This paper describes a basic concept of thermoelectric tubes. Construction of thermoelectric tubes has been done by making use of the off-diagonal thermoelectric effect, which is one of the direct energy conversion processes from heat into electricity. Here we also present a fabrication process and the current status of a feasibility study at a garbage incineration plant in Kyoto.

Using the diamagnetic magnetic force of bismuth, the author succeeded in magnetic levitation in a non-controlled and non-rotating stationary state. Furthermore, by applying a rotating mechanism, it became possible to work as a non-controlled magnetic levitation motor. The author examined the placement of the permanent magnet that can float by experiment and numerical calculation and found the optimum combination of permanent magnet and diamagnetic material.

In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for evaluating the performance of an onboard energy harvester. First, the static analysis results using the finite element method and the measurement results using a prototype are compared, and the parameters are supplemented as table data. In addition, the parameters necessary for a mathematical model are identified using a damping vibration. In order to easily evaluate the harvester, we propose a mathematical model that combines the results of using the finite element method with the identified parameters. Finally, a power generation experiment is conducted, and the experimental results are compared with the simulation results to discuss the validity of the proposed mathematical model.

Ferrofluid can be defined as one of typical “nano-materials” as the basic composition is a blend of real “nm” controlled substances. The history of ferrofluid is more than half century and there are some specific fields where ferrofluid has dedicated to support the key commercial technologies as like HDD, speaker, semi-conductor, smartphone, recycle unit and biomedical manners. Recently we can see more candidate applications adapting ferrofluid to develop new business area. The latest trend of some typical applications is introduced in this paper.

Itch is an unpleasant sensation associated with various disease, and can trigger scratching. Management of itch and scratching is important for treatment of disease. Therefore, quantitative and objective evaluation of itch and scratching is demanded. This work aims to develop the sensor system for evaluating the scratching motion. For the purpose, we focus on scratch sounds induced by scratching motion and, propose a nail mounted sensor system . In the sensor system a small microphone is attached on a nail for measuring scratching sounds. First, for investigating the relationship between the scratch sounds and the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion, the artificial skin model made of polyurethane was used as a scratched object. The measurement system that can measure force and a motion of fingertip during scratching was constructed. Using the measurement system, various kinds of human scratch motions and sounds were measured. By signal processing of the scratch sounds, the several sound features were calculated and characteristics of scratch motions were extracted. Then, correlation coefficients between sound features and scratch motion properties were calculated. From the results, two pairs of the parameters were found as the most adequate parameter pair to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. And using these parameters, “scratch evaluation map” was proposed as a method to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. From the results, it was found that the developed sensor system has possibility to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion by the scratch sounds.

Motions estimation utilizing EEG can develop devices supporting the elderly and disabilities. This paper investigated a possibility of limb motion estimation using Bereitschafts Potential (BP). BP means voltage variation of EEG just before motions. To estimate, neural network was introduced. Three types of processed signal were used as the input. The types of signal processing were FFT, increment and normalization. The best signal processing of them was normalization, and the accuracy rate was 89.0%.

In general, shellfish contain a number of bacteria and viruses that can cause food poisoning. However, because raw food is so delicious, some people take the risk of eating it, and a certain number of cases occur every year. The bacteria that contaminates shellfish are known to concentrate in an organ called the digestive gland. If the organs can be sterilized with pinpoint heat, it will be possible to eat them safely while still enjoying the taste of eating raw food. Therefore, we investigated a method of heat sterilization of the digestive gland with pinpoint accuracy using a CO2 laser. As a result, 99.5% of the bacteria were sterilized.

Mouthguard type sensors have been developed to monitor the healthcare-related information. In order to realize a battery-less sensor system, we propose a sheet form generator driven by occlusal force to supply electrical power for mouthguard type sensors. The proposed generator is made by stacking an electret and a dielectric elastomer. It converts mechanical energy applied by occlusion to electrical energy by electrostatic induction. In this study, the generator sheet was designed and its ability of power generation was evaluated experimentally. The prototype generator achieved 6.2 μW under the force equivalent to occlusal force. The generated power was 190 times as large as that of piezoelectric type. Although the achieved power is not sufficient to provide energy for mouthguard sensors so far, the output power will be improved by optimizing shape of dielectric elastomer and surface voltage of electret. The experimental results sufficiently support the possibility to realize the battery-less sensor system.

