospitals. Therefore they are not suitable for welfare purpose at home or hospitals. This study aims at the development of stair clibing wheelchair which offers assistance to the lower limb disabled people. The stair climbing wheelchair has been developed for welfare purpose. The second report described hou to develop stair climbing mechanism of leg and wheel type wheelchair. This report describes how to succeed in automating stair climbing by loading new developed measurement system on the stair climbing wheelchair.

The paper presents a structure model with single degree of freedom which may represent the non-linear characteristics of actual machine tool structure. By using an experimental set-up for orthogonal turning which utilizes the proposed structure model, it is shown that the non-linear variations of vibration parameters m, k, c with applied load can be measured with a special impulsive excitation technigic during the actual turning. Th obtained variations are proved to be quite similar to those obtained for usual turning lathe. Computer simulations of chatter on-set process are then carried out with taking both the variable m, k, c obtained and the non-linearity of cutting process reported in the previous papers into account. The predicted stability thresholds of chatter vibration through the simulation are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental results which include the well-known non-linear phenomena such as high feed and high speed stabilities of chatter and the finite amplitude chatter vibration.