Lithium ion batteries have higher energy density. Recently, lithium ion batteries are beginning to be utilized in industrial applications. As for the lithium ion batteries in industrial applications, many different performances are required as well as energy density. It is important to develop according to the own requirement for their application. Energy density of Lithium ion batteries using LTO anode is smaller than that of conventional ones. But the batteries with LTO anode have unique features. In this reports, the features and application of lithium ion batteries using LTO anode is explained.

<p> Linear DC motors often fit the drive field of which you request single stroke fast response below the 100 mm in particular. It is necessary to make the servo gain increased to drive LDM by fast-response. But displacement of LDM is easy to oscillate in increased gain. Amount of displacement is increase by pitching of LDM. It is desirable to install the displacement detection sensor at a position not affected by pitching behavior. This paper introduces the displacement detection position not affected by pitching.</p>

Unlike low-cost massive energy sources for grid systems, energy harvesting is a high-added-value power generation technologies, in which small power can be extracted from energy sources in the environment. Energy harvesting technologies will make an important contribution to autonomous devices including wireless sensor nodes by providing battery-less long-lived power source. Recently, significant efforts have been paid in the country and abroad toward various applications such as building energy management system.

The purpose of this report is to introduce and discuss about the design parameters for a segment of a tactile sensor which will be used to read one dot of a braille alphabet. A single segment of a tactile sensor, consisting of a piezoelectric (PVDF) film sandwiched between two elastic materials, is designed. The design parameters, regarding the geometry and Young's modulus of the sensor are introduced. Simulations are used to investigate the influence of the design parameter on the sensor output, and to show the design criterion in order to obtain enough large sensor output. The results show that 1) for obtaining enough large sensor output, the layer, which is closer to the contact point with the dot of a Braille alphabet, should be "thinner" than and have a "similar hardness" to the other layer, 2) the output of sensor is mostly dependent on the bending effect near the PVDF layer and the Clamped structure can encourage more bending.

There is a method to excite by a square wave as a simple method of the brushless DC motor drive. The simplest method is 120 ° excitation method used the Hall sensor output. But the method has part inferior in terms of efficiency. However, the efficiency can be clearly improved by extending excitation angle or advancing current phase angle, in spite of square wave excitation. In this paper, we measure the motor efficiency using these methods, and inspect their validness experimentally.

Typically, the difference between electromagnetic induction and magnetic resonant coupling is ambiguous. However, these two technologies are seamlessly connected. In this paper, the superiority of magnetic resonant coupling over electromagnetic induction, as well as the magnetic flux distinctive features, are demonstrated and discussed by comparing four circuit topologies. It is shown that only the S-S topology can achieve both high power and maximum efficiency and that the magnetic flux possesses unique characteristics.

Transformers used in switching power supplies can be reduced in size by increasing the frequency. However, transformer loss increases with higher frequencies, which hinders higher efficiency. Therefore, transformer using interleaved winding is being considered. The authors consider the reduction of copper loss in the planar transformer for LLC resonant converter using interleaved winding. It was confirmed by analysis that the AC resistance was reduced by 55.4 % from 217.6 mΩ to 97.1 mΩ by applying interleaved winding. In addition, an interleaved planar transformer with a substrate pattern as a winding was manufactured, and through experiments, the efficiency of an LLC resonant converter using a transformer with an interleaved winding was measured, and the copper loss reduction effect of the transformer was demonstrated.

Authors investigated whether the absolute sound pressure in the ultrasonic cleaning machine can be measured by fiber optic probe hydrophone (FOPH) under cavitation. Since the intensity on the cavitation bubble collapse is high in the frequency range of about 30 to 100 kHz, the sound pressure measurement using FOPH was applied to ultrasonic cleaning machine with the use of a submerged ultrasonic transducer with frequency of 35.5 kHz. In the case of cavitation bubble collapse occurs frequently, it is confirmed that fundamental and harmonic components can be measured by FOPH. And also, the sound pressure distribution was compared to the analysis result using finite element method.
